Frog Shares Christmas Tune

When Frog released their 2023 Grog LP, folks lined up to praise the band and their work, deservedly so. Now, they’ve teased a new album, but offered up a hold-over holiday tune to keep your ears warm during this Winter season. This tune has a take that’s not too similar to the traditional “Night Before Christmas” story, though told from the oddball perspective, which only makes sense hearing Frog as an outsider outfit. They continue to layer the song with twinkling piano notes, building it up with a snapping drum beat and these vocals that seem almost instrumental in their presence. A nice way to look forward to the New Year.

Hattara Share Uimaan Single

If you dabble in visiting this site, hopefully you’re aware of our appreciation for the world of Finnish pop music, mostly due to our long-running friendship with Soliti Records. Today, however, we bring you an act not associated with the label, but certainly a swoon worthy piece of pop from Hattara. Akin to many a dreampop act in the States, the song kind of dangled these little pieces of sparkling guitar glass in the background while the drums offer up a steady groove to kind of give the track just enough pace to illustrate movement. Vocals come in just as you’d want in this setting, offering up that rustling wind effect, allowing the song to sort of billow and move as each note blows through your speakers. Really appreciated the noisy bite at the end.

The Male Gays Release Be Kind Single

Today the world gets to meet the Male Gays, though in all likelihood, you’ve heard from the two members before. The new cross-continental project is the work of Guy Blackman (owner of Chapter Music) and Bart McDonagh (of Amour Foo/Domino Records). Their very first single is this enchanting number below, almost like a lounge version of Magnetic Fields; there are deep tones on the vocal end, and it feels as if it’s been crafted on your older sisters keyboard; I loved the sort of heart-on-the sleeve sincerity too. The messaging on this go round is all about kindness, which seems like a simple concept, though it’s one that’s becoming increasingly less common. On their three song EP, they’ll offer up other thematic references “rejecting queer cynicism, the need to rid the world of white boys wielding guitars (which includes themselves, naturally) and the difference between being outpunk and being an actual punk.” The single will drop on August 2nd via both Chapter and Amour Foo.

King Creosote Announces I Des

Admittedly, my love for orchestral pop has perhaps waned a bit in the last few years, as I dove in pretty heavy in the late 00s. That said, I’ve always had a really soft spot for King Creosote, and with the announcement of I Des, it gave me another chance to really dive back into his songwriting. There’s a lot of great elements in this first single too, from the sort of running guitar/synth line as the backbone, mingling with the string arrangements that sweep the song along in step with all the vocal pieces. Speaking of those vocal pieces, Kenny Anderson’s voice sounds rather distinctive in this version, so its nice to hear it offset a bit with these soft little female counter harmonies. The new LP drops via Domino on November 3rd.

Start Your Day with The Salient Braves

For awhile, news of a new LP from the Salient Braves has been floating about. Now we’ve got a release date and a new song for you to start planning your purchase. This song is built on the back of a piano, incorporating the pleasant croon of the vocals to further the band’s brilliant use of melody. As the song moves on, touches of strings are added to the layers, building towards a more pronounced ending for the track. Their new records is titled Delusions of Grandeur, and it’s being released by Broken Down Records on September 22nd.
