Steady Holiday Announces Debut

dreThe story goes that while Dre Babinski was playing about LA, she longed for her own voice, a place to call her own, musically speaking…and now we have Steady Holiday. I think we’ll all be grateful that she did, as this new single is a sultry piece of lounge pop that’s pretty inescapable. Beneath the mix, and taking on a role of its own is this knifing guitar chord, moving here, moving there, subtly. I like the way it contrasts with Dre’s flawless vocals that soothe your ears throughout. Her debut album, Under the Influence will be out via Infinite Best on June 24th.

More Chris Cohen? Yes, Please!

chrisA few years ago, I was milling about at SXSW trying to catch every band between Hotel Vegas and Volstead. Like many a year, you could easily pinpoint a sound, until I caught Chris Cohen playing. I stopped in my tracks, drawn to the gentle voice floating from the stage; it’s much the way I spent today when I heard his newest single. There’s a calm to it, something almost effortless in every musical move he makes. You’ll likely hear notes of Dent May or Jens Lekman on this track, although I think Chris takes more of a turn away from the pop-centric vibe. His new album, As If Apart, is being releasing on May 6th via Captured Tracks, and you can bet we’ll be playing it to the max.

Classic Pop from Red Sleeping Beauty

redsleepingAfter a long hiatus, Red Sleeping Beauty has picked things up over the last few years, culminating in the latest 7″ for Shelflife/Labrador. It’s just a careful wash of electronic joy, the sort that one millions of hearts on late 80s radio. Male and female vocals trade places over synthesized grooves, erupting in a soaring Spanish chorus laden with guitar working low in the mix. I suggest you go get your hands on this release before it’s too late to feel like you’ve fallen in love all over again; it’s available now!

Adam J. Cook Preps Debut Solo Effort

Those of you who’ve followed our site might recognize the songwriting chops of Adam J. Cook, as he was formerly a member of Austin’s Genuine Leather. But, he’s currently bucked the trend and moved the other way, heading out to LA to craft his debut, Attack Formation. His lead single takes on the style of casual pop, just working on perfecting the internal hooks of the song, while throwing out a relaxed pace and repeated lyrical lines. It’s the sort of tune you’ll play at work today, and the guy in the cubicle next to you will pop his head over and ask you who you’re listening to…so go ahead, listen.

10624604_757477180962452_2560762181686648683_nThe sad truth about music today is that so many great pieces will go undiscovered, and I wouldn’t feel right if I didn’t at least try to give more attention to Dream Boys. They recorded a second album, Happy to Forget, which saw a limited tape release. But, now they’re letting the world stream it in its entirety, and music fans would be remiss if they didn’t at least devote some time to a listen. It’s a beautiful combination of jangling indiepop and warm melodies, sounding far more accomplished than I even expected. I long for albums like this one, and you should too, so stream it below to make your day.

Another Pop Rocker from Mrs. Magician

mrsmagicianMrs. Magician was one of my SXSW regret; I was unable to fit them into my schedule. But, at least they come right back after my mistake with a brand new single from their forthcoming Bermuda LP. This one’s another hook-laden blaster, ready to be turned up loud just in time for those Spring drives through your neighborhood. Don’t think that just because these guys are bring you A1 pop tunes that they’re not keeping it real; you can hear gang vocals coming your way via the vocals. Swami Records are releasing the new effort on May 20th.

Great Classic Indiepop from Why We Love

whyweloveIt was a great week for us indiepop fans, so while I’m playing catch-up, I should toss out this brand new tune from Why We Love. It’s the brand of pop where the vocals take the lead, and of course, take on the subject of love. I’m hooked on the way the chorus is delivered; it hits the right notes, remaining in your memory long after the song had ended. It’s one of the many great tunes on the band’s latest EP, The Boy You Knew, which is currently available on a limited run. You’ll be okay today, if you listen to this track.

Another New Album from No Museums

nomuseumsNo Museums promised us they’d be working on a record or two a year, and they’ve just released the early part of of their 2016 work with Darkening. I’ve spent the past few days digging in before sharing with you, and while I definitely enjoy, it’s hard to pin down an exact track that’s a “single,” though many folks are picking up on “Stationing Out,” which I’ve shared below. It feels like a complete listen to me; it’s one that harkens back to some of the sonic elements of both dream pop and shoegaze, whilst still grounded in an absolute quietness. It’s currently available for NYP, but we always suggest donating to the work of artists. Grab it HERE.

hovvdyHovvdy seems to be one of the hottest tickets in the Austin market right now…as far as bands on the smaller scale of the world go. This song “Meg” is their second single from their forthcoming album, Taster. I think I might actually like this one a bit more than the first; it has the lo-fidelity approach that allows the earnestness of the band to breakthrough your speakers. It’s the trickling bit of pop that got really had me hooked on music in the late 90s. Look for the new tunes on April 15th via Merdurhaus/Sports Day.

Pleased to Meet You: E’Spaniel

10678614_1518317681738982_4339718075869743352_nFelt like a lot of the tunes were running in the same musical style this week, so I reached out into the depths of the Internet to find E’Spaniel. The guitar hook on this single immediately caught me, reminding me a great deal of our ATH act, Young Girls. It’s jangling and grooving, yet there’s a nice rounded softness on the vocals that brings in a different element to the group’s work. This is the band’s latest work, but now that I’m in love with their sound, I’ll be keeping an eye on them to bring you news going forward.
