Nightshift Share Piece Together

As the year goes on, I’m finding that I’m really stuck on bands pushing the boundaries of my boring ass expectations. Glasgow’s Nightshift continue to impress, as they kind of manipulate sounds that resonate with my tastes, yet still sound incredibly refreshing. On their latest single, there’s this rolling drum, akin to any number of like-minded acts, but when placed as the backbone of the vocal chant, it becomes meditative, almost primal in nature. You could easily find some spirituality just using the vocals and the drums…if you were looking for that. But, because they don’t seem ready to just rest with a decent time, they have this incredible guitar bit that seemingly matches the beating of the drum, though with some tonal changes. Mostly, I’m taken by the fact that this is the band’s 3rd single from their forthcoming Zoe LP, and not a one of them sound similar. Does this mean we can have an actual full album listening experience on our hands? Find out on February 26th when its drops via Trouble in Mind Records.

Borito Share Song for Dawn Video

We first caught wind of Borito due to the band’s connection to Bones Garage (who we’ve happily helped get records out into the world for), and this tune should warrant some adoration on your behalf. The video is filled with candid photos of the band traipsing about, capturing this innate playfulness that shines through in this song. I mean, if you’re not tapping your toes in step with those guitar cuts, then perhaps you need to turn this song up a bit louder! Yael’s voice also has this sort of hip dreaminess, like she’s cooler than all of us and she knows it! Congratulations are in order too, as the band drop What We Have Now today too, along with the fun video!

Clubwater Prepare Self-Titled LP

Feel like we’ve been rather light on good old school indiepop as of late, which is great that these fresh sounds from Clubwater came across my desk this morning. The group immediately jumps up with those shimmering sharp guitars over a kick-your-heels up beat in the background. Vocals enter with this smooth wistfulness, wrapping the syllables in melodic warmth ever so gently. Then the shoes get the kicked up in the chorus as the guitars churn faster, jangling through your speakers…and all the while Muhammad’s vocals seem cool and indifferent. Need some classic indiepop in your life? Well, Clubwater drop their self-titled LP this Valentines Day courtesy of Shiny Happy Records.

PACKS Share Hangman

One of the hottest labels last year, at least in consistency was Fire Talk Records, and they’re back this year with a new LP from PACKS on the horizon. The first single from the Toronto outfit is a fairly stripped down affair, at least in the front of the mix. Songwriter Madeline Link spent much of last year holed up and penning tracks, many about the loss of freedoms so many of us face during this on-going pandemic; that informs the attitude with this quieted intimacy, though the arrangements behind her add buoyancy to the song, filling out the space behind her voice with these distorted textures. We’ll have more on the new LP when the time comes!

Check Out Career Day’s Pride Was Somewhere Else EP

All our musical journeys began somewhere, and I’m not shy about my super-emo past of the late 90s; I wore the outfit and everything. And while it might not always be in my current listening rotation, when a band comes and offers up the old school style like Career Day, I definitely get nostalgic. For me, its that sucker punch of offering some soft ballad followed up by flare and distorted riffs, like the band pull off on every tune from their Pride Was Somewhere Else EP. Listening through these tracks, “Deathbed Regrets” is probably the one I’ve been pressing repeat on the most; I love that huge explosiveness of hooks that jumps through. Honestly, I like an emo band that likes to rock…so I’m on board with these jams. Check it out below!

Waves of Dread Release Endless EP

Since they began a few years ago, I’ve been increasingly pleased by Waves of Dread; they seem to operate outside the confines of traditional indie media, instead building their name on their mysterious online presence. They continue to build momentum musically too, having just dropped this great Endless EP; it opens with this epic 7 minute experimental tune, wavering between tradition and nuanced pop. Traditionalists in the shoegaze arena will likely find their pleasure in the closing track “Twilight,” but as for me, I’m staking my claim to “Way It Is;” I loved the guitar sounds that quickly peel back for this seductive, soft vocal portrayal. You can’t go wrong listening to these tunes.

CIEL Share Pretty Face

CIEL had one of my favorite tracks of 2020, and they don’t seem like they want to lose that crown in 2021, dropping in this delightful new single full of dreamy charms. Michelle Hendriks’ voice will definitely encourage a recall to Alvvays, and that’s never a bad thing on this end. Musically, the band take a classic doo wop brand of sugary pop soda, then coat it with a little bit of fuzz to blankety you in melody. Guitars shred in the distance midway, proving the point that this is more than just a little treat for your ears. This is the dream pop jam you didn’t know you needed, but now you do!

Model Village Announce World of Carp

We hadn’t heard from Cambridge outfit Model Village since their 2015 LP, Healing Centre, but it looks as if the band are back at it, with another record up their sleeves. Lily Rose has taken over vocal duties for the entirety of this forthcoming release, and her present is more than known in the performance below; it’s the tour de force that seemingly creates the movement of this track, looping back and forth as those jagged guitar riffs aim to keep pace. Nice little backing tracks build in some textured melody, weaving in playful guitar licks and bouncing monosyllables as the group gallop to a close. Another fun tune that should force you to keep an eye out for the release of World of Carp, out on March 5th.

Sasha and the Valentines Share Witches Video

We tried to hip you to Sasha and the Valentines when they dropped their Green EP back in 2019, and now that there is a new LP on the horizon, we reckon you ought to hear for yourself why we’re so excited. I think it’ll be easy to draw some comparisons to early Beach House, particularly if you’re pulling your ears close to the blossoming of Sarah Addi’s vocal performance. Sure, those similarities can’t be denied, but I love the way there’s a bit more of a pull back on the reigns from the Austin outfit; they’re kind of allowing that sort of expansive sound to roll out across the great Texas landscape, rather than force hooks down your throat. Listen to the sound flow, like the smoke from the end of this song, billowing through out your speakers and into the great musical universe. So You Think You Found Love will be out on April 16th via Oof Records.

Dry Cleaning Announce New Long Leg

Back in November the indie cognoscenti were raving about “Scratchcard Lanyard,” and now Dry Cleaning finally have the announcement of their debut LP, New Long Leg. With it comes a new single, again taking indie rock on their own terms. Musically, it begins with this sort of propulsive dancefloor rhythm, though Florence Shaw’s vocal delivery hold things back, almost dragging the song to a slower pace so that the band supporting her can craft and manipulate sounds. The rhythm section continues their movement, but the guitar work begins to take on a more post-punk sort of explanation; it reminds me a lot of the sonic soundscapes being crafted by Wire in their later releases, angular guitars dancing about in contrast to the rest of the song’s vibe. Definitely an interesting take on modern rock n’ roll, for which I’m 100% in favor; they’re debut drops on April 2nd via 4AD.
