Sublime Ballad from Kevin Scoma

We’ve got our toes dipping into the Fall season down here in Austin, so musical changes happen as walks grow longer and days grow shorter. One of the first songs that’s set me in the right mood is this new track from Kevin Scoma, the second single from his forthcoming Into the Weeping Sea EP. From the get-go, the song is pulling at your heartstrings, with Scoma’s softened voice really starring over the lightly strummed guitar/banjo lines. There’s tinkering electronics that provide that dreamy element to the song, giving into that magical feel of changing colors in the world. If you’re willing to get lost in a nice gentle ballad, look no further, and keep your ears back for that EP next Friday.

New Ditty from Joel Jerome

Joel Jerome first came to my attention long ago as one part of Dios, but like many things musical, I lost track of him, only to discover his work again recently as part of Dangerbird’s Microdose Series. The opening moments definitely feel like they look brightly upon Joel’s home of LA; there’s this natural sunshine coming through in the way he plays his guitar. There’s also some nostalgia, with some of his licks sounding a lot like Holly or Valens (to me anyways). About midway through the tune, Joel switches gears, slowing things way down, letting that guitar take on more emotion so as to match up with the vocals; it ends up being this slow burn out that beautifully wraps the track up.

Lost Film Announce New Album

It’s been a few years since we’ve heard from Jimmy Hewitt’s project, Lost Film, but I’m pretty sure any indiepop fan will find the tune quite worth the wait. Within seconds the guitar begins to sharply jangle its way into the track, followed in rather quick succession by Hewitt’s soft-spoken vocals. Combined together with fairly minimal percussion you get this dream pop vibe that manages to work just atop this energetic bounce; I love the middling instrumental exploration, giving some air to let the song soar. Zero Summer is the title of the new album, and it’s already worth every penny!

Pop Jam from Tino Drima

The latest hit from Tino Drima is the perfect pop tune, rising up and down with melodies, spinning you in circles, and joining you to shout at the heavens. “Doctor” opens up on a playful piano backbone, twirling you about as the ivories are tickled and giving the song an emphatic stomp that’s joyous as can be. Suddenly, at the 1:40 mark, your offered up this operatic belting, like a haunting howl of harmony that seeps into your skin building towards the shouted coda that wraps up the song’s musical plot. Up and down, down and up, this track has it all, leading one to believe that Suitin’ Up, their new EP will have it all; it drops on October 11th via Park the Van.

Das Kope Shares New Tune

Always enjoy a good Das Kope tune. The Brazilian-born, LA-based artist has this way of flirting with dream pop under a funkier electronic guise, which helps me maintain my hipster cool while still dipping my toe in the electronic pond. This one’s no different, bringing that sort of coolly washed beach vibe into play, while still driving home this heavy beat that really grooves; I’m pretty sure its the perfect jam to open up on a Monday morning. There’s been promise of a full album worth of tunes before the 2019 year is up, though still no word on that as of yet, but in the meantime, I’m pretty sure you can start your day here.

Hook Laden Guitar Pop from Olivia’s World

Back in January we were introduced to Olivia’s World via the tune “Cereal Boxes;” it was the first I had heard of the project, though their drummer seemed a familiar name. Finally we get news that Olivia’s World EP is on its way! There’s another tune for you to devour too, which is the EP’s opening number; it’s a tune heavily reliant upon the rhythm section, with both bass and drums getting you tapping those little toes. The guitars have this light distorted jangle keeping the energy going, which seems fair as lead songwriter Alice Rezende happens to call Australia home. The Olivia’s World EP will be out October 25th via Lost Sound Tapes. Happy Friday.

The Shivas Are Back with Dark Thoughts

We’ve always been avid supporters of The Shivas throughout the years, so when news comes our way about a new record, you better bet we’re going to be on board. Dark Thoughts is said to be an album of deep reflection, and the latest single was penned by drummer Kristin Leonard, sharing her story of coming to grips with the various aspects that make up her identity (including asshole TMs); she also happens to be the star of this here video. For me, I love how my world’s collide. I’ve been listening to a lot of doc-wop from the 50s/60s as of late, and there’s definitely a nostalgic bent in this song’s sound, though it’s funneled through the very modern production lens. The band have always had that, which is one of the reasons we’ve always found them endearing here at ATH. Dark Thoughts drops on October 25th via Tender Loving Empire.

Still Digging Beautiful Dudes

Not too long ago, I was all over the first single from Beautiful Dudes new record, Radio. It just reminded me of simple no frills rock n’ roll; I mean that in the best sense. There’s no pretense in what the group offers on their second single either; the natural bravado and swagger seem to come from the internal melodies of the song itself; it’s a windows down, hair in the wind rock affair you’ll soon have stuck in your head. Plus, they flex some guitar solo muscle here too, giving a nice little layer of energy crashing on the listener’s head. Radio is out on November 8th from Mama Bird Recording Co.

Crunchy Guitar Pop from Joy Cleaner

I know that somewhere out there is a huge group of folks clamoring for someone to give them the gift of glorious guitar pop along the lines of the Teenage Fanclub…look no further friends because here’s brand new Joy Cleaner. This brand new ditty comes across with these huge crunching guitars, bordering on speaker-breaking. But, that quickly subsides, bringing in the melodic pop side of things that made acts like TFC so special; it gives the listener this great cocoon of warmth while still feeling like the track’s got something heavy going on throughout. Call it college radio, call it alternative, but you’re going to call it good because plain and simple, it very much is. Look for the new You’re So Jaded LP from Jigsaw Records very soon!

United Waters Share Track from Coma to Coma

It’s great stumbling into your morning and realizing that you’ve got a new band to take you down a wormhole, as is the case with United Waters after the announcement of their 4th LP, Coma to Coma. For starters, I love this song, so where was I on LPs 1-3? Secondly, listen to this damn song! It has this woozy dream pop vibe going on, which I think ties it immediately to this modern period of darkly tinged bedroom pop stylings. But, the song has this slow burning post-punk vocal delivery; I keep imagining it as Jim Reid’s spirit finding a new host. Slight uptick just before the 2 minute mark is there, you just gotta give it a close ear. Coma to Coma will be out on Drawing Room Records on November 8th.
