Traitrs Drop Dark Wave Single

Wanted to wake up this morning to a bit of brooding energy, and Traitr‘s latest single is doing the trick, and I’m hoping that it returns the favor to you. You’ll find a thunderous beat pounding on the floor, with a gothic vocal performance dominating the road ahead; I do think there are some slight little tonal twists too, altering the way the song is to be heard. When the chorus drops in, the background music opens up, throwing in the slightest hint of danceable hook into the mix, which is absolutely perfect for us all. This brand new single is ready for all of you choosing to live in the shadowy corners!

Greg Weeks Returns with If the Sun Dies

After stepping away from the scene for nearly two decades, Greg Weeks has returned with news of a new record, thus the below single coming your way. The light strum of the guitar is what drew me into the songwriting; it’s got that powerful emotive quality that makes you feel alive, or at least aware of what’s around you. Weeks’ voice has this quiet beauty to it, careful not to push itself away from the central melody that moves the track along. Greg fleshes out the entire track with these light flourishes of added instrumentation, carefully lifting the tune to your ears. If the Sun Dies will be out December 12th.

Glaascats Ready Dust LP

Over in Switzerland, Glaascats are preparing a dreamy bit of rock n’ roll, hoping to build upon a combination of drifting guitar chords and hazy vocals to grab the masses on their new Dust LP. The patience of the tune is perfect, carefully bounding upon the back of a heavy beat and twanging note that seems to keep the rhythm perfectly. In the vocals, you get this sort of sedate note up front, almost melancholy, but it moves into the ethereal world when the group allow the backing vocals to come into the fray, fluttering about behind the front of the mix, creating this angelic whisper. Look for Dust on October 16th.

Day Collector Share Debut Single

David Kitz and Luke McQueeny (Conflict at Serenity Pools) have long been friends and collaborators, but today they put that friendship together for their new project, Day Collector…with the name an homage to their late friend June Sanregert. Their goal was to create something that neared the perfect mixture of Arthur Russell and Wilco, so the warmth of the songwriting and spirit is almost immediate. The steadiness of the tune really allows the duo to build melodic moments that seem to float atop the strumming, finally cresting around the 2:20 mark when just the faintest hint of noise gets build in for structure and differentiation. Looking forward to where the group will go!

Marcus O’ Neill Shares Eternal Flame Video

Clearly I’m all about that garage pop structure today, with another morning nod to the genre courtesy of Marcus O’Neill and his cover of The Bangles classic “Eternal Flame.” If you weren’t aware that it’s a cover, you’d likely have no idea, as the style stretches about as far away as one could without forgetting the mentality of the tune; you do get a momentary little slow down a la the original mid-tune. It’s got a little bit of an R&B swagger to the garage style, which is one of the brilliant way O’Neill manages to make the tune relevant. This song features on the new LP, Bonus Extra Et Cetra, out October 3rd via Tall Order Records.

Teenage Tom Petties Share Tough Cookies

If you haven’t made room for Rally the Tropes on your purchase list, then you might want to reevaluate your budget this month, as their new single solidifies the forthcoming Teenage Tom Petties record as a must have. Like most TTP tunes, there’s a natural grittiness to the recording process, giving the tune a huge edginess and DIY mentality. But, while I adore that aspect and its lo-fi aesthetics, their penchant for hooks and guitarmonies, making everything they do infectious and with just enough punch to keep the cool kids off my back. Love looking forward to this new LP, which drops via Repeating Cloud // Safe Suburban Home on October 24th.

Pansy Share Mercy Kill Me

Vivian McCall, formerly of Jungle Green has perhaps been piling away the tunes that would make up her debut album under the name Pansy; it’s a record that documents her own transition, detailing her life before, during and after the transition. While the depths of the songwriting are quite personal, the boldness of the songs are enormous, bringing in classic power pop sounds with jangling guitars that just crush your soul in the best way possible. If you’re looking for huge melodies built into a nice power pop sound that you’d think Alex Chilton helped pen. This single is the follow up from her self-titled debut album, courtesy of Earth Libraries.

Banti Buli Announces Stroll Down Pearl, The Night is Young

I’m a huge sucker for a gentle ballad, particularly if its overly playful or slightly left of the dial; I tend to think of Moldy Peaches at first when I think of this genre. Well, the new single from Banti Buli with his friend Ragu, is much like that, using a really light strum and gently overlapping vocals that seemingly flirt with stepping on one another. They fill the empty space behind with these light little touches and fluttering bird sounds, all of it matched perfectly to this drifting video that offers its own set of charms when matched up. This new song features on the new LP, Stroll Down Pearl, The Night Is Young, which comes out November 7th.

 

Power Pop from Curling

There is so much going on in this new Curling tune that you sort of have to peel it layer by layer, uncovering new little bits and pieces along way. When it opens with this synthesized wash you’re momentarily thinking you might be on some space-aged journey, and you’re not entirely far off on that one…though they quickly push into brilliant power pop moments; there’s something in the craft that’s both 90s alt rock and 2000s indie…like Ash partying with Grandaddy. Then, as the tune progresses, they pull back some of the covers on their craft, leaving you with these subtle melodies before smashing forth with more pop hooks. Two Day Old Tony Molina

I know as we focus on the immediacy of coverage, it may seem silly that I didn’t cover Tony Molina news when it first hit the other day. Honestly, I was a bit overwhelmed, but as a huge fan of Tony’s work, I really wanted to sit with the tracks and just soak in their charms. Each of the tunes hanging below offers a little bit of a glimpse at Molina’s work over the years, perhaps with a nod towards future works; I keep thinking that “Violets of Dawn” sounds older and wiser while “FC ’23” feels very much steeped in his last few LPs, all of it obviously good. Then he brings on some Gary Olson trumpet for “Faded Holiday” and you know you’re in the right place. All of these tracks feature on a new 21 song long-player titled On This Day coming out November 14th via Slumberland Records/Olde Fade/Speakeasy Studios SF.
