Will Johnson Shares Sleuthed/Full Cuts EP

If you were paying attention to our friends over at Keeled Scales, you hopefully grabbed a copy of No Ordinary Crown, last year’s excellent Will Johnson LP. And, if you loved that record, you’re in luck as Will has released a companion EP today that matches up with the sentiment that filled that LP. You’ll get a few demo versions from the album, which Will recorded in various locales, but the special gift you’ll want it “Frame It,” the EP’s opening tune. It’s a track of sincerity, with Johnson’s voice an absolute highlight, especially when that guitar slides in behind his strum to let us all get lost in the world. Stream the EP below!

 

Good Morning Announce Surprise LP

RayRay and I love Good Morning, and in fact, I even took the band to grab an Arma-delo the last time they were in Austin, so we’ve got to get behind the announcement of a surprise second LP from the group in 2024. It’s a meandering 8 minute pop rock track, embracing the title by just floating through the ether and coolly hitting your ears; it could even be considered easy listening, if you were into that sort of thing…which we are! Don’t be scared away by the length, as they fill that space with plenty of musicality and vocals, so it’s more like a classic Good Morning pop song, stretched for your benefit. The Accident will be out on November 29th.

Horsegirl Share 2468 Video + Announce New Album

This track and news will likely blow up in about ten minutes, so I just wanted to make sure we had it up. Horsegirl have been on a hot streak, and this new single is so playful and steadying, that you’re really going to find yourself stuck in this infectious loop…though I don’t think you’ll mind once you press play. Looks like they’re playing with syllables and such on their new LP, Phonetics On and On, which will be released by Matador Records on Valentine’s Day. This band rips and that’s really all you need to know.

Kim Deal Share Nobody Loves You More

I know Kim Deal‘s been at the songwriting game for decades, but I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect to love her new solo effort quite as much as I do, at least based upon the singles we’ve heard. This go round, there’s more of a switch to a ballad format, eventually erupting into a full swing arrangement that buoys the overall vibe. It begins with Deal working atop a snappy percussive element and elegant string work, using her voice to create the emotional pull; it’s a quiet performance, but one that feels like it’s the sort of glue that will tie the whole LP together. There’s a burst of horns and strings, and you feel like she’s in the Copa, but it settles, closing with the more pensive performance where the tune began. Nobody Loves You More is out this Friday via 4AD.

Wylderness Offer Big Idea

A few years removed from their last record, Big Plans for a Blue World, Cardiff outfit Wylderness return with a wonderful Monday morning single for your ears. I’m definitely infatuated with the guitar sound, primarily the way it dances into the opening moments, setting the tone for the rhythm to join and add their emphatic touch. Each vocal note seems to hang in the air, waiting to fall upon the listener’s ears. The balance between those angular ringing guitar lines and the angelic vocals is the perfect balance, creating that natural sense of longing to be part of something greater than yourself…the perfect Monday offering. Look for a new EP in 2025 from this lot.

Club 8 Share Another New Single

Not sure exactly what’s going on, but the Swedish waters have been creating a bevy of new tunes from acts like Red Sleeping Beauty and Club 8. Both acts have been tossing out a single a month, and I’ve been standing by waiting each new installment, like this fresh tune from Club 8. They’ve been excellent this year, infusing a little more energetic pulses into their sound, as you can hear here; the snapping drum work propels the song forward, though its placement just behind the vocals is perfect for staying clear of the natural joy provided by the cruise of the vocals. If pop music is your thing, this song hits the spot!

Last Week’s Jams (11.11 – 11.15)

After a fairly slow week, we hit it hard this week, bringing you a nice collection of great tunes, as we’re focused on that side while everyone else is scrambling to wrap up their year end lists. There was a heavy Austin contingent, particularly as we announced we’ll be dropping the new EP from Fantastic Purple Spots; Austin also brought us new stuff from Variety, Burgess Meredith, David Israel, and Being Dead. The Laughing Chimes made us realize that there’s still time left in 2024 for brilliant pop music, while Feeling Figures popped in with a video to remind us how great their last LP was. And, all of it kicks off with a great introduction to Lone Striker. Little bit of this, little bit of that, little bit of Dwight Yoakam.

 

Products Band Share Steady/Sugarless

We spent a lot of time spreading the world on Some Sudden Weather, the last LP from Products Band, so we were excited to hear there was a fresh tune from the Minneapolis outfit. Trickling in with a quieted vocal, the song erupts with a crash of distortion that rip right through your speakers. As the tune pushes forward, the song pushes this bit of urgency, driving the vocals into higher pitches as the song builds and builds, only to halt suddenly. Then its over. You’ll have to go back and press play again and again to fully digest the littlest nuances that make this a solid Friday jam session.

Casual Technicians Offer This Emotion + Release New LP

Perhaps one album a year isn’t enough, or so say Casual Technicians, who release their brand new LP today (I’ll have it in a streams post later), but wanted to shout out this single. It’s the closing track, and in a sense, reminds me of early works from Peter and the Wolf, sort of operating that bedroom jam lo-fi folk vibe. Guitars are light and the production feels minimal, but the songwriting and emotion gets its hooks in you, even offering up some slight little oddball moments. This is the sort of wistful folk you deserve on a Friday, so be sure to check out all of Deeply Unworthy, out today via Repeating Cloud.

Icarus Phoenix Shares Old Sleep Singer

Just a few months ago Icarus Phoenix released I Should Have Known the Things You Never Said, and Drew Danburry has shown no signs of slowing down after that LP, releasing a slew of singles and plans for a Children’s Book/Album on the horizon. This track is a response to Josaleigh Pollett’s “Sad Old Sleep Singers,” but it seems more of a celebration of the people that lift you up when shit hit the fan. No need to dive too far into details, as the lyrical content puts it on the table, but we’ve got to find our own support system, our own way to crawl out of the hole. What? You thought I wouldn’t get you in your feelings on a Friday?
