Soft Science Share Kerosene Video

When I first started listening to the new stuff from Soft Science‘s new LP, I really thought they sounded like our ATH gaze-pop act Blushing. Similarly, the group draws from a heavy wash of feedback and pummeling drum work, but then you’ve got to sort of peel that away to find the sweet candy center your ears and heart adore. That being said, Soft Science employ more of an indiepop vocal; it’s got that soft crispness that made us fall in love with acts like Heavenly or Luxembourg Signal. They’ve also got some great guitar work in the middle that really opens the song up a bit, almost nodding to more of a 90s alternative feel. So, while they’ve definitely got similarities to things I adore, I appreciate they’ve really stepped out to make the sound entirely their own. They’ll be releasing Lines via Shelflife/Fastcut/Spinout Nuggets on September 8th.

The Hannah Barberas Prepare Fantastic Tales of the Sea; Share Latest Single

It is the first day of the month, which means we’re in line for a bunch of new records in the glorious month of May, like Fantastic Tales of the Sea, the latest from The Hannah Barberas. Their latest single takes their brand of jangling pop styles and elevates it to this almost theatric nature, making it leap right through your speakers. As the band trade vocal lines back and forth, I couldn’t help but feel as if I was listening to a well-recorded musical; there’s this live spirit in the way the voices get recorded that just jumped out at me, begging me to stand in the aisle and boogie down. Get your pop fix right here, right now; the new LP comes out on May 26th via Spinout Nuggets/Doo Lang/Subjangle, Gazer Tapes.

Treasures of Mexico Share New Tunes

All you old Dentists fans still kicking about will surely already have this new Treasures of Mexico tunes on your radar, but in case not, well, here we are! Over the weekend, the band dropped Always the Shadows 7″, which came out via Spinout Nuggets, and had this charming A side. Personally, I love the way there’s this almost progressive jangle, like the band are harnessing bits of psychedelia while still trying to hold onto their power pop tendencies; it also doesn’t hurt that you get backing vocals that build in the melodic nature of the chorus. Honestly, this is just a pure classic pop sound, and its super hard to envision anyone having anything negative to say. Slight edge, good melody, just weird enough to be cool. There you have it.

The Shop Window Shares Out of Reach

Just over here keeping it real on the indiepop front today, so why not keep that boat a-rocking by sharing the latest tune from The Shop Window. While the vocals have that melodic softness you’d associate with the genre, the guitar work has this heavier feel, almost pulling you towards the crossover of dream pop. That combination crafts something that hurls you through this nostalgic warp where your favorite hits had you bouncing and dancing and singing and smiling; the chorus definitely feels fresh whilst looking back on club hits of the late 80s. You’ll find this tune featured on the band’s latest 7″ for Spinout Nuggets, dropping on January 29th.

The Luxembourg Signal Share The Morning After

Perhaps I’m too easy to please, but there are definitely some easy indiepop tricks that sucker me into a good tune, not that The Luxembourg Signal need employ such tactics to win me over. Nonetheless, one such little nuance pulled me deep into this tune, and it happens right at the 58 second mark. Up until then, we’ve got a casually meandering guitar line over some structured rhythm with softened vocals. But, and its slight, another guitar crashes the party, allowing the drums to join in with a heavier hand, pushing the song into the dream pop perfection. It’s like indiepop slight of hand, and that’s not the only ace up the sleeve in this track…you’ll have to listen with a close early to catch some other nuanced moments, so go on and peel this pop banana back. The Long Now will be out on October 23 via Shelflife and Spinout Nuggets.

The Luxembourg Signal Announce The Long Now

If you get two great LPs under your belt, you may as well shoot for that third, right? That seems to be the feeling I’m getting with today’s announcement that The Luxembourg Signal will return this Fall with The Long Now. Our first listen has the band dropping in immediately, pounding rhythm pushes the pace as those dreamy crystalline guitars chug; there’s a moment where another guitar shoots in, exploding like some sort of pop music firework in the foreground. You wait almost a minute before the vocals come in, but the wait is worth it, providing a moment to let the song breathe. It all erupts once again, like an indiepop volcano spewing forth sublime pop sensibility through your speakers, covering you in its charm. This is the perfect single! The Long Now will drop on October 23rd via Shelflife/Spinout Nuggets.
