Upbeat Number from Eels

Yep, you read that right. This new single from Eels, one of my favorite acts is definitely an upbeat number, though Mark’s voice still has that distinct churn. The guitar sound here seems to harken to a sunnier side of the songwriter’s catalog, and the added arrangements provide an extra bit of spirit. On the subject matter, it seems Everett is in a reflective mood, promising that “today is the day;” there’s no looking back anymore. Really looking forward to hearing the entirety of The Deconstruction; it drops on April 6th.

Poppy Tune from Kidsmoke

From the instant I pressed play on the new Kidsmoke track, the guitars had won; I had given myself completely to the latest single from the Welsh act. However, while still holding my attention, the cascading guitars were stripped back in lieu of a calming vocal verse. Admittedly, I didn’t expect the high notes to be hit so pristinely, which, when combined with the careful guitar chords that follow later mesmerize listeners; it sort of ends up feeling like a young Teenage Fanclub tune, and you know that will never fail with me.

New Track from Famous Problems

My only real experience as a fan of Famous Problems is an earlier single they released last year on WIAIWYA. And, it looks like less than a year later, they’ve completed a delightful mini-album for our consumption. It opens in boisterous fashion…crashing drums and ringing guitars. Immediately after it settles into an off-kilter powerpop bounce; the lyrics are just on the edge of being spoken word, but something in the way the notes are rounded off gives the impression of crooning atop this hit. It sounds like classic rock n’ roll by a group that just wants you to fall in love; look for the Hey! It’s Raining mini album in April via the aforementioned WIAIWYA.

Brand New Music from Air Waves

I’ve been a huge supporter of Air Waves, and was really excited when Nicole Schneit returned to the work with Parting Glances (2015). Today she’s announced her brand new effort, Warrior, which will be released April 6th via Western Vinyl. The record is said to employ the concept “warrior” in various fashions, whether that be her mother fighting cancer or a queer person struggling in the present political climate. Musically, it’s a pretty stripped down song, at least on the surface; has some quieted percussion and backing vocals supporting Nicole’s remarkable voice in the front. Honestly, it has a bit of Beach House to it, only with a little more clarity coming through. Another welcome tune to her catalog…be sure to grab the LP come April.

 

Stream Poised to Flourish from Tres Oui

You know we’re going to back up our friends in Tres Oui, especially since I’m completely in love with the album. We’ve already shared tracks “Seance” and “Red Wine and Dry Ice,” which have gone over well with the masses, but there’s even more to be served up on Poised to Flourish. A few months ago, I was talking to Nate from the band about my favorite track; I told him it was “Song 4 U,” but have since changed to “Shy.” You see, that’s the great thing about this LP; there really isn’t a single bad song on it. Autobahn Release New Single

Autobahn got a lot of deserved success last year with the release of The Moral Crossing, and they’re already following it up with a brand new single. This tune caught me because of the 80s trickling synth lines that soon moved into sort of a slow drone. It definitely begins to take a dark edge, but suddenly guitars ring out brightly and then shift the mood upwards. The song pulses and turns, yet somehow manages to leave you in the same place you began. Another promising outing from the band, hinting at more great things to come our way as they pull more songs together.

Premiere: Pete Astor Shares Title Track from One for the Ghost

Having vaguely known about Pete Astor through The Loft, it wasn’t until the 2016 release of Spilt Milk that I fully delved into his music. From that point on I’ve grabbed all the old stuff, but I’m really excited for his new LP, One for the Ghost. Today we’re sharing the title track from said album, envisioning you all rushing to your computers to figure out who is the man behind these charming songs. Not sure where you fit Astor’s musical stylings of late…somewhere between the popularized jangle and the grit of casual guitar pop; it’s almost as if this is troubadour-esque…but with a little bit more poetic punch in the lyrical content. Press play, be charmed and grab the new LP from Tapete Records on February 16th.

 

Enjoy This New Dusted Tune

While Brian Borcherdt is probably best known as part of Holy Fuck, I’m really excited for the release of his new side project, Dusted. This song had me from the get-go, utilizing a steady percussive stomp, almost a march to keep the pace. Guitars ring out in the thick of the mix with little flourishes of keys and what nots rounding out the tune. Seemingly simple, its brevity keeps you from finding yourself bored…and interestingly, the tune closes with the same lyrical line “there’s no ledge to coax you from.” Blackout Summer is the new LP, dropping April 6th via Polyvinyl.

People Are Finally Catching on to Say Sue Me

It’s taken some time for the sounds of Say Sue Me to catch on in the United States, though we’ve been fans for some time. The Korean indiepoppers employ the same charming bounce that I’m a huge fan of…and I compared them to crafting the same hook-laden gems akin to Alvvays; I dare not shy away from that comparison now, as they seem to really drive home that similarity on this number. There’s jangling guitars, steady-as-needed drumming and the right pulsing throb from the bassline…think of New Order having a whole lot more fun. Can’t say enough good things about the band, but be sure to check out all the hidden treasures in their back catalog…I suggest “Good for Some Reason.”

Brand New Songs for Walter

My fascination with Songs for Walter goes back to the early singles released via Bleeding Gold Records; there was this solemn depth to the songs, accompanied by similar imagery. This round, however, he seems to still tackle isolating emotions, like the daily grind and accompanying fears, but the music is a tad bit more upbeat than what we’re used to from Laurie. Perhaps this is a new direction, or maybe the song’s meant to show light to the downtrodden working classes. Regardless, another great single from one of my favorite songwriters.
