FTC: Sound Team

I will begin my From the Closet today by saying that you should check out the wikipedia page about Austin band Sound Team if you don’t know their history.  It’s a long story about a band that showed heaps of promise before breaking up amongst turmoil in the band and dissatisfaction with their label.  Like I said, check our their wikipedia page and read up.  Today I am bringing you a song from Sound Team’s one and only major label LP Movie Monster.  Despite what some people may say, I actually enjoyed that record when it came out and still spin it every once and awhile.  This jam “Born to Please” serves as an introduction to that LP right after a short “intro” type track.  I highly recommend picking that one up at your local record store.  Of course the former members of Sound Team are still making waves in the local scene so it’s not like all is lost for you fans of the sound.  Bill Baird and Sam Sanford currently jams in Sunset, Matt Oliver and Jordan Johns currently run TV Torso, and Will Patterson has struck out on his own as Sleep Good.  Maybe one day we can get them all back together again for a lil reunion?

Austin A2W: Sleep Good

Austin band Sleep Good is the brain child of local resident Will Paterson who has spent time in big name bands like Sunset and Sound Team.  Will could probably be most closely compared to Alan Palomo since both are young lads in their very early 20s and both have already put out massive amounts of creative material in a very short amount of time.  For the longest time, Will worked on his Sleep Good project completely solo and only used the name as a creative moniker.  A year or so ago though the solo moniker became a full blown band with four other members who have been doing some light touring as of late around Austin.  You’ll be hard pressed to find recorded material from Sleep Good that you can actually download or purchase other than their Autobus Records LP Skyclimber.  I’ve gotten my hands on that album and have really enjoyed the material as one of the most creative pieces of work to come out locally this year.  You’ll also be hard pressed to put a label on this project from Patterson.  At times you’ll hear British twee mixed in with some of the noisier pop elements of Pet Sounds. Then after you think you’ve got it all figured out, you’ll hear a song like “Shoney’s” which sounds like a new take on “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” as performed by Queen.  Needless to say, I’m liking what I hear.  You can download the new record digitally via Band Camp or on the Autobus Records website.

Austin A2W: TV Torso

tv_torso_photographer_tim_murrayTV Torso may not be a household name at this point, but I’m sure some of you are familiar with the Austin band Sound Team that disbanded forever in 2007.  We mention them because two founding members of TV Torso, Matt Oiver (guitar/vocals) and Jordan Johns (drums) were both members of that now defunct Austin band.  After adding bassist Austin Jones, the band has started fresh and are planning to take the Austin world by storm.  TV Torso call their sound minimal rock music and try to keep their sound as simplistic as possible.  Whatever you want to call it, we dig it.  The band also recently finished recording two 7″ singles which will hit stores August 18th and will come with the vinyl, free downloads, a bonus download and a blank CD-R.  You can catch these guys live on Thursday at Mohawk for free around midnight or on August 20th again at Mohawk along with fellow A2W band The AuthorsCheck out the TV Torso band camp site for some more free tuneage or enjoy this one “Days of Being Wild”.
