Sleeper and Snake Share Shoot Through Video

Sometimes I like to imagine what my life would be like if I was a Waler Mitty type character, with a soundtrack written for my life. Today, it seems like Sleeper & Snake have done just that, providing me with my own theme song. From the start, the track is fairly relaxed, resting on the joint vocals of Amy Hill and Al Montfort. They don’t seem to be in any rush, just letting life come at them and riding out the ebbs and flows tossed their way. Plus, your life gets its own sax solo, though I haven’t decided if that’s life in its ascendency or on the way out, but a pleasant plot twist in a gorgeous pop song you won’t want to turn off. Fresco Shed is out now via Upset the Rhythm.

Mdou Moctar Signs with Matador Records

If you browsed through some of the more reputable end of year lists in 2019, I hope you caught Ilana: the Creator in some of those, as Mdou Moctar left us with a release that have very few peers in the grand scheme of things. Today, the Tuareg guitarist celebrates signing to Matador Records by sharing a brand new single, which should appear on a brand new LP slated for next year. The skill set in guitar work is phenomenal; its what I imagine folks who like King Gizzard would enjoy if they had less boring tastes. Mdou explains how the song is about how we lose ourselves in the midst of relationships, allowing envy and jealousy to control our lives; he hopes the he does not succumb to such a way of being. Just check this fire!

Anna McClellan Shares Raisin

If you’re going to wrap up a song in under 2 minutes you better make sure you’re packing as much goodness into that time as you can, and I’m pretty sure you’ll all agree that Anna McClellan has pulled that off extremely well with her latest single “Raisin.” We open with this great electronic organ grind, kind of jazzy, but also kind of kitsch in a fun way. Then McClellan jumps into the track, delivering these bouncy lyrical lines, punctuated by the musical element behind the vocals. But, the vocals get switched in their style, dreamily floating, perhaps an allusion to the raisin as it begins “to float and become weightless” after jumping off a cliff! Her new record I Saw First Light will be out on November 20th via Father Daughter.

Being Dead Share Underworld Video

If you live near the sputtering death throes of Austin’s music scene (thanks Adler!) you’ve certainly heard of Being Dead; they’ve been one of the most heralded acts of the last few years due to their incredible live performances and secretly hook-laden songs. In fact, a year or so ago, our ATH Records label helped them press some songs to hot wax for the Fame Money Death by Drive-By EP. Well, because great songs and great ideas never die, the band just recently dropped a video for “Underworld,” and its begging your attention this morning. You get a little pop genius as well as the band’s sense of humor in the midst of these dark times. Enjoy this treat…and maybe grab one of the last few copies HERE. Feeling like I could really go for a burger right about now!

Dayflower Release Stuck to You Single

You ever hear that shimmering guitar in all those shoegaze songs and just think…yep, this is for me? That’s really what I got when I threw on this new single from Leicester’s Dayflower; I loved how the guitar work, though beautifully shimmering, hung out really far off in the distance, allowing for the whole of the song to get swept up together. The vocals too, sort of hang back, mixing their melodies with the careful craft that surrounds them; it’s like the perfect dream pop soup, all the notes hitting just the right way to balance out every single listen…which if you love this style…you’ll get plenty of listens today!

Helena Deland Shares Pale Video

Unless you’ve been hiding in a whole the last few months, or maybe the last few years, you’re likely aware that the forthcoming Helena Deland is highly anticipated. I’ve been on board, but what I’m pleasantly surprised by on this one is the diversity when thrown in contrast to the other singles from the album cycle. This one seems to have peeled back the banana peel of dream pop, revealing a more playful, almost childlike, Deland, providing more of an immediate impact to the listener as opposed to stretching those melodies out. Don’t get me wrong, there are still a few bits of that ethereal pop stretch, but I think its a nice move to step away and give us a glimpse at a little something different. As if my needs mattered here. Someone New is out next Friday via Luminelle.

Cheekface Cover Rosie Tucker’s Lauren

I’ve admitted my adoration for Rosie Tucker‘s hit LP Never Not Never Not Never Not, and one of my favorite tracks on the record “Lauren” is getting the cover treatment from fellow Angeleno outfit Cheekface. They keep the core of the song’s infectious pop chorus, but they ramp up the rock side during the verses, giving a touch more punch. The vocal combination in the chorus does a great job of adding in that added layer of melody that pop fans crave. Plus, it gives me another reason to write about a Rosie Tucker jam, and I rarely shy away from that…thus why you can also stream the OG version below.

King Creosote Returns with Two New Tracks

Kenny Anderson, aka King Creosote, is one of those artists I always feel like is a secret I don’t want to share with others; there’s something really personal about my experience listening to his work. But, for the last few years, he’s been rather quiet, almost five years…until today. We’ve got two new tracks for you today, courtesy of Domino Record Co, and interestingly, they’re offering two vastly different versions of sound. On one hand, we get “Susie Mullen” offering this sort of proto-pop, not too far off from where acts like Peel Dream Magazine or Stereolab; its filled with textures spinning around an intoxicating melody. Turn the page over to “Walter de la Nightmare” and you receive the intimate version of Anderson’s writing, which, admittedly, is the first sound that brought me to worship at the altar of King Creosote. Both joyous tunes that I hope will encourage you to dig into his catalog; at the very least, grab these new tunes on November 27th on the new 7″.

K. Campbell Shares Every Little Thing

We’ve gotta rep the Texas scene, even beyond Austin, so when I heard this new track from K. Campbell drop the other day, I knew I had to share it with you immediately. It’s solid piece of power pop, falling somewhere between the landscape of Nada Surf and Teenage Fanclub, which doesn’t seem a bad place to find yourself. Soft melodic vocals glue the track together nicely, and the noisier bits get sanded along the edges, really polishing off the pop sensibility in the perfect way. If this is your style, as it should be, there’s a wonderful 7″ that features this track available HERE.

Birdspotter Drop Gusty Album

I’m not going to lie, today’s going to be a weird day for me; I’m returning to my classroom to teach with students for the first time in over 7 months. So, I needed something calming to get me started this morning as I prepped mentally, which is why this new record from Philly’s Birdspotter is perfect. The entire listen is filled with these subtle little bedroom pop tunes, little pop earworms that creep into your brain and make everything else irrelevant. At times, the tunes are quiet and intimate, other times you get what I’ve chosen for you below, just the slightest uptick in energy as the guitar lines weave in and out of your speakers. Happy Monday to us all, right? The Gusty LP is available via Z Tapes!
