Bill Roe of Trouble in Mind’s 10 Most Listened to LPs

Year-end lists (or “best-of”s as most people term them) are extremely hard for me to compile. I listen to (and buy) a lot of music from day-to-day & despite my best efforts truly cannot keep up with the sheer magnitude of quality recordings coming out each year – and 2019 was a pretty fucking great year for music. So here’s my best shot at compiling a list of my “10 Most-Listened-To” albums from 2019 (plus five honorable mentions). They’re in alphabetical order to avoid any sort of ranking, because honestly ranking something as “best” or assigning a numerical rating seems antiquated & frankly diminishes great art, IMHO. (Trouble In Mind Records releases are excluded, for conflict of interest, but it’s safe to say that anything we’d be investing thousands of dollars releasing is – in our opinion – worth your time). Fresh Music from Holding Hands

We took off at the tail end of last week, but one thing I was listening to was the latest release from Montreal’s Holding Hands, Exile. First, all proceeds from the release go to the Native Women’s Shelter of Montreal, so please be sure to throw what you can spare that way. Second, I’d probably stick around this song for the chorus alone; it has that familiar feel to it, that place that in music that just makes you feel like you’ve been welcomed home. In the end, the song takes up this casual jam, illustrating the craft in the songwriting, but of course, you were already hooked by the balladry up front, eh? Keep on listening here friends.

Pleased to Meet You: Soft Shelter

Just as we’re about to wrap up a year, and apparently a decade, there’s still some new acts popping up on the horizon, like Cali’s Soft Shelter. I thought this was a great way to enter into a Monday, as the song has this gradual pop climb to make; the beat almost trickles in atop the lightly jangling guitar, setting the tone from the first few seconds. In the vocals, there’s this sort of misty haze in the way they sort of ebb and flow in between the riffs, riding out the pop vibes to a nice little close.

Moon Pics Share Fall Video

I’m sort of obsessed with Adriano Caiado’s project Moon Pics at the moment. Today he shares the fantastic black and white video that accompanies his brand new single, and while there’s some incredible work in the video, the song puts me over the moon. Drawing from the likes of My Bloody Valentine and the Radio Dept, his work blends the harsh tones with this incredible pop sensibility that seems to move in and out of focus. It ends up creating this warped brilliance that sort of intoxicates you, letting you bath in this glorious soundscape crafted by Caiado in his bedroom. This new digital single is being put out by Midsummer Madness.

Lilla Parasit Share Another Tune

I was turned onto Lilla Parasit because of my love of Melby, a Swedish outfit I’ve written about quite a bit; Are, the leader of this group is also in the aforementioned outfit. They’ve just released this new track from their forthcoming album, and I’m just sitting here bobbing my head to the steady drum beat that serves as the song’s background. In a sense, the song sort of reminds me of the propulsive pop moments that made me fall in love with Broken Social Scene; this is catchy and organic, with sort of a natural joyousness lurking in the guitar notes. Americans are always into the cool Swedish sounds, and this is about as cool as it comes; look for the band to drop a mini-LP in March of 2020 via Rama Lama Records.

New Music from Ana & Luis

Today is going to take an international bend, so why not start it out with Spanish outfit Ana & Luis, who just dropped this great new 7″ for our friends over at Meritorio Records. Imagine growing up on 60s folk music, but falling head over heels in love with indiepop; this is what must have occurred to bring us the joyous songs below. On one hand, you get this sort of lightly jangling ballad; the A side is soft and breezy, just sort of drifting through your ears in the most pleasant sense. On the B side you get a little bit more of a bounce, with this sort of wonky gallop working behind these circular jangling guitar notes; I love the subtle twists in the vocals that bubble up in this tune. If you love it, and you do, then jump right over to Meritorio Records and pick it up. Grab that new Sprinters LP while you’re at it!

Beverly Tender Stream Little Curly/boy is a Bird LP

Being in a band these days is tough, and as is the case for Rhode Island’s Beverly Tender, it’s best to call it a day when you’re peaking. While Little Curly/boy is a Bird will be their final release, they’re going out with a musical wonder. The whole record is comprised of these little sonic collages, woven together carefully to craft some oddball pop quilt. “April 17, 2018” comes across like a more demented Animal Collective, but they’ll flip that in a moment, turning into the delightfully playful “We Are the Children of the Future on Earth;’ this is just one of the many twists and turns offered throughout the LP. A rarity nowadays, but this is a collection that’s meant to be listened to as a whole; it’s not meant to be partially consumed and then discarded. Immerse yourself in the fabric of this LP and you’ll be rewarded with pop wizardry; then go grab the tape from Disposable America. We wish the band all the best in their new ventures, but you can catch them on December 6th and 7th playing with Palberta.

 

Xetas Announce The Cypher

We here at ATH have been waiting to hear what was in store when Xetas much anticipated new LP was announced. Today the whole world gets to hear the power the band brandish with the new of the Cypher. Immediately, there’s this dangerous energy with the rhythm section crafting a steady stomp while the riffs knife their way in and out of the tune. The vocal delivery is almost a call to action in the way its delivered…save for the chorus which brings in just the slightest hint of pop sensibility to the band’s sound. It all fades into a wall of crashing noise, drawing the song to a close. It’s energetic, touching on hardcore and punk, while building in some insatiable hooks; this could be the record that blows the rest of you out of the water. The Cypher drops on January 24th via 12XU.

Winter Announces New EP

Having just dropped an EP in April, I was surprised to hear that Winter had another EP in the works for early December via Bar/None Records; I was not, however, surprised by how great a first single they’ve shared. I love how Samira’s songs always toy with the boundaries of shoegaze, though never quite dropping that distortion pedal on full blast, instead harnessing the polish of pop. My favorite bit came right at the 40 second mark where her voice starts to hit higher notes, calmly hanging in the air and adding to the ethereal quality. If the Hazy EP is as great as this song, we’ll all be in for a treat; it drops on December 6th.

Another Pop Ditty from Pure Moods

Feels like just a week or so ago I was sharing a new Pure Moods tune, and here we are again with a brand new track from the forthcoming Upward Spiral. I loved the last track, but I think this one’s even better; it has everything you want in a pop song: it’s catchy, nice melody and it’s short. There’s that Australian casual attitude in the way the vocals are delivered, as if there wasn’t a care in the world. But, what I’ve been drawn to are the sharp guitar notes; they toy with being jangly, but happily make out their own path until they’re joined by this interesting textured guitar buzz meandering through. Tear Jerk Records release the full LP this Friday.
