Ghost Orchard Join Orchid Tapes

ghostorchardMan, this is precisely the music that I think of when I think of Orchid Tapes…just one of the reasons I really love the label. This new Ghost Orchard tune from their forthcoming album Bliss is remarkable; it’s got the exact sentiment that defines bedroom pop music. But, surprisingly, there’s a maturity to it that you wouldn’t associate with an 18 year-old, like singer/songwriter Sam Hall. It sounds like the perfect track for you to drift away into your daydreams at work, or to lay on the floor and just let your mind run amok. Should be out via the label real soon, ya here.

How’d I Miss This: New Malcolm Middleton

malcolmIt’s been awhile, quite awhile, since I’ve heard anything from former Arab Strap member Malcolm Middleton. I kept checking back in, hoping he’d offer up something similar to the brilliant Waxing Gibbous. Well, the follow-up has been announced via Nude Records…and somehow I’m just now hearing about it! But, I’m a bit unsure of the lead single…or at least what it might lead to. While the last solo effort was stripped down and ornate, this single offers glimpses of an electro-pop bit of sadness coming our way. It’s still Middleton’s voice and distinct delivery, so I like it, but not sure it’ll endure for the entirety of an album. I guess we’ll see when Summer of ’13 hits on May 27th. Make up your own mind!

Stream the New EP from A Novel Resort

novelresortLong ago I was really excited to hear that Michael from Northern Portrait was working on a new project, A Novel Resort. But, while that first track was great, things had been rather silent until Jigsaw Records up and broke out the band’s debut EP, Island of Atlas. The songs on this EP dwell in the softer side of indiepop, trickling melodies, calming vocals and lyrics that will run through your head. Another Track from The Blessed Isles

blessedislesI have a feeling that B. Gray’s going to be asking me for this album from The Blessed Isles, as this is the sort of electro-pop he’s known to love; it hearkens back to 80s club bangers, though with just a tad bit more creativity thrown into the mix. Guitars dance in and out of the main beat, whilst a little whisper of a vocal sample often jumps through the main voice. Their new album, Straining Hard Against the Strength of Night, is going to be released by Saint Marie Records on May 20th; it’s going to make you dance and gaze, but in the most thoughtful of ways.

Strong Performance from Kwesi Foraes

kwesiThis is such a soulful ballad, seemingly informed by the life and times of a troubadour; it’s got elements of blues and folk, sure, but you can hear the road weariness in the vocal performance of Kwesi Foraes. But, what really sells the track is not solely Kwesi’s performance, but the production elements added on, such as the strings, that really elevate this track to next level. Don’t think a single person will be able to find anything wrong with this tune. Keep an eye out for his debut EP, which should be coming our way very very soon.

Boyfriends Drop New Single

Creativity and catchiness, propelled by a band sending out a message to the masses in everything they do. Of course, it has to be fitting that they’ll be touring soon with their like-minded friends Tacocat. You want an energetic bouncer to kick off your Monday in a spastic manner? Power Pop from The Person & The People

thepersonandthepeopleAlliteration aside, I think I found my jam of the week, well, one of them anyways. This brand new track from The Person & The People came in via a friend yesterday, and I couldn’t think of a better way to head towards the weekend. If you’re like me, you’ll likely hear remnants of the landscape left by Teenage Fanclub. There’s warmth in the guitar sound, solid vocal harmony and it turns corners at just the right spots; it’s spot on perfect. This is the first single from the band’s new record, Dark and Low, which will be released by Land Ski Records on April 22nd.

New Single from Vow

vowAnother week, and another track from rising label, The Native Sound: Vow’s “Green Light”. Musically, Vow often times resembles the construction of Beach House, though they seem to have polished off those atmospheric edges in favor or more direct contact with the listener; there’s an immediacy that comes with the delivery of of Julia’s powerful voice. It even takes a nice turn in the latter half of the song that recalls the early days of Metric. Ultimately, it leaves you with this soaring bit of indie rock that you’ll spin time and time again. Look for the band’s debut LP, Kind Eyes on May 27th.

Intimate Number from Roman Lakes

romanlakesI’m always looking to cover the work of Bleeding Gold Records; they have an admirable roster and a unique style of releases. This week they’ve just put up a new digital single from Roman Lakes (NYOP). It’s vocals and picking, with a slight extra here and there from slide guitar in the distance. Listening, you’ll feel as if you’re there for the recording, almost hearing the buzz on the microphone in the final product. Go grab it from the label, and feel free to donate a dollar or three to the art/music world and its continued longevity.

New Pop from The Hairs

thehairsI’m surprised that this new track from The Hairs isn’t getting more traction. This is the sort of literary pop music that people pine for, but maybe that’s just in my small circle of friends. Regardless, The Hairs combine these vocal hooks that wrap around this excellent songwriting, churning out infectiousness that will resonate on your stereo forever. They’re also one of the many great acts that’s going to be playing at the excellently curated NYC Popfest in a few weeks. Look for the group’s new album, While, I Hated Life, Barbarian, which will be released by Old Flame Records on June 24th.
