Even More Stella Donnelly

I’ve pretty much been riding high on the Stella Donnelly train since her performances at last year’s SXSW festival. Luckily, her Beware the Dogs LP isn’t too far off in the distance, so why not celebrate with another gem. This number has a little bit more spirit in the way the guitars cut across the tune; her voice still sparkles, no matter whether she’s delivering lines or drawing out the chorus. I think ultimately, her delivery of everything’s quite smart; she seems to have this sly wit and playfulness that draws in listeners and begs them to be better humans…it’s a theme throughout the LP, in my opinion. Secretly Canadian will release the album on March 8th.

New Track from Justus Proffit

I’m hoping that Justus Proffit has a breakout year, as I think his music can go in various directions; he ties in all these various influences, wearing them openly in his tracks. My ears hear a mixture of GVB in this track, especially in the main verses of the song. The chorus does offer a glance at Proffit’s ability to turn up the noise level and just unleash his sound on the listener; it all comes across weirdly balanced. There’s still that intimacy in his voice that we heard on “Hole,” which likened him to E. Smith, but here comes something a touch different for ya. LA’s Got Me Down drops on March 8th via Bar None Records.

Star Tropics Share Indiepop Gem

I feel like it’s been a slow year for indiepop fans. We had that Fanclub EP, and the Business of Dreams LP, but I pray that the newest single from Star Tropics means we’ll get another LP from them real soon. It’s been a few years since Lost World, so that only seems fitting…and if the whole thing is as good as this single I’ll probably cry. It employs a lot of the genre staples, those guitars that blend dream and jangling, dancing and maneuvering in the mix. Oh, and then they go throw that female/male vocal juxtaposition at me? Yea, just a slight swoon, no big deal. I like how the wash of keyboards opens up the space too, letting the song ride out into the horizon. Made my day.

King Warbler Share All Week

Admittedly, I’m a fan of good old pop rock songs, especially when they’re spun through the indie rock lens. Perhaps that’s why I’ve gravitated towards King Warbler, a band you might want to have on your radar. Their latest single has this building tension, growing noisier as guitars battle with one another for the listener’s attention. I love how the speed of the vocal delivery picks up with the band’s volume; it’s like we’re all running out of time and want to cram as much fun into that perfect moment. Sounds a lot like ATH faves Marmalakes, or maybe War on Drugs before they became Bruce Springsteen’s shittier backing band. Tune in, and turn up.

Jackie Mendoza Announces Debut EP

Usually, I don’t like to hype on whatever the big blogs are hyping on, but I’m already a huge fan of Jackie Mendoza, so I might as well continue that streak. For years I’ve been jamming out to Gingerlys, the band she fronted for some time, which was adored by indiepop nerds all over. Interestingly, while her solo work definitely feels like her, it’s great to see how expansive her sound has gotten. Samples create this ethereal world where her vocals walk like ghosts through gurgling bleeps and bloops, which seems exactly the vibe they chose for the video here. LuvHZ EP will drop on April 26th via Luminelle. You can also jump back to last week and check out Jackie’s responses to our SXSW questionnaire HERE. Hopefully I can run into her at the festival and discuss her reggaeton appreciation.

Another Hit from La Fille

It’s weird about how some sounds seem so cyclical, like this new track from La Fille. It’s a big swooning pop number from the outfit, but I can’t help but recall the cheesy movies from the 90s that would somehow include a great soundtrack. I can picture this track fitting perfectly in that scenario, possibly when our protagonist finds themselves isolated, or all up in their feelings. Maybe it’s the nostalgia of it all, or maybe it’s just a really great song that captures your ear; I think maybe it’s both. Whatever the case, my ears are ready to hear Alright Already, dropping March 15th.

New Me Share Three Channels Apart

You ever press play on a song and find yourself swept away in the next few minutes? That’s precisely what happened when I clicked on this new single from San Diego’s New Me, so I figured you needed the same vibe in your day. It slinks in with this bubbling synth line, and the dreamier wash definitely had my interest. But, it wasn’t until I heard the vocals from Barnabuss Chump that really sucked me in; there’s this ability to take his voice from the highest pitch, then drop it and spin it in this deeper warmth. Man, I’m hooked on this tune. It’s been a hot minute since their debut 7″, so let’s hope this means more new tunes in the very near future.

Club Pop from Cat Princess

I’m a sucker for a catchy number, particularly if I can imagine myself dancing about amidst a group of friends in some dingy club. Sweden’s Cat Princess are giving me that vibe this morning, throwing slight jangles with just a hint of warmth beneath them; combine that with the percussive element and you have that natural need for a nice dance floor stomp. In the vocals there’s this sense of cool indifference, just sort of bouncing atop the mix to be sure you have something to lock onto when the song ends. The band will be releasing Forbidden Items in May via Rama Lama Records.
