Brand New Mind Spiders

MindspidersIt doesn’t seem like Mark Ryan ever quits writing songs, and his work with Mind Spiders is always high on my list. They just tossed out this brand new song from their fourth album, Prosthesis, and it’s showing the continued progression from the band. Ryan’s voice has this haunting delivery on the track, while the guitars race you towards some evil late night crash scene, swerving in and out of your speakers. I love the fact that listening to this band feels so familiar, yet there’s always something refreshing and new from them in the way the songs come to a head. The new effort hits on March 12th via Dirtnap.

Stream MCG’s Outside EP + Show Spotlight (1.30)

mcgEarlier this year I picked MCG as one of the band’s that would rise out of Austin this year (they played our ATX Popfest), spreading the pop gospel across the lands. They’ve been so kind to allow us to share their Outside EP with you as a preview before their 7″ release this Saturday over at Empire Control Room. Not only is the EP a must have for local vinyl collectors, but the show features some incredible local talent, including new act, Lou Rebecca, who we’ve heard lots of great things about (namely Stereolab allusions)…also Major Major Major and Mobley will play. It’s a great night to celebrate another solid Austin release with a bunch of solid Austin bands. Here’s the tracks on the EP, but one is only available if you grab the vinyl version.

New Music from Film School

filmschoolIt’s been quite some time since we’ve heard from Film School, especially the original line-up that helped make their brand new June EP. Seeing as that’s been almost ten years, things have changed, both for the music world and for the band. You can hear growth and maturity in the band’s new single, opening with a sprawling bit of post-rock before the yearning vocals drone echo through your ears. It’s a fitting track to be matched with the black and white cinematography of the video meant to accompany the tune. Look for the new EP on February 12th.

Fresh Flowers Track

flowThe indie world swoons when Flowers come into play; they’ve been crafting the dreamier side of indiepop for some time, and we here at ATH eagerly await their brand new release. This song is probably one of the finer pieces they’ve done. I think the recording is done perfectly, in every facet. Their new record is titled Everybody’s Dying to Meet You, and it’s being released by Kanine in the US (Fortuna Pop in UK). While you’re listening to this song, try to think of something else that sounds this damn good; I bet you cant!

Marrow Interview + Show Preview @ Lambert’s (1.31)

marrow-mainChicago’s Marrow are making their way into Austin this Sunday over at Lamberts, supporting their excellent new album, The Gold Standard. I caught up with the band’s Macie Stewartreal quick via email to chat about life, Chicago’s music scene and their continuing growth as a band. Opening for the band will be Sima Cunningham. Dreamy Track from Star to Be Re-Issued

starOk, so this is an old track from Star, almost ten years old in fact. But, I was cruising through Saint Marie Records, just jamming, and saw that they’re going to re-issue Devastator, the band’s 2007 hit album. It’s funny just how much you can see present influences in this old tune; there’s dreamy elements via Shannon Roberts voice, but a distorted guitar knifes it’s way, building a nice wall of sound. Is dream-gaze a genre? It has to be right? No word yet on when the re-issue comes out, but it sounds pretty great, so I’m digging on it.

Fresh Indiepop from Tangible Excitement!

erThree names. Scott Stevens, Mark Monnone and Stewart Anderson. Those of you who are indiepop/power pop fans are surely swooning, even at the thought of these three getting together. Well, you’re in luck because this new super group, Tangible Excitement has written some great songs for a split mini-LP with the Ginnels (who I’ve included track of as well because I love them). My only complaint on this piece is that it’s too short. It’s like a teaser, leaving me clamoring for more and more. Luckily, Emotional Response will be releasing it on February 5th…so not too far away!

On the Ginnels track, this tune I included from their Mountbatten Class because it’s being re-issued by ER, and it’s absolutely one of my favorite songs from the band. You should buy this too!

Another Day Another Gorgeous Bully Tune

gogeWhile I don’t want to post the same old same old from the blogosphere, I will willingly post the same old same old from bands I love. Gorgeous Bully, in case you haven’t noticed, have been on my list of great jams for some time. This time it’s a pretty straight forward jam, lamenting the fact that our singer doesn’t have much to do…and you know, maybe that’s good because it helps write more tracks that I can’t ever seem to get enough of this work. Might not even be released anywhere other than right here…so enjoy.

Playing Catch-Up: Socorro!

flavorsFinally feel like we’re getting our feet underneath us here, so checking in on some of my favorite labels that I’ve not looked in on in a bit…Lolipop Records being one of those. Just recently they released Flavor of the Day, the newest effort from Socorro!. As the description hints, there are hints of jangling but you can also feel a more classic rock inflection in these songs. It’s Been a Minute, Adam Green – Welcome Back

adamI’ve got a lot of strange respect for Adam Green; he’s somehow managed to make a pretty decent career out of of the madness that was The Moldy Peaches. He made some waves this week with the announcement that he’d be reimagining Aladdin…featuring some Macaulay Kulkin. I didn’t really care until I heard some tracks, which to be honest, wear the simplicity of Green’s music…that always touches home for me. There’s a familiarity in his voice, and while simple, there aren’t too many folks sounding exactly like him. I’m sure there will be some great tunes when he releases the music that accompanies Aladdin…like the below track.
