New Slow Jam from Crystal Castles

It’s almost the end of the week, and it seems like things have been slowed down quite a bit in the music world.  But, there’s still been a few great hits floating about, especially this new jam from Crystal Castles.  This new single is definitely more of a slow burn, but I think it encapsulates the growth of the band of the last few years, no longer merely intent upon banging out in-your-face electronic jams.  You can find this tune on III, the group’s upcoming album, which is due out on November 13th in the US.  After their set at ACL, there’s not much this band can do wrong at the moment.

New Hit from September Girls

I love writing about the bands on Matinee Recordings; it makes it so easy as they almost never miss.  The newest installation to their storied stable is Dublin’s September Girls, a five piece group specializing in bringing a blend of atmospheric post rock and girl group harmonies.  It’s pretty much a perfect blend of all your favorite things, uniting noisier pop with your tendency to wax nostalgic about a more pure rock n’ roll sound.  You better get your hands on it now, as the history of the band shows that there music is being gobbled up quickly all over the globe, so chances are this 7″ EP won’t be around for too long.

New Soulful Jam from Shannon and the Clams

One of the great things about hitting up the record store on new release day is stumbling upon tunes you weren’t expecting, like this new tune from Shannon and the Clams.  The band’s been sort of quiet, but that’s probably because Shannon’s been touring with Hunx.  However, the group is back with a few new 7″ records, and this one comes out from Volar Records (I picked it up last night). Shannon has a voice that sounds like the heir apparent to Janis Joplin, and I mean that in a flattering sense, as very few people can combine the raspy and the soulful and pull it off; this young lady can definitely do it.

Rad Tune from Cave Cat

Man, I really love this track from Cave Cat.  I wish I knew more about this group of Swedes, other than they just released this great 7″ on Luxury and Dufflecoat Records.  It’s definitely a bit of a wayward jangle, but the atmospheric bent of the vocals and ringing guitars puts this band on par with groups like The Mary Onettes…another personal favorite.  I particularly love how the guitar solo knifes its way through on the latter half of the tune. Cool Old Jam from The Barbaras

Well, this is an old song, but it’s probably going to be brand new to those of us outside of Memphis who hadn’t heard of The Barbaras.  Legend has it that Jay Reatard recorded the band, which featured Steven Pope (of his then touring band), but in anger told the band he scrapped the recordings.  After his unfortunate demise, these tunes resurfaced on some of Jay’s old recording equipment, and the great people at Goner Records are going to be releasing the collection, The Barbaras 2006-2008, on October 30th.  This track’s definitely made its way onto my daily playlist, and it has a mellower tone than some of the other tracks, just showcasing the songwriting of the group during their prime. Take a listen.

Sorry I Missed This: New (ish) Album from Dappled Cities

Man, what’s wrong with me?  I’ve been so swamped with US releases that I totally forgot to check in on Dappled Cities.  Long ago when we were a fledgling site with big ambitions, the group played our very first SXSW Show, and we were grateful to have them.  Apparently the group’s been working hard, just getting home after touring in support of  their latest LP, Lake Air.  I’m not sure how that slid under my radar, but better late than never, right?  It’s an energetic pop tune, sincere and bright, just as I remembered the band years ago.  Excuse me, I’m going to go immerse myself in this album. Do the same, won’t you?

New Single (Split 7″) from The Daredevil Christopher Wright

Earlier this year The Daredevil Christopher Wright release The Nature of Things; I thought it was a solid effort that slowly made its way into my playing rotation, though the band received minimal press.  They return now with a split 7″ with their friends Cuddle Magic, and I hope that this is the release that brings them more interest; the song definitely warrants my approval. You’ll find a quiet track, moving along slowly, but there’s this underlying melody that is wholly captivating.  If you’re looking for something that will allow you to get lost within your soul, then play this tracks as many times as you can. I’ll see you on the other side.

New Art Pop from Each Other

When this first came onto my player, I really thought it was going to be some sort of jangling psych rock hit, which I was completely okay with at the time.  But, that being said, I’m much more impressed with the direction this new tune from Each Other takes, meandering into its own realm of art pop, even floating off into a creative bit of atmospheric noodling towards the end of the track.  It’s a good thing that the band’s Heavily Spaced EP is soon to come so we can see what else these Canadians have up their sleeve.

New Music from Ducktails

Last year I really got stuck listening to Ducktails III; it made my year end list, in fact!  Now we return with news of a new record, this time on Domino Records.  The first single sees Matt Mondanile and Ducktails again crafting his own sonic genre, with mellow guitar lines turning around minimal percussive elements.  He seems subdued here, which could make for a great listen when Days comes out on January 29th, wrapping up the winter months with his beautifully spun pop tunes.  I can’t find any faults with the music he’s creating when it sounds as good as this tune.

New Music from The Babies

The following track is not like anything I’ve heard from The Babies as of late, but to be honest, I think that’s one of the reasons I’ve always enjoyed listening to the group: their sound is fairly unidentifiable.  They’ve got tunes that come off as garage-rock, but they’ll mix it up with some slow-paced ballad, keeping you on your toes throughout your listening experience.  This new tune begins with a bit of a wayward stomp, filled with a melodic hook that I can’t escape; of course, it also features a closing guitar ambling to wrap up the track.  Who knows what we’ll get when their latest album Our House on the Hill comes out November 13th (Woodsist), but I bet it’s going to be good.
