Life Strike Drop Downwinders Single

I have no idea how you write about something some harmful and make it seem so beautiful and fun, but here we are with the latest from Life Strike. The band have based their latest single on those exposed to areas of nuclear testing, yet somehow they manage to make it seem like something we all want to cheer. Now, I’m not trying to diminish those horrors, but there’s just something about this track that screams for high volume and fist pumping; there’s an urgency in those sharp guitar licks that will have you banging your head and singing at the top of your lungs. Honestly, this is one of those songs that stays with you, and I can’t wait to hear Peak Dystopia, out July 14th via Bobo Integral.

Obligatory Teenage Fanclub Post

Yesterday there was news that Teenage Fanclub would be releasing a fresh record, and since I’m late to the party and you likely already heard the single, we’ll start our day here. Now, perhaps this is a bit of a stretch, but as someone who was raised by a hippie, this feels like this is the Grateful Dead season of the band. The melodies, which have always been brilliant, seem to take on this more almost pastoral sensation, with the whole group sort of riding on this locomotive rhythm guitar. Sure, there’s the lead guitar sliding in here and there in its own slithery manner, but I promise you, if you slid this track in a remastered version of Workingman’s Dead, it wouldn’t be out of place. Their new album, Nothing Lasts Forever, is out on 9.22 via Merge Records.

Faunas Release Avid Single

Having started out as a loud bit of punk, it seems Faunas have now settled into their shoes, willing to lean into all sides of their songwriting abilities as they prep Paint the Birds. There’s definitely not still a bit of punk remnants on the way the guitars continue to climb in this tune, but you’d most likely file this under warmed guitar pop vibes. All the vocal notes are perfectly smoothed, almost like they’re channeling Stevie Nicks at points, but I keep getting stuck on the guitars. They open the tune, then hang behind the voice, sort of weaving this intricate fabric that definitely elevates each rhythmic note of the verses. If you’re digging, Paint the Birds is out on June 20th.

XDS Announce Bicycle Ripper

I honestly do not know too much about XDS, other than the band formerly known as Experimental Dental School has a new LP coming from Mt. St. Mtn., one of my most trusted musical resources. They’ve titled their new album Bicycle Ripper, which for some reason made me want to describe this as the soundtrack to the old Nintendo classic, Paperboy. It has that natural sort of slow movement, with little accented flares here and there, like when you hit the mailbox just perfectly, or have to dodge that barking dog. It’s an oddity of sorts, but in the most captivating fashion. If you’re looking to take your noise pop and really get it out there, then might I suggest you try this on for size? Bicycle Ripper drops on June 16th.

Twine Share My God Single

Please do not let those gentle string pieces opening this Twine track fool you; there’s a danger lurking, hanging just on the edge of those discordant guitar licks in the background. Listening to this Aussie outfit reminds me of this sort of sweet spot between Frightened Rabbit and Cursive; it has this quality that borders on both strikingly beautiful and explosive at the same time. But, just as easily as they can explode through your speakers, they can pull it all back and keep the vibe succinct so you’re constantly being pulled bag and forth, like a tug-o-war between light and dark. You know, just another exciting outfit from Australia, courtesy of Kitty Records.

Tractor Beam Share Sex Appeal Single

When I first heard Sasha Balazic’s voice on this Tractor Beam track, I immediately thought of ATH favorite Lachlan Denton; it’s got a slightly distinct tone to it, though still feels like you’re snuggling with a friend under a blanket. There’s a lightness to the song, aided by the accompanying vocals that come with it, all of it wrapped together to kind of lift you on the edges of the wind as your thoughts turn to positive vibes and sunny days. If you’re enjoying what you’re hearing from the group, keep an eye out, as they’re rumored to have an LP from Kingfisher Bluez later in the year.

The Wedding Present Release 24 Songs

The Wedding Present is one of my favorite bands, period. They spent a lot of their 2022 dropping rad singles left and right, just knocking out bangers like it was no big deal. Luckily, if you missed out on those, you can now collect them all on one glorious compilation album titled 24 Songs. It features the following tune, with a nice vocal performance from Louise Wener of Sleeper; it’s one of the mellower tunes, reminding me of the Cinerama stuff that Gedge has done on the side. Anyways, never a bad day when you can get a Wedding Present tune up; 24 songs is out now in the UK, with a US version dropping on June 23rd via HHBTM.

Max Bien Khan Announces When I Cross It Off

If you are in search of a little bit of an introspective singer-songwriter, with just a hint of humor and self-deprecation, then try on New Orleans artist Max Bien Khan. You can easily here where Khan might slide into bed next to Silver Jews or the like, but there’s a touch more twang in the songwriting. I like that, as its definitely something that’s close to home for us, plus it sort of brings about that campfire/group party vibe, which makes sense as Max’s bandcamp describes his music as “partying to someone’s diary,” so the intimacy checks here. Good tune, mellow summer vibes; When I Cross It Off is out on July 7th.

Last Week’s Jams (5.15 – 5.19)

It was a busy week to start, then as usual at this time of year, I teetered out with our coverage; I blame the fact that I stayed up late to catch a great set from En Attendant Ana. We covered a lot of territory, bringing in an old school song from Heavenly, but with a new video to celebrate. Austin got some love with another great Feeling Small tune, plus some bonus Being Dead coverage popping up in there. ATH faves Melenas announced a new record, so really, we had an all out awesome week on our end. Feel free to stop in and check out what we had going.

New Split Screen EP from Walk Home Drunk & Comite Balneaire

Two of my absolute favorite labels as of late, Hidden Bay Records/Safe Suburban Home, have teamed up to bring us a new Split Screen EP, with songs from both Walk Home Drunk and Comite Balneaire. For their part, Walk Home Drunk offers up this gentle tease in the verses; a steady beat and snuggling vocals walk you right into the chorus where the song opens up and gets a bit fuzzy with these guitar lines that pop and skitter. On the other side, you get Comite Balneaire creating this dense realm for what seems like a post-punk rainstorm; the guitars are heavy, almost feeling like sheets of melodic rain falling upon you at all times. Both tracks might have some sonic simlarities, which makes sense considering the two projects are solo monikers for members of Docks/No Drama. Anyways, Split Screen EP will be out June 2nd.
