Accessory Shares New Singles

As avowed Dehd fans, we’d be remiss if we didn’t at least shine a light on Jason Balla’s new-ish solo work as Accessory. There’s a construction similarity in the way the song’s he’s just shared sound, but in that same fashion, there’s definitely something lighter burrowing up from beneath. Each of the two tracks seems textured with imperfections and charm, starting off in this sort of solitary mode that unfurls into a great expanse of pop magnificence. “Ums” is a bit brighter than “Do You” upon first listen, but the last minute of the latter is just this blissed out expanse of indie rock you can’t ignore. Play both of these jams as much as you want, as you won’t tire here.

Home Front Drop New Single

I was just talking to B.Gray yesterday about my need for something that felt energetic like the best of synth pop, but had just enough of an edge to keep my rock n’ roll desires in check. Lo and behold, Home Front drop one last glimpse into their Watch It Die LP; it sounds like the Killers, if they weren’t so dramatic, instead growing up with a skateboard beneath their feet. The whole of the song embraces this anthemic quality, as if they were building arena rock hits they could deliver to you in small dingy spaces that would make you feel alive. The new LP is out on Friday via La Vida Es Un Mus Discos.

Bill Callahan Announces My Days of 58

I don’t think we all listen to enough of Bill Callahan; I’m not saying that he’s going to solve world issues, but hearing a new single immediately brings me to a place where I can find my own peace. When you press play below, you’re going to meet a deep-throated croon and lower octave strums; those heavier notes begin to embrace a lighter, hopeful strum, which in turn, changes Bill’s voice. For moments, he flirts with pop stardom, as string arrangements buoy his notes, only for Callahan to retreat into his more solemn delivery. Like all his work, it feels as if he’s operating as if each song has its own linear plot, twisting and turning until the tune hits a climactic moment that highlights his songwriting craft; the accents and nuance in the backing arrangements definitely highlight each little movement. Drag City will release My Days of 58, which comes out in February of next year!

New Video Mikky and the Doom

A few weeks back the good folks of Mikky & the Doom reached out with their new video; I totally loved it, but then life caught up to me and it got lost in the world of unanswered emails. I should have been on it though, as this track’s blown up in a matter of days…deservingly so. The tune offers up a blend of sultry garage rock and glam pop, sort of like if you got a punk rock version of Chromeo coming at you; the lyrical content is clever and meant to be fun, packaged in this gritty bit of hook-laden rock. Word on the street is their finishing up an album, so keep an eye out for a fresh record!

More New Music from Leatherette

You know I love to keep you up to date on the Italian scene, and one of my favorite groups overseas is Leatherette, who’ve just dropped another jam from their forthcoming Ritmo Lento LP. This track specializes in a blend of slowcore and post-punk, creating this wash that lets you soak in the waves of guitar as they nip at your ears again and again. I’m also a big fan of the way the group kind of combine their vocal work, all of the voices coming together to really deliver an emphatic bit of last minute joy. The new LP is out on November 28th via Bronson Recordings.

Night Teacher Share World to Close + Drop Year of the Snake

Mondays are great for reflection, and in that spirit, I’m circling back to some old emails and releases like the recent LP from Night Teacher. I’ll admit, the single below is good, but it avoids immediacy, begging you to follow singer Lilly Bechtel’s vocal moves, calling to you like some sort of folk siren, waiting to smash your ship to pieces. That eruption does jump in, beautifully executed at the 1:29 mark where it bursts forth which such force that I immediately opened up the old laptop to start writing. It’s a really great jam, and once you fall in love below, you’ll want to skip over to hear Year of the Snake, the new LP that just dropped!

Emma Russack Shares New Single

I missed out on the first new single from Emma Russack, one of my favorite songwriters from the Aussie scene; she’s got a new EP titled 5 Timothee Chalamet Instagram Captions coming out in a few weeks, and I’m definitely loving this new single. If you listen, it almost feels like a little country ballad penned here in Texas, with a kind of wayward swing to it, punctuated by Emma’s sparkling voice. As a middle school teacher, the double entendre of the song isn’t lost on me (nor my students who find it hilarious). As always, her songwriting craft and charms as an artist are on full display; the new EP is out on November 21st via Dinosaur City.

Death Hags Shares Orphee 53 Video

This summer, LA-based artist Death Hags unleashed Big Grey Sun #5 upon the world, a collection of synthetic pop tunes that burned and smoldered, giving off heat in the most pleasantly passive manner. Today, one of the standout tunes get the video treatment, and as folks are looking towards their year-end lists, it’s a chance to remind you of some overlooked gems you might not have hit. I love the subtlety of the beat work, as there’s a throbbing pulse buried way beneath the surface, letting the poppier notes kind of flutter in the foreground as Lola G.’s voice echoes through your listening room. A peaceful bit of synthpop never did you wrong; the whole of the LP is available HERE.

Leilani Patao Shares Portrait + Releases Daisy

Over the last few years, Audio Antihero has been gathering up a solid stable of acts of great songwriting, such as Frog. Today, they release a new Ep from Leilani Patao, and I was really drawn to the track below, so felt like we could start you on the right foot today. It’s a slow burn, with the vocals and guitar work really low in their presentation; there is a little vocal lift that highlights Patao’s ability to weave in subtle melodies into her songwriting, and those little nuances are what will keep you coming back to Daisy. Maraudeur Return with Syncope

I’ve already been hyping the new Marauder LP, Flaschentrager, and you can now hear another gem of post-punk revelry to create your own anticipation. The infectiousness greets you immediately, snapping you into the groove with a bounding rhythm section that propels you into a full on body-boogie. The vocals embrace that sort of cavernous dissonance, operating like an echo fading in and out bf ghostly hallways. Upbeat and dark, you’ll come back to live off the energy of the tune again and again. Flaschentrager is out on next Friday via Feel It Records, and you’ll want to grab a copy!
