Surf Rock Is Dead Ready Their Debut

Surf Rock is Dead have made appearance on our pages before, but what better reason to bring up the band than to share a new track from the band’s forthcoming LP. Like earlier tunes, the group has a knack for building in these hooks that wrap themselves around your ears again and again. At times, the track has this great bounce to it, like early stuff from the Drums, but other times, the duo (now three-o) just build in these pop rock anthemic moments that dwell in the region of new dream pop stylings, accented by sharp guitar notes. No release date as of yet, but we’ll keep you posted, as I’m sure we’ll be talking about these guys quite a bit.

The Treasures of Mexico Are Back

After wandering for separately for a few years, Mark and Bob of The Dentists fame joined together once more to form The Treasures of Mexico, releasing their debut Holding Pattern in 2015. Since then, we’ve been teased with the insatiable “Super Cute,” but now we have a new single…and an album announcement! Everything Sparks Joy will be released on October 5th via Shelflife, and you can have another track to whet your appetite below. Almost immediately, the song has a natural bounce; the drums seem to hop through the speakers, grabbing you in your arms and hopping up and down. Once the vocals enter calmly, things seemingly settle, though the cascading chorus guitar definitely drives home a heavier punch. As the song bounds, you’d be quite pleased to just appreciate the offering, but the band have other ideas, as they add a nice female accompanying vocal just before the 3 minute mark to build in an added sense of charm. Linen Closet Drop New Single

I always like the collective vibe; a bunch of different minds working to flesh out something unique together. This seems to be the story of Adam Hilton, who has rounded out his lineup, both live and in the studio, with some of our favorite musicians to bring his Linen Closet to life. Yesterday, the band dropped the lead single, and it’s quite remarkable, if you ask me. Hilton has these fragile vocals that sound a bit like early Wolf Parade, almost as if they could break apart at the fall of each syllable. The precision drumming helps keep the pace, allowing for some meandering through experimentalism by the rest of the band. I love the artful ring throughout the track, reminiscent of some Dirty Projectors vibes. All things point towards a collective piece of brilliant indie rock, but you’ll have to wait until October 19th to hear the band’s self-titled album for yourself.

Explorative Pop from Cyanide Thornton

I can always count on Bedroom Suck Records to keep me in the know when it comes to the Aussie music scene (among other labels of course). What I’ve grown to appreciate about the label, and come to think of it, most of the Australian labels is that they don’t seem too intent on always operating with the same musical styles. Take this brand new Cyanide Thornton tune that they just released; it spends almost two minutes exploring various sonic textures, building you a world where its safe for the lyrics to come into play. Once Sienna enters the fray, she controls the listener with ups and down in pitch, smoothed out notes follow. Musically, the landscape of the track has these folk motifs, but the latter half has the faintest hint of post-punk laying in wait. The self-titled album will drop on November 9th.

Wildhoney Drop Gorgeous New Tune

The only thing I want to get off my chest is that not enough people are listening to Wildhoney! Today, the band shared a new single from the Slumberland Subscription Series over on NPR, which hopefully garners more deserved attention. Let’s get to that song though. It begins with a light ringing guitar, politely dancing through the speakers; it establishes the perfect setting for Lauren to enter with voice in tow. I love how her voice seems to sparkle in step with the crisp guitar notes. Then comes the rising joyousness of the momentary chorus. But, most importantly, we should take notice that the song’s crafted in various stages. The blissful openings soon makes way for a fuzzed out explosion, only to settle into this cascading atmospheric moment that wraps the song up in a warm blanket. Seriously. Go listen to more Wildhoney. And join the Slumberland Subscription!

Introducing Indigo Bunting

Those of you following this site the last decade or so might already know a few of the fellas in Indigo Bunting, as they were active members of ATH faves, Tiger Waves. Today, the new project drops two new tunes to introduce themselves to the masses…and what promise these two songs give us! “Little Moonwheel” is a light-hearted folk style pop song; I’m quite impressed with the lush arrangements on the song…these guys have always had great care in the details of their songs. “Pull Trap” is more of a psychedelic pop adventure from outer space; I kind of see it as a grandchild of the more curious Elephant 6 acts. Two songs with two similar, yet diverse tastes…promising news from the Indigo Bunting camp. You can grab the tracks for NYP at Bandcamp.

Rostam Delivers New Tune

It’s been just over a year since Rostam released Half-Light, and even longer since that gem of an album he did with our boy Hambone…and it looks like he’s finally starting to move forward with new music. His brand new single has him building the song, much as one expect an artist to do over time. He opens with mandolin, letting that ride for a minute before bringing in his voice…it’s then that the lush orchestration begins to take hold as a pulsing drum rhythmically beats beneath the surface. Tension builds by way of violins, though he keeps his voice gentle throughout the entirety of the changes. For a musician trying to find that balance between indie rock and electronica…it’s been a good run for Rostam thus far.

Chorusgirl Prep New LP

Chorusgirl needn’t do too much to persuade me to come back for repeated listens, but the band have unleashed a brilliant pop tune this week to announce their new album. It jumps off almost like a brooding bit of jangle, before settling into a calming bounce to reinforce the vocals. Suddenly, guitar lines get sharper and the percussion is tight as can be, giving way to a catchy bounce that’s hard to ignore. The band even play upon that hook as the vocals move forward, giving into the vibes of classic girl group harmonies. The band will released Shimmer and Spin to rave reviews on November 16th.

Catching Up with Discos de Kirlian

As a fan of the indiepop genre, I try my best to always browse the web searching for things to share…which led me to Discos de Kirlian, long ago. Today the label just quietly dropped two new releases in our lap, and why not visit some of the best in Spanish indiepop. The first bit comes from Senalada, finding that perfect middle ground between twee and electronica; I love the acoustic guitar at work here. On the other side we have this charming ditty from Cosmo K.; it’s brevity helps you sink your teeth in immediately, then return to lap up all the joy all over again. LoFi Pop from Blades of Joy

This Blades of Joy gem has been bouncing around the Internet for a wee bit, but I was out having one of those baby things, so forgive me for not being on the up and up. That being said, this is one of the songs I rushed to get up upon my return. You might be able to toss the group into any number of categories, but most importantly, you’ll keep coming back to celebrate how great the music is. There’s a noticeable indifference in the guitar work, and yet the vocals have this warmth that could soothe any listener. There’s this timelessness to it, wherein it could fit into any musical decade and make an impact. If you listen to any one song today, make this the one. The band’s self-titled LP will drop on September 21st via Melters.
