Really Digging This New Fumes

New Fumes is the work Daniel Huffman of Dallas, and honestly, I was sold on the track by the descriptor calling this “weirdo rock.” It should come as no surprise that Daniel’s worked with acts like Tobacco or the Flaming Lips; you can hear the pulsating rhythms of the former and the vocals of the latter throughout this track. It begs for digestion, careful consumption by the listener; I like that it just doesn’t seem safe, almost blissfully abnormal. One thing’s for sure, when Teeming 2, is released by Rad Cult on November 24th, I’ll have my ears ready.

Bill Waters Rules

While we’re about to settle into Fall (yes, even in Texas), it’s time to break out the easy listening. Bill Waters should be someone on your radar, pulling from an era of pop that carries wistful melodies and promises of sunsets on the horizon. You’ll get a slight bounce from the strumming of the guitar, offset by a sinisterly smooth vocal performance. This song is the first off his debut Humid EP, which will handled by Forged Artifacts.

After the much deserved success with Taster, Hovvdy are ready for you to be fall in love with their new work. Oddly, their new work sounds like a classic throwback to late 90s/early 00s indie rock…thinking of slow-core acts like American Football crashing into Death Cab’s early affairs…maybe with a hint of the Wrens soft-pop underbelly; those are compliments in my book. From the slight rise in vocal tones at the end of the note to the song’s steadied pacing, everything here has purpose, has meaning. The band drop their new album Cranberry on February 9th via Double Double Whammy; sit back and watch them ascend into indie stardom.

 

Brand New Single from Bayonne

Oh Roger Sellers, you’ve got a habit of making great pop music. It’s been a minute since Bayonne (Roger’s stage name) officially released Primitives, but now we have a slight glimmer of what’s to come from the multi-instrumentalist. What I love about this new song is that it doesn’t feel like a typical composition; it almost feels like the product of a full band working in the studio, rather than the genius of just one man. Pop fans will surely appreciate the construction, especially when it comes to those vocal melodies that seem to rise from the mix. Who knows when we’ll get more from Bayonne, but for now, this great tune will suffice.

Another Track from El Lago

Not too long ago we brought you the first single from El Lago; today we’ve got another one for you from the band’s debut, Colors. If you’re looking to pigeonhole the band, well, good luck. This round they’re taking some of the pop sensibility and shifting it into a darkened post-rock vibe, albeit a slightly dreamy one. The layering of guitars, particularly that in the distant background, creates an ominous touch that permeates the tune. It’s a slow-charmer, gradually unfolding through your speakers in the most captivating of ways. Colors drops on November 4th via Miss Champagne Records.

This latest single from Plastic Flowers perfectly encapsulates his ability to craft tunes for the sake of escapism. The soft quality of the vocals pulls you in, synths wrap you up and the song just calmly sits in your being. Hints of dark bedroom pop are evident, but there’s this overwhelming sensation that allows you to momentarily step outside of yourself; this is the powerful music he’s crafting over in London. His new album, Absent Forever, will be released on November 10th via Native Sound.

Not that long ago we brought you news of a new Bed Wettin’ Bad Boys album coming our way, and now we’ve got another jam from the album to share with you. For me, this is where indie rock should always go. The chords ring, with slight elements of distortion to keep the noise level up, but it all works in a unifying pop realm. You like noisy rock? You’ll win with this one. You want a swirling bit of pop as waves of feedback crash? You win again. Basically, we’re all winning when songs like this are unleashed into the world. Look for the group’s brand new album, Rot, to drop via What’s Your Rupture on November 10th.

Still Jamming This Mammoth Penguins LP

We’re at that point of the year when music slowly starts to fade as people scramble to tell you what you should have listened to in 2017. I’m guilty of it myself, but a release that’s still fairly fresh, and still getting constant play, is the new Mammoth Penguins (& Friends) LP, John Doe. It’s a concept album centered around the title character, told through various characters. But, don’t get lost on the idea of what is or isn’t a “concept” album; sit back and enjoy the dedication to the songwriting that’s prevalent throughout. Fresh Tunes from The New Tigers

We haven’t heard much from The New Tigers since their last EP in 2016, but lucky for us, they’ve been hard at work on a brand new album for Soliti…with the accompanying single. The band are brandishing the best sort of casual pop, relaxed in style, yet filled with delicious melodies that captivate listeners. Perhaps the most intriguing part of this tune is its ability to continuously keep you interested by minor musical adjustments, turning the melody this way and that so as to provide more depth. The band’s attention to detail surely means their next LP will be a mesmerizing listen, so stay tuned!

Pop Vibes from Jeremy Neale

I think John Hughes certainly would have used Jeremy Neale in one of his movies; it’s got just enough attitude while still holding onto a broad swath of pop. Neale’s vocal delivery almost comes off like a young Costello (you even get that in the video with his performance). But, ultimately this is a pop song, and Neale turns the chorus into pure saccharine as he brings in a female counterpart to soften the harmonies. There’s more of a punch to the front of the track, but that just allows you to wallow in the sweetness that helps the song fade out. Jeremy will be releasing his debut Getting the Team Back Together next Friday, November 3rd.
