Check Out New Music from Sob Stories

Yesterday Emotional Response dropped a bunch of new release info, like Razz and, well, Sob Stories. The group’s debut EP should be regarded as the standard in how to kick out power-pop nowadays. This short little EP is filled with huge riffs built for loud speakers, vocal hooks that tug on the heartstrings of listeners and a bit of swagger that makes you wanna be cool. I’m partial to “You’ll Only Hurt,” but pretty sure that I could stream these six songs all day long. What do you think? You dig it, order the EP from Emotional Response while supplies last!

Have a Hit from Pure Mids

From the get-go you’re tapping your toes, feeling a need to bounce. That feeling rides until the entrance of the vocals on the latest Pure Mids track; once those vocals soothingly ride the mix, the tune takes a strikingly dreamier note. It spins in your ears, whispering to let yourself go free. Twirl about my friends, get lost in music like you did when you were young. The band is currently wrapping up the finishing touches on their debut album, Optimistic-ism, which I’m hoping carries this songs shimmering vibrance, twinkling and buzzing in my ears.

Dreamy New Dead Leaf Echo

Man, this song is definitely a stunner. Clearly I’ve enjoyed previous Dead Leaf Echo tunes, as we all should, but this one really ups the ante. Usually the group surround their songs with this blossoming wall of noise, but here you find that peeled back, however slightly, to reveal a tight rhythm section and guitars that seemingly circle around the vocals. They fill in some extra textural notes via synth work and distortion as the song progresses, but I’m still grinning with the immediate charm this number offers. Their new LP, Beyond.Desire, will be released this Friday via PaperCup Music.

Jason Butler has been a hard working man; he runs rehearsal spaces, plays drums in Lo Country…and then he has his own work as Thee Conductor. At the moment, he’s prepping for the release of Cotton Toronado…featuring many of our favorite Austinites like A. Sinclar, Jana Horn and some guy named Bonnie Prince Billy (not from Austin). This new single is fairly minimal, working with light guitar strokes, horns and a little bit of keys; the video will have you scrambling to see if your computer is broken; it’s not, just sit back and enjoy the song. Look for the album to hit on October 20th, with a release show planned for Stateside at the Paramount on November 4th.

Jess Cornelius Pens Another Gem

I was always a fan of Teeth & Tongue, Jess Cornelius‘ former project. Now she’s working under her own name, and if this tune is anything to go by, then Jess will be here for quite some time. It’s both intimate and stark, yet powerful in every aspect of the performance. Chords ring out with purpose, and she walks her vocals between playful gasps and beautiful belting; you’ll be captivated from start to finish. Her debut EP, titled Nothing Is Lost, is going to be released on October 27th; grab it from Jess HERE.

Did Someone Say New Belle and Sebastian

In fact, the Internet did say there’s a new Belle and Sebastian track out there…it’s one of the tracks that will feature on the band’s release of three (3!) new EPs. The band remains one of the finest purveyors of pop music to this day and age, and to have 3 albums with their own story seems fitting…especially as they did something similar back in their early days. Just take a moment of your day, relax and enjoy this new song off of EP #2. The collection, called How to Solve Our Human Problems, will be out on February 17th via Matador Records.

Dig On Another Wireheads Tune

Not too long ago I ran a Wireheads tune that was infectious and gritty, illustrating that the cool knows know bounds in Australia. Now we’re back with a new hit from the band, though this time they take more of a arty post-rock vibe. This tune’s more like a vocal barrage with the musical accompaniment jangling in almost as an afterthought. Blasts of squalling chords jump through in the aftermath of vocal delivery, and you’ve got your ears pinned back waiting for what’s next. What’s next? The band release Lightning Ears on October 20th via Tenth Court.

Stream Verandan’s New EP

If you do choose to follow these pages, then you’ve likely seen Verandan pop up rather frequently the last few months. It’s important to note, especially for me, that this is the latest project from Ville Hopponen of Cats on Fire fame (a personal fave). Through six times you’ll find yourself enamored with the casual pop vibes, though be sure to pay close attention to the fragility that seems to lurk on tracks like “Inland Sea.” You’ll also be able to find your own personal escape on “Follow the Money,” or turn up the energy with the indifferently upbeat “A Pleasant View.” The self-titled EP just came out over in Finland via our faves Soliti.

Adults Join Art Is Hard Singles Series

You knew I’d be posting about this, even if you saw the track pop over the weekend, as I’m an avid supporter of Art Is Hard Records…particularly their Singles Series. Perhaps my adoration comes because they always introduce me to new acts from overseas that probably don’t get much press on my side of the pond. Adults have this youthful vibrancy, but also this distorted punch…similar in my mind to the sweeter moments of Joanna Gruesome or perhaps early Los Campesinos. Regardless, you throw a hook in with some male/female vocal trading and I’m hooked. Check this new jam for sure.

Hear a Brand New Track from Oh Well Goodbye

The last time we heard from Oh Well, Goodbye, they were releasing the very excellent Swoon 7″, and we’re really excited to share this new number with you. This song will feature on the group’s new EP, Affinity Part One. For me, the best thing about this new single is how deep the band delves into a beautiful darkness…there’s plenty of space hanging about, draped with unobtrusive bits of guitar and a bass line that guarantees tension. There’s just this enormous bit of space, and Phillip Rourke is there to fill it in with his voice, somewhat resembling Paul Banks. I love how things are just left open, left to your interpretation and your involvement. The new EP will be released by EDILS and Bleeding Gold on November 3rd, so you have time to acquaint yourself!
