Last Week’s Jams (9.23 – 9.27)

We’re drawing towards the end of the year, and while that means arbitrary musical lists of things, what it also means is that we’ve got a few more records hanging out to enjoy before the year is up. Personally, there were some great new songs from trauma ray, EggS and the Wickies, which indicated that these acts have a lot of promise to deliver. Best Bets dropped their latest LP, which was on our radar, not to mention the new release from Being Dead and Feeling Figures. Loved the introduction to Coldwave, and it never hurts to wrap up the end of the week with new music from Constant Follower!

Jamming This Spun Out Single

When Chicago band Spun Out first got going, they were lumped in with a lot of psych pop acts, and that’s all well and good, but their latest single is indicative of the band’s drive towards pop. At times, the brooding bounce offers up a bit of post-punk, but once the vocals come in the song takes on this yearning struggle, seeking solace on the other side of the horizon. That rhythm section alone, pounding away, makes this song’s vibrancy sing allowed furiously, with textured synths matching up with the vocals to brandish a forward-thinking brand of pop. We’ll see if we’re right when the band drops Dream Noise via Shuga Records on October 25th.

We Love Obits…and Their New Single

ObitsI’ve actually grown to appreciate  Obits as their own entity; I used to love them based solely on their earlier bands.  On this new song, the second single from their upcoming album, they’re, surprisingly, not going on full blast.  There’s still that rawness, which admittedly can be attributed to the vocals, but the warmth of the guitar towards the end of the track really finds the band going in different directions.  Bed Bugs is the title of the new album, and it’s being released by Sub Pop on September 10th; are you ready to rock?
