Still More from Still Corners

I can’t get enough of the latest record from Still Corners, dropping this Friday via Wrecking Light. This song was one of the standouts for me for the last few weeks, before it dropped yesterday as a new single. While it still hangs its hat on the smoky dream pop qualities the duo has offered us, there’s seemingly an influence of the band’s Texas relocation lurking through. You can hear it in the opening guitar lament, as well as in the song’s way way back as those same lines permeate the front of the mix. Another mesmerizing number with subtle Texas tones? Yea…I’m in; be sure to grab Slow Air this Friday in stores!

All About Parrot Dream

I feel like the best thing I can do for you is to continue to encourage you to spend some time with Brooklyn-via-Chile act, Parrot Dream. This track is definitely on the pop-centric side of things; I think it will definitely draw comparisons, in some of the guitar sound to Beach House. It begins with this fuzzy keyboard intro, before Christina allows her voice to sparkle in the front of the mix. There’s this momentary respite at the 2 minute mark, offering just enough space for a slowed-down vocal performance that’s matched by some emphatic drum work. Light Goes will drop on August 24th via Good Eye Records, and you’ll be glad it did!

Chilled Pop Track from Henry Nowhere

We’ve already toasted to Henry Nowhere when he first announced his latest EP, but he’s followed up that announcement with this brilliant late night chill out. A driving guitar line propels the song throughout, occasionally balancing on the edge of jangling. It all works over a simple rhythm line, giving Henry plenty of room to drape his smoky baritone atop the entire mix. For my two cents, I love how it walks the fine line between uplifting spirit and late night relaxer…makes it easy to adore no matter the time of day. This is definitely promising for fans with the EP on the horizon.

Try Another Terry Tune Wont You

It looks like the folks over at Upset the Rhythm can’t wait to have you hear the new LP from Terry, as they’re offering up the third single from the group’s I’m Terry. The first two and a half minutes of the band’s latest should definitely have you captivated; it walks a fine line between happy bounding and plodding bounce, steady from start to finish. They offer up some sonic respite, but at this point, its fleeting as the group jump back into their harmony-induced meat of the track. You’ll find the latter half of the tune offering musicianship and sonic playfulness…just the band showing their musical chops. The new LP drops on August 31st.

Mountain Movers Prep Pink Skies

Pretty sure I’m in trouble financially, as it looks like I’ll have to stump out more money for Trouble in Mind Records as they announce a new LP from Mountain Movers (I’m ready for the TiM LP Subscription Series). Anyways, the Connecticut outfit brandish a psychedelia like no other; it’s a mindfuck of noise rock, filled with screeching guitars and stalking rhythm work. When the vocals enter the picture it’s easy to find yourself lost in some noise-induced trance, unable to find an escape, should you need one. They close it all out with a brash display of noisy musicianship, further seducing your ears and mind…you’re never getting out. But, should you come out safely on the other side, look for Pink Skies to drop on October 5th.

Upbeat Number from Jack Drag

You know, some days you just want to sit back and enjoy a great pop song; you don’t have to participate; you can just sit back and let the melody catch you up; this new Jack Drag single is one such track. Aside from the first 30 seconds of space beats, this song starts off like Jack’s channeling an acoustic version of Jay Reatard; the pace and the chords are definitely reminiscent of Jay. But, the chorus takes that pop sensibility and ups it a notch, matching the vocal melodies that come from Dragonetti as he works his way through the song. I just keep tapping my toes and smiling. And, while it might not be a huge piece of the track, I love the keyboard/bells at the end of the tune is a nice touch. His new album drops on September 14th via Burger Records.

Another Track from Hypoluxo

Brooklyn outfit Hypoluxo have already caught my fancy with their earlier single “Kentucky Smooth,” and I’m quite fascinated by their newest number. I thought I had this one pegged for the first minute, with a slightly dreamy guitar line hanging out there…not quite dream pop, not quite Mac Demarco. Then the vocals threw me off; there’s something in the hearty tones that give off a different vibe, and as such, the guitar takes on a different attitude…something darker, forbidden almost. I like how even in sections where they go verse chorus verse chorus, it never once takes on monotony. Look for the group’s new LP, Running on a Fence to drop September 21st via Broken Circles.

New Video from Moonlover

I wrote about Moonlover earlier this year as Quang Dinh was readying his album, Thou Shall Be Free…and now I wanted to share this video for the album’s “Wedding Day.” At times, it feels as if you’re approaching some beach front property in an arid climate, but the solemnity in Dinh’s voice also seems to lend itself to heartache…operating on the dynamic between dark and light. The video offers that same contrast, with black images moving upon lighter backgrounds. If the song piques your interest, then be sure to go grab the album HERE.

Powerful Ballad from Vera Sola

While Vera Sola is just now preparing her debut solo effort, she’s been working in the industry as part of Elvis Perkins’ band for some time. Perhaps that explains why her first single sounds so accomplished; it wears years of musicianship in its fabric. Her voice has this quality that seems to suspend her notes in mid air, with various instruments delicately layered behind…from slow-tempo drums to forlorn strings. It’s a pretty enchanting number, from start to finish…again, remarkable considering this is her first solo outing. Look for her debut, Shades, to drop in November of this year.

 

David Nance Group Announces New LP

Well, it’s that time again, with David Nance announcing another release, this time under the moniker David Nance Group; this time it will be handled by the esteemed Trouble in Mind Records. Our first listen to the record gives us this fuzzy roots-rock riffage, the heavier sort that almost makes you stomp your feet and shake out your long shaggy hair. Nance slings his emphatic voice with an aura of indifference, haphazardly sliding in harmonies where he sees fit. You ever get one of those songs that just makes you feel? Yeah, this is one of those such tunes. Look for Peaced and Slightly Pulverized to drop October 5th, with a slew of tour dates throughout the Fall.
