Dustin James Shares Paper Star

As we draw nearer the Winter season, we’re all likely looking for music to hibernate to, music you can wrap around you and find warmth and solace. Today, that music has come early, by way of Dustin James; he’s released the first single and title track from the forthcoming Paper Star LP. There are overlapping guitar lines, one sort of like a journeying leaf, floating through the stream of strumming that holds the track together; they intermingle, dancing and swirling together atop a quieted beat. James’ vocals, too, feel like a rolling seasonal change, hanging on the edge of the cold, beckoning to come inside and sit by the fire. Paper Star drops on October 22nd.

New Single from Boyracer

When you have a storied history like Boyracer, you can afford to go about band life in your own way; you can drop singles when you want, record with your friends, put it out on your own terms. But, you’ve got to have the songs, and it’s a good thing Stew and company can still crank out a solid pop number. And, while the guitar playing is certainly Stew, there’s a clarity to this song that highlights the charm in his songwriting; I love the way Riley’s voice carefully supports when called upon, but all of it leaving the mix balanced so the sweetness rises to the top. The band are releasing Seaside Riot on Halloween via Emotional Response and Jigsaw!

Spiral XP Share Window Room

We’re only ten days out from the next Spiral XP release, and another tune hit yesterday that continues to have the group high upon our list of anticipated releases that are wrapping up the end of the year. This tune runs with two distinctive sounds, both worthy of following along; the melodic center is the nervous system, holding the track together, all the while the noise rings out in the track’s outer sphere. While they seem to work in juxtaposition, the two sounds are melded together, thus creating the band’s perfect balancing act. I Wish I Was a Rat it out on October 18th via Danger Collective.

Pets Share Fixed Taunt

There were a few sprinkles of Austin act Pets that came to my attention (you can check them by clicking on the band’s hyperlink). But, with that being said, I didn’t expect the band to come out of the gate and rule like this new single does. They’re operating with this melodic dissonance, oftentimes working with this speediness that evolves into blissed out moments of an ethereal nature…particularly when the vocals seem to just hang in the air, almost lifelessly, before crashing back into the core of the song. If you’re driving around Austin, looking to find what rips, well, this is it. Crank it up and dig in. Hopefully there’s more real soon!

Lily Seabird Signs to Lame-O Records

After the excellent Alas dropped, it makes sense that Vermont’s Lily Seabird would pop up more often in the scene, and with that, she’s announced today that she’s signed with Lame-O Records. The label will reissue that LP, with a bonus Acoustic EP, featuring two new songs, one which we’ve got below. You’ll press play, then you’ll be hurtled into the depths of the songwriting, as careful strums accent the striking vocal performance; it has this huge personality, though if you listen carefully, you can almost hear the vocals as they’re pulled from the depths of Lily’s soul. If you. missed Alas, then you can stream it all HERE. The reissue will be out on November 15th.

2nd Grade Share Three New Singles

Every couple of weeks, 2nd Grade are dropping a couple of singles, or in this case, three new singles; I’m hoping we’ll get to hear the entirety of their new record before the whole record drops! “I Wanna Be On Your Mind” employs the modern take on powerpop, albeit the softer version that feels best for headphone listens. That’s not the case for “Like a Wild Thing,” which hits the speakers with a little more emphatic punch; the guitars just have more swagger to them, driving that rock fight into the track. “Uncontrollably Cool” almost feels like its adhering to jangling indiepop, particularly with those crisp guitar notes that circle throughout. All these songs pop up on Scheduled Explosions, available for complete enjoyment on October 25th via Double Double Whammy.

AUA Share Allies Single

While AUA prep their third album, I’m just now getting into the old ones, all because this new jam totally rips. It’s sort of a progressive punk styling, working with this rhythmic sensation that really drives the song, naturally. I mean, they’re just employing synths, bass and drums, and manage to create this wall of chaos that continuously grinds and churns right in your ear. There’s even some little synth solos, bringing the noise to the forefront as they bring you into the darker textures that unfold in the latter half. They’ll be releasing Painkiller No. 1 on November 8th, for those willing to take some risks.

Alpaca Sports Return with Tomorrow I’ll Be Fine

It’s been a minute since we last heard from Swedish popsters, Alpaca Sports, but they return in a huge way on their brand new single. They’re channeling that soulful jangle that most folks associated with Sarah or C86, and while I can certainly hear those moments shining through, the vocal harmonies craft something a lot more recent. To me, and I’m only one person, they kind of seem like the culmination of studying the melodic constructs of Pains of Being Pure at Heart; they strip the structure in order to offer the saccharine side, leaving us with this glittery pop gem that is currently stuck bouncing inside my head. We’re being told there’s a new album on the horizon, courtesy of Elefant.

Slack Times Share Coattails Single

Looking back again at last week’s great releases, we felt like we couldn’t let Meritorio Records hog all the headlines, so we saved this Slack Times track for you, as nothing is likely to sweeten a ditty from this trio. After a little bit of a lineup change, they’ve really honed in on their craft, taking a walk down the slow-burning that resembles a bit of the fog-pop scene of current San Francisco, or maybe even the nostalgic wayward jangles of Galaxie 500. Honestly, if there’s anything to be upset about, it’s the fact that their new Gone Things EP only has 4 songs; it drops on Friday!

Mt Misery Share Sunday Song

If you woke up today feeling like the world has you down (I hope that’s not the case), then might we turn you onto the latest from Mt. Misery; they offer up their new single like flowery breeze, blowing through your room and making everything feel absolutely refreshing. It’s like if Teenage Fanclub and the Lucksmiths had a beautiful new born baby together, it would sound exactly like this, mixing bits of both bands to create this swirl of pop music that’s almost too charming to be true. Once you’ve had a listen, you’ll know why we’re saving a spot for the group’s new Love In Mind LP, out on November 1st via Prefect Records.
