Last Week’s Jams (9.3 – 9.6)

Just because it was a short week doesn’t mean we couldn’t cover a whole lot of brand new music, especially since there were some unexpected returns that we didn’t know were coming, like new jams from The Green Child and The Innocence Mission. More recent favorites dropped some solid tracks for us, so check in with the latest from Best Bets, Naked Roommate and Mo Dotti. But, don’t just think it was all bangers, with the softer side coming through via Adrian Marner and Tom Emlyn. And, be sure to check in with that new Forceghost, who I’d like to apologize to for misspelling the name of their Recycled Hearts release; sorry my friends! Just press play and enjoy!

Squirrel Shares The Summer Dies Tonight

If you’ve been hanging out on this site over the last few years, you’ve surely taken note of my favorite, Squirrel. The New Jersey mystery man is like a swirling lollipop mixture of Wayne Coyne, Daniel Johnston and Jason Lytle…it’s delicious and strange, yet wholly circling pop constructs. He just dropped a little collection of B-Sides, tunes that didn’t make the final cut of Supersonic Summertime…and I’m loving this new one. Walking you into the tune on the back of a thumping bass groove and those high-pitched vocals, you’ll find that the tune opens up to this summery sun shining through your speakers. If you’re in search of outsider pop, you definitely need to dive into this song, and check out the other B-sides on Dream Islands.

Last Week’s Jams (7.15 – 7.19)

For some reason, this past week felt a little slow in terms of new music coming our way, and while I say that, we still cranked out over 20 tracks for you to peruse below. I was super excited for the new track from Low’s Alan Sparhawk, the first music we’ve heard from him since the passing of his Mimi; it was a beautiful piece that shows Alan off on a grand adventure. The Reds, Pinks and Purples snuck in some special new singles, so we’re grateful Glenn got those out into the world. I was stoked on new stuff from Austin’s Marry Cherry, not to mention a new Wut tune that came our way. Kicked off this playlist with my favorite tune, Teenage Tom Petties bringing in the hooks with “Night Nurse.” So, press play and see what you missed out on last week!

Squirrel Shares Beach House Single

Squirrel continues to operate as an outsider in the indie realm, mostly concerned with writing great pop tunes from the left of the dial. Every time I hear a new track, there’s some new element being incorporated, stretching the limitations of bedroom pop projects. For instance, this tune operates as a sunny blend of surf pop, sort of like a sandy beach oriented version of early Animal Collective; it’s playful and yet not quite perfect, doubling down on the elements that captivate. This tune even brings in some violin work, building in more texture that allows the track to brim with charm. New album, Supersonic Summertime, drops on July 30th.

Last Week’s Jams (3.18 – 3.22)

After a week where I felt we left our visitors down, due to some musical gather in Austin, we came back with a vengeance this week. We repped some hometown heroes, announcing that Eastside Suicides would be reissuing their debut, along with a new tune from our friends in Blushing. Perennial site favorites Rural France and Red, Pinks and Purples made their usual appearance with fresh tunes for you. I loved new stuff from Winged Wheel and Yea-Ming and the Rumours. Honestly, I don’t think there’s a bad song in this playlist, which duh, we get to hand-pick what we cover. Press play and enjoy.

Squirrel Shares Crayons EP

I’ve been checking in on New Jersey’s Squirrel since the project landed on my radar last year, and I’m definitely enjoying the Crayons EP that just dropped this week. The opener has a whole lot of spirit, sort of bouncing and jangling along, which according to the accompanying PR was written during a great moment of hope. “Teas” also teases some of the ways Squirrel takes risks within the confines of indie sounds, and that willingness is part of the songwriting charms I implore you sample here. Kind of feels like the songs are being written by the lost son of Wayne Coyne, so give it a go.

Squirrel Shares Another Single

While it might not have the cache of the cool kids, I really am appreciating the quiet work of Squirrel. From what I know, Squirrel is holed up in his tree, crafting these lo-fi pop tunes that wouldn’t be too far away from the heart of Daniel Johnston. That might be easiest to feel in the vocals, but there’s also some quick decisions in the songwriting that feel like the sort of left turns Daniel would make in his work; there’s just a lot of personality that shines through in the craft that makes me all the more appreciative of Squirrel’s songwriting. Keep an eye out for Everything Sucks Forever when it drops on October 30th.

Squirrel Share Stick Figures

Squirrel is a home-recording artist based in New Jersey, but listening through the craft on his fresh single, it seems like he might be best suited for the quaint town of Athens, Georgia. You’ll hear a certain devotion to pop sounds in the building of the tune, with elements of creative warble and fuzz abundant in the space behind the vocals. Something about it reminds me of early Elf Power, which is one of my most cherished vibes. But, there’s also a bit of Islands/Unicorns in the poppier side, which I think really made the tune magical in my ears. If you’re digging, Squirrel will release Everything Sucks Forever on October 30th.

Squirrel Share I Love You Single

There’s a special spot in my heart for oddball pop rock, from the early Elephant 6 to bands like Tripping Daisy or even early Flaming Lips, so this is immediately where my mind traveled when I began to listen to the new single from Squirrel. Opening with a huge punch, the song jumps into this bright blast of melody, operating a fuzzy little riff while the vocals course up and down holding tight to that juicy hook. The chorus offers a big blast of rolling drums and fury, albeit, done with a little lo-fi flare. If you’re digging on it, check out Squirrel, and the forthcoming Human Teeth Parade EP dropping on March 14th.
