Last Week’s Jams (4.7 – 4.11)

We covered a shit load of great music last week, and as is likely to happen, we’re a bit all over the place, sonically. There’s definitely a fair share of punk-ish stuff like The Golden Toad and Second Act, but some classic pop acts of days of old have returned. I mean, can we give a shout out for Comet Gain and Brideshead both announcing brand new albums? I premiered a brand new track from Gentle Leader XIV, and RayRay continued with our undying love of new Night Beats. Plus, you can’t go wrong with new Austin stuff from French Film (not streaming) and Mobley, so bopping there as well. Just find a favorite, as you’re bound to find something joyful.

Last Week’s Jams (2.24 – 2.28)

Pretty solid wee of new music last week, and we got to as much as our time allowed. We even managed to start getting some of our SXSW coverage together, as the festival is somehow just over the horizon; RayRay got an interview up with Population II you should check out. We even got back on some album stream coverage, making sure to have the homies in Constant Follower and Daily Worker up there. We continue as the one-site hype machine for Sharp Pins Radio DDR reissue, but there some of my favorite acts also returned with their own new jams to grab us, like Dumb Things and Jetstream Pony. I even jumped on the Sports Team train with their latest single. Get into it below.

Sports Team Share Maybe When We’re 30

There’s a lot of wind blowing overseas with Sports Team on the wings, and I’ll admit, I’m always interested in what the press adore over there, and how it resonates in the States. With this lot, it’s fully hit or miss, but this new single is definitely a hit, and perhaps it’s because it does sound wholly British in its presentation, though the latter half of this tune does move into that territory of every day indie rock. The entirety of the tune operates on this sort of steadied bounce, kicking through a matched vocal performance that seems to walk you through their contemplations on our investment in social media. Kind of feels lie a [better] British answer to Arcade Fire, with commentary and pop and art bred as one. Boys These Days will be out on May23rd via Distiller/Antenna Records.

Marlon Williams Announces My Boy

I very vividly remember running with my iPod around 2018; I was listening to a bunch of stuff on random that I had downloaded from various PR folks. Marlon Williams “Beautiful Dress” came on, and I immediately stopped to see what on Earth was making that voice. I’ve been a fan ever since, so I’m looking forward to Marlon’s new LP, My Boy. The release promises a more playful Williams this go round, which you can hear in the style of this track, so it’ll be nice to hear him attached to something a bit different, though equally as moving…as you can see. Just check out the 2:25 mark to see where my brain is at! My Boy is out on September 9th via Dead Oceans.

More New Music from Merk

Since stumbling upon Merk earlier this year, I’ve just been super into what he’s putting together for the forthcoming Infinite Youth LP. On a certain level, this new single feels the most accessible; it’s definitely brandishing a really polished pop appeal, something that gets your feet shuffling. But, while you can tap your toes, there’s this subtlety that I’ve really grown to enjoy, a little bit of patience and refined pop spins. Weirdly, I can see myself sweeping the house, then doing a nice little smooth spin with broom in hand, pulling it in as my stand-in microphone to shred the chorus for my wife and daughter. I’m your no-shame pop fan; grab the LP on April 9th via Humblebrag Records.

The Beths Share I’m Not Getting Excited

It’s going to be really tough to follow up Future Me Hates Me, but the Beths are sure aiming to top their debut with what we’re hearing from Jump Rope Gazers, their follow-up. Their latest single comes with a rad stop-motion video organized by Sports Team, and adds a personal touch to the album. Singer Elizabeth Stokes says the song alludes to her own fears that even though things get exciting, she’s always waiting around for the proverbial ball to drop and things to get shitty. Oddly enough, that feelings seems rather pertinent as we all face down whatever the hell comes next. All I can say is that at least we’ll have another great pop rock tune to sing-along to when this new LP drops via Carpark on July 10th.
