Seazoo Ready Their Debut Album, Drop New Single

Having already written about the forthcoming Seazoo album, I’d be remiss if I didn’t drop this new single. While it opens noisily, all things considered, the group settle into a subtle groove, riding guitar lines and shared vocal duties. There’s a noisy little ambling in the song’s mid-point, allowing the group to flex their songwriting chops. But, little keyboard notes trickle in, joined by the male/female vocal duet, crashing down in pure pop fashion, taking us to the song’s end. Another little ditty that pretty much guarantees the band will have a hit on their hands when Dig is released on January 26th.

Brand New Tres Oui Tunes

Our friends in Tres Oui (remember when we put out their EP this year) are moving up the label chain, landing over on Shrimper for the release of their debut LP, Poised to Flourish. Today the band dropped the first single, which is one of the liver favorites for me. Tight drumming opens way for the angling guitar lines and Nate’s warm vocals to calmly ride the wave created by guitarist Stevsie Garcia. Bouncing grooves, infectious hooks and enough energy to keep your feet tapping throughout. Look for the LP on February 9th of next year.

Pop Number from Ravennas

Seattle duo Ravennas have been making music together since grade school, but they’re just now popping on our radar with this brilliant little single, produced by DoM. The production duties are important here, as the structure of the song is seemingly fit for bedroom pop, but this song moves beyond those limits. Verses are cooly covered in the dense wash of the song, with the chorus built for euphoric eruption by the listener. Personally, I love the way the song drifts to a close, capturing the dreamy element in the best way possible. Look for more from this promising duo in the near future.

Dirty Rock N Roller from Courters

Admittedly, my musical tastes are always all over the place, so it’s great when I can find a solid rock n’ roll tune to turn up, such as the latest tune from Courters. While the vocals have this natural rasp, the guitar work behind walks a fine line between garage rock distortion and clean post-punk lines; it ends in a chaotic sputter, carefully wrapping up the tune. The group are releasing a split 12″ with their Boston pals, The Dazies, titled Seen a Ghost, which comes out next week!

Upbeat Pop from Wind Mile

Wind Mile reached out to me the other day with a brief story of their move from France to Norway; they also offered up this new ditty they’ve crafted together. You’ll find the tune rather infectious, with bouncing rhythms similar to what we heard from The Drums on their first run through the media circus. That being said, Marie has a penchant for dreamy vocal stylings. It’s a song filled with lots of promise, and a hook that makes it something you’ll return to throughout the next few days.

Olden Yolk Announce Debut Album on Trouble in Mind

When listening to this track, the knowledge that Olden Yolk is the project of Shane from Quilt might inform your listening. That’s well and good, but what you should also note is the indulgence in the true atmosphere of psychedelia crafted in the track below. Notes billow like smoke in a dimly lit room, with time taken to really let the guitar licks to find their own way into the world. The vocal performance is quite captivating as well, especially when joined by a heavy vocal accompaniment that’s sure to entrance you. The debut self-titled LP will be released by Trouble in Mind on February 23rd.

The Bankees Are Back

It hasn’t been that long since the last release from The Bankees, but we were under the impression that Friends (2015) would be the last release from our favorite French popsters. Luckily, Simon reached out this week to drop me their new album, Sunny Days. It’s carefully crafted casual pop music, with hints of Kevin Morby or Dan Bejar, but what I love is that the track are succinct, with only a couple of the tunes stretching beyond the 3 minute mark. You’ll find this record fits perfectly into your afternoon rotation, letting you drift off into the slow crawl of the day.

New Music from Bill Baird

On Friday, one-time Austinite Bill Baird will release his latest outing, Straight Time; he says it will be the last self-recorded/produced of his for awhile. On the tune below, he paints an ode to Austin, filled with various local native name drops, but ultimately, it’s the song that takes hold of you. It’s an ambling track, riding this beautiful guitar sound to the promised land; it’s almost as if you’re sitting in the back of a convertible on a warm Texas afternoon, cruising down the interstate as Bill coolly blasts his vocals through your stereo speakers. Somehow he’s captured the essence of Austin in song; I particularly enjoy the slow burn of the chorus before he jumps into the “Wilford Brimley” line. If you want to know what this city’s all about, give this tune a listen…and be sure to grab Straight Time on Friday.

Bartees and the Strange Fruit

Bartees Cox might not be the household name you’re looking for, but his work as Bartees & the Strange Fruit is likely to be impacting. His new album Magic Boy is a collection of songs about family and black life, but as important is his love for the recording process…obsessions with reel to reel and tape recordings are present throughout. His voice has this powerful fragility to it, melodically stepping atop warped loops and notes…with a female vocal accompaniment driving home the emotional appeal. You’ll be able to hear his new album in its entirety when it sees a release on December 8th via Pineapple Record Co.

New Ditty from Austin’s Hola Beach

I’m always a sucker for a good pop song, especially when the execution of said song is pulled off to perfection…like this new tune from Hola Beach. This track employs a really bare bones approach for the opening two minutes, with the drum sitting way in the back of the mix in order for the natural melody to unfold in step with the guitar notes. A few of those notes meander out of context, crafting the slightest bit of tension leading to the crashing wave of the song’s last minute. Look for their new EP to drop this weekend!
