Brand New Birds of Night

The last we heard from Denton’s Birds of Night was back in 2015 when the group released their self-titled album; we actually wrote about it quite a lot. Just the other day they dropped us a line to let us know they’d recorded a brand new jam, with an accompanying video. On this number you’ll hear some of the group’s psychedelic influences, but you might also note that they’ve taken up a heavier tone…like a world where Black Rebel Motorcycle Club crashes over at the house of Queens of the Stone Age. The video takes the live performance and combines it with some of those tripped out touches apparent in their tunes. As of now, this is just a one-off number…but let’s hope this means more jams.

Brand New Salad Boys

While we were out galavanting at ACL, this Salad Boys tune quietly dropped in our laps, and regardless of who covered it then, I’m tossing it up today. Metalmania went largely unnoticed, but that mostly has to do with our own poor efforts, as it clearly was a notable release in my book. Now the New Zealand act are prepping This Is Glue, and if ever there was a modern band that encompassed the region, well, then this surely would be it; listen to the way that guitar runs in circles around your inner ear, matched by a sublime soft melody. Look for the new LP to drop on January 19th of the next year via Trouble In Mind (who else)!

 

Slow Synth Vibes from Tiger Cub

Back in 2016 Tiger Cub quietly dropped a collection of synth tunes via Bandcamp, and all we knew then was that it was the project of Bradford Gibson, one time (and possibly future) member of local act Dangeresque. Good news is that he’s quietly wrapped up another collection of songs, and now you can delight in both the song, and the playfully nostalgic accompanying video. I love the wash of the synths, turning just ever so slight to match the melody created by Gibson’s vocals. Crutch is the title of this new collection of jams, and you can find it real soon from Spooky Syrup…more details to come!

Enjoy a Pop Tune from Delsbo Beach Club

Delsbo Beach Club are hitting me hard, taking modern indie fascination with that slightly dreamy guitar, but also bringing in the appropriate dosage of indiepop grooves. It has this natural swagger to it, taking all comers of pop music under its wings. The vocals have a certain distance from the listener, almost an echo, encouraging you to turn the volume up just a wee bit higher. That’s a good thing, so dance uncoordinatedly about while the guitar jabs angularly and the synths wash over your spirit. Pretty solid introduction to one of Stockholm’s hottest acts; look for future releases, including this single, from Rama Lama Records.

Totally Mild Release New Single

Totally Mild was one of the group’s I listed as an act to keep an eye on during SXSW last year; I caught them a handful of times myself. Recently they’ve signed on with Chapter Music, one of the great homes for Australia artist. All that said, this new song is super impressive, and I’m reveling in the fact that it employs these little guitar stabs that recall early days in the jangle scene; they do move on in a dreamier style, complimented by Elizabeth Mitchell’s sultry delivery. Her sounds likes it’s filled with great songs; it will be released on February 23rd of next year.

Another Great Tune from Cut Worms

While I’ve admittedly been a really power-pop/indiepop state of mind, this tune from Cut Worms was able to make its way into repeated spins. Songwriter Max Clarke is said to have written this tune after the passing of Lou Reed, and I think Lou’s looking down with a grin. The slight quiver in the vocals really helps deliver that emotional pull, and I like the natural melodic turns that come with change of phrasing. Something nostalgic here, making me wish I was turning this up as I drove off into the horizon. Look for the Alien Sunset EP from Cut Worms on October 20th via Jagjaguwar.

Spanish Power Pop from Futuro Terror

Admittedly, we don’t cover a lot of tracks in the foreign tongue, even though both RayRay and I can speak Spanish. So I thought I’d toss out this Futuro Terror album stream that I’ve really been enjoying. It’s got these great power riffs, like quick arena rock, and the vocal inflections remind me of Austin’s own Sweet Talk. Honestly, I don’t even think you need to completely understand the lyrics to enjoy these tunes; you can just treat the voice as an added instrument. New Music from Best Friend

Beko Disques are probably one of my favorite labels at the moment, quietly going about releasing excellence with little to no need for playing the game. They just dropped this delightful Best Friend track to announce the forthcoming LP for the group. You’ll find the vocals sitting back in the distance on this number, almost as if they’re fading away as you put your ear next to your speaker. Dreamy jangles seep out from the guitars, with some tight little drum rolls to fill out the vibe. The release is scheduled to drop come November, so keep your eyes peeled.

One Last Pia Fraus Tune Before Friday

Field Ceremony will be floating around your record stores starting this Friday, but Pia Fraus wanted to give you one more chance to lose yourself in their sound before you’re required to pick it up. This number’s a slow charmer, really working the pace angle here, allowing you to maximize what you pull from the song’s natural melody. Vocals float and circle one another, wrapped in a blanket of female/male overlapping warmth. Of course a gem of an album could only come out on a label like Shelflife, so support the small guy with great tastes and grab the LP.

Go Out and Listen to FACS

I was in love with FACS before I even knew the band existed. The trio that have formed this band all were part of Disappears, so my adoration was already there. Then they’ve signed on with Trouble In Mind Records to release their debut Negative Houses…again, I’m a constant TiM supporter…so check that box. Your 8 minute journey on the band’s first single here admittedly requires some patience; it won’t hit you until you’ve fully given yourself over to the stretching number. Ambient noise, echoes and rolling percussion fill the first three minutes, though I suppose fill is the wrong word to use, as there’s a huge emptiness that’s omnipresent. When the vocals commence, they seem to climb out from the abyss, primal urges escaping as last gasps unto the world above. Definitely not your run-of-the mill number, and we’re all the better for it. The album will be available in March of next year!
