The Rishis Announce New Self-Titled LP

A few years back, The Rishis dropped an excellent album, August Moon. And, they’e just announced that there’s a new self-titled LP coming our way. One of the singles that came out with the announcement transported me back to the early days of Elliott Smith’s work, albeit done with a full band. It’s got a feathered vocal atop a steady bounce from the piano line, ultimately leaving you with an intoxicating pop jam that has me salivating for what’s coming next. Seriously, such a rad tune that it’s going to be playing all day long. The Rishis will release their self-titled LP on February 21st via Cloud Recordings.

Demora Release Torpor Single

For all the noise meets shoegaze bands out there, the world can get a bit muddle behind that sound, and let’s be honest, some groups just do it better than others. Today, I bring you Demora, who feel like they’re almost embarking on a voyage through the perfect storm of it all; they’re definitely bringing noise, though they’ve got these cascading notes contrasting heavier tones, then drop it all down into a huge crash…it feels like if Hum decided they wanted to get into the dream pop realm. The vocals have this perfect melodic focus, again, recalling someone like Chino Moreno working an pop affliction through a heavy rock lens. This is the title track on their Torpor EP, out on February 28th via Cherub Dream Records.

Field Hospitals Share Sister Jane

I was instantly drawn to this Field Hospitals single; the crispness of the guitars, semi-jangling in the forefront was enough to capture my attention. They carry that spirit forward, building on the matching stomp and strum, letting the wistful push of the vocals drive the song’s energy forward. Something about the band’s work feels almost like 90s alternative, which would make sense, since they draw from the spirit of REM and like-minded acts to build their sound. They’ve got a new Ethel Green EP slated for release on February 7th, so be sure to check it out, as I promise you won’t regret. It’s like an American version of RVG…and you know I love that.

 

LP Gavin Channels Pavement on New Single

If you missed the olden days of slacker rock, might we remind you that you have new heroes ahead in LP Gavin. They definitely pull out some tricks from the Pavement back catalog, though it gets reimagined in a new presentation. You’ll find the reclining verses coiled around these emphatic punches of grungy pop rock; I like to think there’s just a bit more pulling on the reins, which allows the hook to really sail through the speakers. Hard to find that perfect balance between bursts and bops, but they’re pulling it off successfully below. Trials, Tribulations, Deliberations, Pratfalls, Reprieves, Etc is out February 28th via Repeating Cloud and Safe Suburban Home.

Shrapnel Share One More Single

You only have to wait a handful of days before Shrapnel unveil their latest LP, and we’ve been helping cover as much as we can on the lead up, and now there’s one final peek under the covers. This number has this sharpness that pushes some bravado, though their melodic vocal mixture belies their natural pop sensibility. They begin to push that more and more as the track progresses, which ultimately takes the tune into the psychedelic territory; it then becomes apparent you’ve been on this mystical journey all along, only you had no idea where they were taking you until they come back in with a punchy drop of riffs that ride off onto the horizon. Sedan Center is out Friday via Tenth Court.

Seasonal Falls Share The End

I spent a ton of time covering Seasonal Falls throughout 2024, and it looks like Roman Gabriel hasn’t slowed down one bit, turning out another new release, with the first single already leaving me intoxicated. Through the first minute or so of the song, you’re greeted with a gentleness that welcomes you into the folds. A slight little twist and the song evolves into slightly bolder moment, with the vocals pushing themselves over the top, leaving listener and artists in a moment of bliss. You can expect more of these moments on the Improvised Sinking EP, which drops in March!

Leatherette Prep New EP

If we’re being honest, we don’t get too much from the Italian music scene, and I’m not quite sure why, but when I got this Leatherette jam, I was all over it. It’s that sort of skronking post-punk that’s been all the age, but they’re doing it in a slightly different fashion. For starters, the tracks is wrapped up in a dreamy guitar, immediately softening the edge (which pays off in the chorus). Also, they seem to hint at some nostalgic moves, not only with the horn blasts, but also with some of the underlying grooves of the rhythm section. Personally, I love that there’s some emphatic vocal bursts, but because of the guitar, they still cling to melody, so not ac cliche and abrasive. New EP will hit on February 14th.

Mauger Shares There Goes Your Man

Belgian artist Mauger has popped up on this site on several occasions, and the latest track feels like a great start to the week, from my ears anyways. When it begins, there’s a gentle softness, almost a kind of coy little croon that slinks into fragile indie pop. Then, you get a little plot twist with a nice little nod from the electronic belly, setting up the chorus with this perfect little twist that delivers that emotional connection you’ve been seeking. He’s still wrapping up the pieces to his new record, so keep an eye out for more in the very near future.

Last Week’s Jams (1.20 – 1.24)

Seems like this year so far, it’s been one step forward and two steps back, but feel like I got locked in during this short week, allowing me to get a solid bit of rock n’ roll out from underneath my inbox. We had a lot of Austin stuff to go through…MIEN, Gus Baldwin, Edith Frost, Skloss, Midcard…and maybe we consider Cross Record still! Lots of other new things popped up including the latest from Accessory and the Golden Dregs, which were to of my favorite tracks we go under. Several of the jams are some slow-burns, so take your time and enjoy the rock around you.

Magana Releases Bad News EP

Jeni Magana‘s Teeth caught us off-guard, displaying the craftsmanship of a talented artist whose often spent her time buoying other people’s works. The Bad News EP fits perfectly into that narrative, with the opening track a brilliant pop track that lets the vocals drift, and while they embrace the dreamiest realms of her voice, there’s also this little textural bounce that comes from a some woodwind instrument; I loved the build in that opening number, and it sets up the concept as this album serving as that middle spot between the coldness at the end of Winter and the blossoming of early Spring buds.
