The Submissives Share Maybe Someday Single

When you listen to the Submissives, they force you to readjust your ears. Not because you either party is doing something wrong, but they simply encourage you to reposition your thoughts on what modern indie rock has become. In a get-hits-quick climate, certain styles become a dime-a-dozen, but I’m pretty sure there aren’t too many folks around operating like this Quebec outfit. They bend and mold discordant notes into the faintest hint of melodic movement; the strings almost seem like they’re just being stretched or fine-tuned, not quite ready for the show. Still, they move forward, creeping along in a sense that feels both theatrical and refreshing. Live at Value Sound Studios is out on October 11th.

The Psych Fi’s Announce Can Con

A new signing announcement for Bobo Integral is always a huge deal on my end of things, and I’m really drawn into this first peek at The Psych Fi’s. They offer up a slow burn on the front half of this single, sort of something that you’d find on any psychedelic ballad collection; it’s drawn out and lonesome, but it doesn’t stay there for long. Eventually, it unfolds into more of a traditional psychedelic meandering, though as the guitars take on some of that fire, the tune still feels fairly drawn out; meant to meditate on the craft, then break out into a stomp as they adopt a bit of a Southern rock boogie. They’ll release their new album, Can Con, on December 4th!

Forced Model Crossed Off Single

Sometimes, the best rock n’ roll pushes back, forces you to adjust, then rewards you for taking risks, and that sums up the approach from Force Model on their latest single. They open the tune with these discordant bits of post-hardcore, not too far a cry from where many a Texas act traveled in the 90s. But, a stuttered drum sets up a plot twist, turning the track towards a melodic soar; the chords circulate before they get yanked back into a propulsive beat that encourages toe-tapping whilst still on the edge of aggressiveness. While they may have flirted with an abrasive brand of 90s rock, they quickly settle into this memorable bit of guitar pop charms that has me focused on what they’ll do next!

Slack Times Announce Gone Things EP

It’s been a couple of years since we fell in love with Carried Away, the last we heard from Alabama’s Slack Times. Alas, we need look to the past no more, as the group have a brand new EP on the way. It’s a brief venture, twirling jangling guitars before our yes, then moving right into a rollicking bit of ups and downs, with the vocals delivered in a manner that feels like lost territory between sweet indiepop and the jangles of the Clean. There’s certainly some mannerisms in the songwriting that all the kids, like us, will love. Gone Things EP is slated for a release on October 11th via Meritorio Records.

Nothing Natural Drop Cherry Single

You’ve got to wake up right now. Bang your head and get into the day! What better way than by cranking this alt-rock jam from Nothing Natural. This certainly feels like the group have adopted a post-grunge style this go round, hitting at those crunchy riffs, though I appreciate their ability to keep the tunes tight enough to a melodic center that you can still find a bit of pop to indulge. Then the chorus, leading into the following fold both offer up a softness that reveals the group’s penchant for sweetening your heavy rock n’ roll stylings. They release Cold Star on October 18th via Cherub Dream Records.

A Place to Bury Strangers Share Bad Idea

Your speakers aren’t broken. A Place to Bury Strangers are just here to shred the cones to bits, hurtling razor-sharp distorted riffs at you; they’re running directly at you, smothering the vocals in this cavernous wall of noise. There’s a little bit of respite for you, with shotgun drum hits echoing in the front of the mix while everyone catches their breath. Of course, they don’t stay long pushing your right back to the suffocating realm of noise. Sort of sounds like the bastard child of Sonic Youth and the Black Angels, so I’m digging it. They’re new record Synthesizer is out on October 4th via Dedstrange.

Greg Mendez Signs to Dead Oceans

Last year was a huge year for Greg Mendez, as the singer finally seemed to received the accolades that have been circulating about his name for years. And, what better way to follow that up than by a signing with Dead Oceans, as he’s just announced today. While the song itself is fairly simple, mostly working with a keyboard and Greg’s vocals, there’s something about a careful listen that really unfolds in this magical way. You can hear the tape rolling, detailing this innocence that seems to come with Mendez’s craft, letting you know and think that you’re the only one he’s singing to, in the most special way. First Time/Alone EP is out on October 18th.

Cosmopaark Share Olive Tree

French outfit Cosmopaark are in the midst of a solid run of tunes, with a great record last year and now a new EP on the horizon. We get another peek under the lid with their latest tune, which is a perfect blend of the light and dark that’s been captivating audiences of late. They certainly play up the softness, particularly in that very first verse, running the song over a light strum and what sounds like a sampled beat. But, they definitely dive right into the quietloud approach, blasting the warbling walls of distorted guitars right out into the world; it’s the perfect way to dive into what we can expect from the Backyard EP, out on October 18th via Howlin Banana Recordsand Stellar Frequencies.

Photay Shares Global Wind Trade

Mornings are all about setting you up for your day, and for me, the new Photay tune does the perfect job of setting you up, then rolling out from under your feet. It’s like breakfast, where you get a little sample, you ride it out, then you bound at the door with a new sense of energy that’s meant to carry you through the day. The shifts that you’re presented with are definitely subtle, often emphasized by a punch up in the beat or a kind of kick that sets a new twist in motion. Every step of the way, there’s a bit of encouragement, pronounced volume, snappier drum sample, etc, and all of it helps the storytelling without ever whispering a word. Look for Windswept, the new LP, this Friday.

Abandoned Buildings Release Rabbit Holes

Having dabbled in the realms of dream pop for some time, Abandoned Buildings, for my two cents, seem to be taking on an almost classic brand of rock n’ roll; they’re bridging their dreamy realm with bits and pieces of a sound that feels like Jeff Buckley. It’s difficult to describe, but there’s roll to the track that certainly reminds me of the elegance of “Grace” by the aforementioned Buckley. Maybe I’m way off, but it brought me deep within the song, where they then turned to a lighter ambiance, floating the tune into this otherworldly realm that still feels like its circling my brain. They have a new album titled Eroding Light, and we’ll have more info as we get it!
