Das Kope Shares Tiger

I’ve been covering Das Kope for a hot minute, and he quietly dropped another tune online while we were hustling out at SXSW. While there’s that same dreamy wash over synth beats, it’s restrained for the first 45 seconds; once that volume jumps up you can hear comparisons to other pop constructionists like Washed Out. I do love how his voice is recorded as a whisper throughout, drawing the listener into the track, which can then turn jarring when the volume blasts…it’s a nice little switch. Feel like Das Kope is once again on the right track, so listen to see if you’re on my side here.

The Ballet Announce New Album

Maybe this is the year that The Ballet jumps onto everyone’s radar, and if not, I’ll at least be here to cover their latest release, Matchy Matchy. It’s the duo’s newest album, and their are obvious comparisons to the likes of Jens Lekman or Magnetic Fields, especially in the literary wit that comes with the songwriting…maybe even the self-deprecation of Stephin Merritt. There’s a little bit of kitsch to this track, which, in my opinion, means that everyone will find a piece of this track to latch onto, whether that be in the instrumentation or the song’s subject matter. Matchy Matchy will hit on May 17th via Fika Recordings.

Selvatica Drop New Album

Over the last several years I’ve turned to Discos de Kirlian and Pretty Olivia Records for a look into the world of Spanish indie rock. Today I’m here with a new track from Selvatica who just dropped Macumba via Discos de Kirlian. There’s this natural tension that exists during the verses, the guitar working over strings carefully before the distortion gets turned up. Each time the guitars blast and recede, I’m disoriented in the best way possible; it all ends in a euphoric burst that crests and crashes through your speakers. Tired of monolingual indie rock? Then turn this one up loud. Macumba is out now!

Lust for Youth Announce New Record

Long time fans of Lust for Youth might shudder at the thought, but it seems like the band have completely embraced their pop sensibility for their new self-titled LP. Our first listen has this pulsing brightness, breaking through the cavernous darkness usually present in the group’s tracks; the production seems a little bit more lush, with vocal turns that charm like at 1.30 mark when the line “it hurts my eyes to see you walking by yourself.” That seems to be the theme here, a brighter sonic future, but still holding onto a grim disposition in regards to the world’s state of affairs, both personal and global. Sacred Bones will be releasing this self-titled LP on June 7th.

Red Channel Announce 7″ EP

I love when you try to pigeonhole a band, then you find yourself completely caught off-guard by something else going on in the track. This track from Red Channel did just that, as I thought it was this pleasantly plodding pop number, wonky at parts, and definitely infectious. Then the song sort of twists, offers up a post-punk yelp, then jumps about to illustrate the band’s ability to maneuver within tight spaces, mixing in just a hint of art-pop into the groove; this leaves plenty of room for growth and experimenting in the future. Excited to hear the rest of this new 7″, dropping via Upset the Rhythm on April 19th.

Mammoth Penguins Share New Single

My Mammoth Penguins fandom knows no bounds, but that’s only emboldened when the group unleash great tracks. They’ve slimmed back down to a three piece after releasing the ambitious John Doe LP; this seems to have given them this boundless energy that bleeds through your speakers. Emma definitely has a spectacular vocal performance on this new number; her voice is given lots of space to soar atop the instrumentation, driving home the lyrical content. And, as much credit as I want to give Kupa here, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention how spot on the rhythm section is on this track; the drumming alone is standout work…driving the track forward. There’s No Fight We Can’t Both Win will be out April 26th via Fika Recordings.

Fresh Indiepop from Bubblegum Lemonade

Dear Laz,
I just wanted you to know how happy I am that you and Bubblegum Lemonade are back with new music; I feel like it’s been a few years since we last spent time together. There’s something so timeless about the way you construct your songs that inevitably leaves them stuck in my brain. On first listen, people might overlook the way you add in these textured vocal harmonies for emphasis in “Our Mother’s House;” it’s so light that one might barely notice if they’re staring out the window nostalgically…as many of your fans are likely to do. I’m so excited that Desperately Seeking Sunshine is right around the corner (via Matinee Recordings), but I’m even more thankful that you tossed in some exclusive B-sides on this EP. Anyways, just wanted to reach out and tell you I love your work.

New Music from Marble Arch

I remember when all my friends were raving about Nirvana, I was sitting at home raving to my sister about Republic by New Order. Somehow, the music of French outfit Marble Arch always reminds me of that tape, especially their new single. The entire first minute is filled with this propulsive post-punk, wrapping guitar chords angularly around one another as the listener becomes intoxicated by the sound. Once there, the band operates back and forth between the energetic pop and the dreamy state of the vocals, keeping you forever unbalance in the most loving way possible. For real, if New Order had a child, then this band is it; hear for yourself when Children of the Slump drops Friday via Geographie.

Dentist Share New Video

Late last summer, New Jersey outfit Dentist released Night Swimming via Cleopatra Records. We gave the album and its singles solid praise when it dropped, and we were super fortunate to have the band play our ATH Day Party this week at SXSW. Now, the band have a brand new video for standout single “Alone in the Garden.” The video’s mostly a performance video, shot in various ways with fun little elements thrown into the mix; the song is a blistering bit of power pop, with just the right hint of dreaminess thrown in for good measure. The album is available to buy directly from the band HERE, or you can grab it from Cleopatra.

And…if you’re in Austin right now, they’ve got a show at 2 PM at Side Bar, and at 6 PM over at Hard Luck Lounge!
