Stellar Track from Flowertruck

The best thing you can do as a music fan is surround yourself with trustworthy music friends…those who will lead you to new acts. That’s how Flowertruck came upon my radar, and I’m really enjoying their latest single. It’s tough to determine precise influences, but I hear little bits of Byrne or Orange Juice, presented in a casual atmosphere that will make pop fans swoon. It’s the perfect intoxicating slow jam, best meant for holding the ones you love close as you twirl about. This track is slated to appear on the band’s Mostly Sunny LP, which drops on March 16th.

Another Wonderful Indiepop Tune from A Certain Smile

Not too long ago we shared “Mexican Coke,” which was a nod to everything we love about the greater genre of indiepop. A Certain Smile are back again with this bouncing number that faintly resembles our local favorites and friends, Tres Oui, though this tune has just a hint more dreaminess. That comes across in the way the vocals are delivered, wispy and light, just hanging out there in the air. The band is just around the corner from releasing their new LP Fits and Starts, which is shaping up to be filled with catchy ditty after ditty; it drops on March 9th.

Hurry Really Hit the Mark

Having previously posted Hurry tunes in the past month, I just can’t get enough of the group, especially with their latest single. There’s still an element that’s playfully soft, but the guitars on this ring brightly through your speakers in all the best ways. It’s got a rushed pace, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge that I hear bits of Nada Surf in the band’s approach…you know, offering the more radio-friendly version of Superchunk. Their new album Every Little Thought just puts a smile to your face, guaranteed; it will drop on February 23rd via Lame O Records.

Another Track from Malena Zavala

A few months back I got a tune from Malena Zavala; I was taken aback, as it sounded familiar yet somehow different from like-minded artists. Malena has this incredible vocal power, drawing you in with a warm playfulness akin to Tracyanne Campbell, but then she’ll turn you on your head by belting out a few notes on the higher end of the voice spectrum. Plus, her ties to Latin vibes keep things interesting, giving a relaxed vibe to almost every note she spins. This track comes with the announcement that she’s gotten her debut Aliso ready for the masses; it drops on April 13th via Yucatan Records.

Stream Night Unfold EP from Paul Bergmann

By now you’re well aware of my appreciation for Paul Bergmann; he’s expanded his sound, seemingly drawing from a darker place on his Night, Unfold EP. Listening to the EP’s opening tune, he almost has an operatic tone akin to early Patrick Wolf, draped carefully over a piano. It’s followed by “There’s Love (In almost everything),” which is still one of my favorite tracks of this year; you should listen to it at least once a day. And that’s just to start…you get to journey through these songs feeling like you’ve delved deeper into the soul of Paul, and you come out the better for it.

Fuzzy Fun Rocker from Death by Unga Bunga

The name Death by Unga Bunga never gets old, and neither do their tunes. They’ve been walking the fine line between power-pop and punk, crossing the road back and forth with every release. Their new single comes with more of an arena-friendly pop rock vibe, employing sharp stuttering guitars with little slices of solos bursting through the mix. You’ll find the fuzzy hook-laden chorus something worthy of blasting loud so all your neighbors can here. Plus, even better news is that the group have a new LP on the way titled So Far So Good So Cool, which is slated for release on April 6th via Jansen Records.

Did You Hear the New Dryspell Tune

In just over a month, we’ll get to hear the More EP from Austin’s Dryspell, and the releases is definitely high upon our radar as they slowly let singles trickle out. This new tune is a chilled out guitar journey, with crisp guitar lines working against a more soulful vibe on the other side. For me, the best part is how settled the band sound on this number, as if they’ve finally mastered the recipe to their songwriting success…and they know it. Good on these lads; look for their EP on March 1st from Highland Park Records.

Sparkling Pop from The Boys with the Perpetual Nervousness

I know next to nothing about The Boys with the Perpetual Nervousness, other than the fact that they’re name pays homage to the Feelies. Other than that, I’ve just been given this bright pop number that you’ll hopefully rave about to all your friends. The crisp guitar sounds circling about your ears are absolutely charming, and the warmth of the melodious vocals shouldn’t escape your attention. At this moment, less than 20 people have jammed out to this track, and that has to change, even though we don’t know a damn thing other than this glorious tune. I have been promised, via the Soundcloud notes, that there will be a 7″ coming later this Spring.

Spirit of Shoegaze Alive with Maff

From the instant this new Maff song jumps through your speakers, the guitars and percussion crash upon you, wave after wave of noise…beautifully crafted, of course. Then, the group pull back, allowing the Spanish lyrics to take center-stage, which makes sense seeing as the group calls Chile home. For me, the draw is in the unique details that flourish throughout, such as the way the guitars ring, then abruptly stop around the 1:20 mark, culminating in a dizzying nosedive of guitar noise. The band will release their Melanina EP on April 2nd, and I’m crossing my fingers that it’s filled with tracks as beautiful as this.

Hear a New Kid Dakota Tune

The story behind Kid Dakota‘s most recent album, Denervation, are quite tragic…from the loss of a dear friend to physical impairment. But, if ever there were a silver lining, then perhaps this album is just that. You can hear Darren Jackson coming to terms with his experiences in this tune, yet there’s hint of promise at the end of the tunnel. What I’m fascinated is the way the song moves; it begins heavily, with sharp guitars chopping down, then slowly fades into another the stripped down solitude of the song’s middle. Eventually, the tune slowly exits the building, but the impression is one you’re not likely to forget. Look for the new record on February 9th via Graveface Records.
