First Names Drop Coconut Oil

Austin’s First Names are a group we’ve been keeping our eyes on the last few years, and they’ve just dropped this delicious new single that I’m totally digging. There’s this heavy psych wall that sets the mood, but its soon peeled back to reveal the melodic guitar shuffling that rides throughout the verses. Honestly, one of my favorite pieces about this number is the high-pitched vocal work; it reminds me of our friends in Colourmusic, stretching the boundaries of what we deem as perfectly melodic. And just in case you missed those heavy riffs from the opening, they splice them in and out of the song, working with this huge wall of fuzz to balance the whole jam. Dig it.

Was a bit of a hectic week, as I was out of town for a good part of last week, so RayRay helmed things solo, keeping you up to date with new jams from The Berries and Sorry. I crept in towards the end of the week with recent favorites like Key Out and Scarves, but I was most excited to hear new music from Bubblegum Lemonade hitting the airwaves! Oh! And a brand new album out of the blue from Neil Brogan! I mean, it was a short week coverage-wise, but some surefire jams to listen to in here.

Bubblegum Lemonade Return with Never Have I Ever EP

It’s been a minute since we’ve heard the charming voice of Laz and his project, Bubblegum Lemonade, but man, what a way to return. I’m immediately drawn to the guitar sound, as I’m sure many of the pop aficionados will be too! Then there’s something really special about the his voice seems to rush into the verses, only to turn into a gentle melody a few syllables later, buoyed by sublime backing vocals. Plus, there’s a nice little mid-tune change around the 1:20 mark that gives a nice little emphatic bit of harmony to the song before dancing its way into a handclap-laden solo. Always love his work; the Never Have I Ever EP is out via Matinee Recordings, with a brand new LP slated to come out later in the year!

Scarves Share Title Track, Delicate Creatures

Scarves are still spitting out catchy indie rock numbers as we head towards the release of Delicate Creatures, and today, we get the band’s title track from that new LP. Lyrically, the song hits on how our lives can change instantaneously in this fragile world, facing our mortality and our constant struggles, with Niko hoping “you make an impact” on the world around you. It’s a bit of hope thrown into the world, but the way the band balance the gentle nature and fragility in both lyrical content and musical vibes is perfect; they erupt when you least expect it, bursting forth with emotion in a split instant, then settle. Walking the tightrope between lyrics and sound is a true gift, so untie the bow and enjoy this new single from their Delicate Creatures record, out August 26th.

The Boys with the Perpetual Nervousness Share In the Right

If you’re lining up your anticipated releases scheduled for the end of the year, then you should surely have The Boys with the Perpetual Nervousness penciled in your “must listen” category. Today we get the third single from the band’s forthcoming LP, and it’s a straight up pop rock gem. The band have always operated with a velvety vocal approach, and that’s balanced out by the fuzzy riffs banging through your speakers, reminiscent of Teenage Fanclub. It feels jittery, teetering on the edge of an panic attack, then opens right up into their melodic pop rock brand, smoothing the wrinkles and winning us over. The Third Wave Of is out on September 9th via Bobo Integral.

Key Out Drop New Single, Announce Afterville

Sydney’s Key Out just announced that they’ve got a new LP lined up, and with their new single officially in the world, I wanted to be here to encourage you to give them a little listen. There’s something really special about the way the guitars and the drums meet up at the beginning of this song to set it all off; it immediately reminded me of late 90s college jams, and for some reason, Rainer Maria. But, the thumping drums get offset with the kindness of the vocal tones, softening the vibe a bit, before erupting into a fuzzy chorus filled with dueling harmonies. It falls somewhere between the modern pop rock styles and the charming indie rock of Nada Surf and Death Cab (at their peak!). Afterville will be out later this year via False Peak Records.

Let’s Whisper Share New Single

A few weeks back we got to hear a fresh single from Let’s Whisper, a rush of euphoria that brightened up your cheeks. On their latest single, the band churn out something that equally as grand, though its blossoming in a completely different fashion, more organic in a sense. The percussion works as the song’s backbone, with guitar lines bending about, stretching themselves out on the lawn and soaking up the little arrangement details that offer a sunny disposition to the listener. The In-Between Times look to be a collection of songs proving that everything is right in indiepop; it will be out on August 26th via Fika Recordings.

Wombo Share Seven of Cups

With Fairy Rust a few weeks away, Wombo drop in a musical curveball that highlights their songwriting prowess. Up until now, the singles we’ve gotten have been sort of off-kilter post-punk, arty and fashionable…and I mean that in the best way. This, however, is a showcase for Sydney’s vocals, like slow, smoldering paper, just burning at the edges as pieces flake off while Chadwick’s voice coolly haunts about the darkened corners of the tune. It’s a nice little plot twist in our anticipation of Fairy Rust, which is dropping on July 29th via Fire Talk.

Matt Kivel Announces Bend Reality Like a Wave

In the midst of a Texas heatwave, Matt Kivel‘s voice still carries with it a bit of sunshine, a bit of promise on the horizon. On this brand new single, there’s this great moment where his voice rises, then sort of falls into the next syllable, the sort of way Tony Molina does (if you’re looking for comparisons), and in doing so, you get drawn right into the track; you don’t get hurt by Bonnie Prince Billy lending a note or two here too! The musical subtleties allow for every note to reach that pinnacle, never stepping over the voice, and all the while letting guitar lines walk their own meandering path. Just listen to the lyric of “a new reality” when it hits, and you’ll certainly be swept into this tune. Bend Reality – Like a Wave is out on October 14th via Pedro y El Lobo.

Gee Tee Announce New Rock Phone 7″ for Goner Records

While Goner Records is busy getting the world ready for Goner Fest in September, the heralded label still has work to do, and they’re kicking off this week with the announcement of a new 7″ from Sydney’s Gee Tee. The 7″ drops this Friday, but you can check out the quick little ripper below, offering a glimpse of the insatiable quality that can be yours if you hop to it. I love the heavy drawl on the vocals, giving a bit of a dark humor to the frantic punk nature of the tune. You’re definitely going to spin this on at high volume; grab a copy HERE.
