Enjoying This Blankus Larry

blankusAs we work to get back on our feet (sorry our server got hacked), I’m kind of going through things I wanted to post, but couldn’t. This Blankus Larry was one tune that I gravitated towards, mostly because I’m a sucker for a song that goes quietloudquiet. At times, this tune seems like your run-of-the-mill folk tune, yet it gets richer as the distortion is amped up a bit in the speakers. This tune will appear on the band’s forthcoming album, Problemo, which is slated for a February 5th release date. You like?

Premiere: Sparrows Gate Warm Your Ears

sparrowsgateThis new Sparrows Gatetrack opens with little more than a vocal and a piano background, but within moments the song takes on deeper arrangements, offering soft percussive touches and an atmospheric bit of strings/guitars to fill in all the empty spaces. Songs such as these sink deep into your soul, pulling out the emotive notes as you gaze into the nearest fire, trying to stay warm in these winter times. As the song moves all the way forward, there’s this haunting little string piece that always sticks out to me; it’s a forlorn touch that seems to step in line with the tones of the vocals. Look for the group’s new effort, Ghost Blue, which comes out on January 22nd via Royal Oakie Tapes and Records.

Brand New Track from Free Time

free-timeWhat! New Free Time?! I’m in. This band now calls NYC their home, though they originated in our favorite Aussie town of Melbourne. It’s primarily been the project of Dion who played with Twerps when we booked them for a SXSW show long ago (the line-up currently includes Marty of Twerps!). Honestly, on the band’s last LP, I thought the songs moved just a touch too slowly for my tastes. But, this new song seems absolutely perfect. Guitar sounds are perfect, they bring in some harmonizing vocals and just a casual hint of jangling to go with the hip beat. Sure, it’s early, but this has been one of my favorite tracks of 2016 so far. Their new album, In Search for Free Time, comes out soon via Bedroom Suck/Underwater Peoples.

Hear Some New Summer Salt Jams

summer salt 1 (1)I’m really excited to be working with these guys on our ATH Records label. The voice of Matt Terry alone would win it for me, but Phil and Eugene aren’t too shabby either, filling in the corners with their bossa nova rhythms. Plus, having seen several Austin acts this week, I love the fact that these three genuinely seem to love playing together…you can tell they’re having fun, and sometimes, that carries out. Anyways, they just got some UK love for their new single, and I figured I had to put it up over here too, seeing as we’re putting out their Going Native EP. Just another reason why Summer Salt could be the biggest rising star in Austin this year. Grab a copy of the EP HERE (it comes out in two weeks).

Fresh Music from Black Twig

blackyIt’s a fresh year, so why not start it off with some fresh tunes from Finland and Black Twig. We’ve enjoyed what this band has had to offer before now, but this might be the best work they’ve completed. There’s a casual approach, just filling the song with these sliding alternative guitar chords that cut through your speakers; it sounds like a modern spin on some of the tunes we got from Teenage Fanclub. Vocals sit perfectly in the mix, providing the perfect emotional draw for listeners…never getting in the way of the instruments. Their third album, Blaze on a Plain, will be released by Soliti in April of this year; sounds like it’s going to be a helluva record.

More Quiet-ude from Michael Nau

Erika_12JKT EPS_r4It’s about time you delve into the work of Michael Nau, the man behind Cotton Jones, as he prepares you for his new solo outing. As you’ll see on this track, there’s a very careful entry into the track via gently picked strings. Then Nau jumps in with his voice, offering up a softened vocal that’s quite enchanting. For those that weren’t familiar with him before, songs like this one should prepare you to get lost in the forthcoming listen of Mowing, his album for Suicide Squeeze that hits stores on February 19th.

New Rocker from The By Gods

thebygods3-by-bradley-spitzerWe’ve had a frustrated week thus far, so this song from The By Gods comes at a perfect time, for me anyways. I’ll tell you right off the bat that the band aren’t doing anything that’s going to blow you away; they’re bringing straight-ahead rock n’ roll that’s executed really well. Sometimes you just come across a track that makes you feel good, makes you feel alive…and I definitely get that vibe here. If this is the sort of thing they bring to the table, then their album Get On Feelings looks to be a rocking good time…and there’s nothing wrong with that.

ATX Spotlight: New Music from Cross Record

emThis new single is one of my favorites on the newCross Recordalbum. I think the biggest thing for me is the slight bit of static that slightly crackles through your speakers; it seems like some sort of distant message that’s slowly making its way to your ears. Compound that with the varying textures/layers place atop the vocals then you’ll end up with a very avant bit of craftsmanship. I mean, even the explosive IDM touch at the very end is spectacular. Look for Wabi Sabion January 29th via Ba Da Bing.

Pleased to Meet You: Witching Waves

withcingwavesBefore this morning I had little to no knowledge of Witching Waves, but I’ve spent the better part of my morning scouring the Internet for information on the London trio. They’ve got a record of covers, a few singles and the Fear of Falling Down LP, which came out in 2014…making waves all the way across the sea. The band have just finished up recording a brand new album, signing on to work with HHBTM for the release of Crystal Cafe. Think of angular female-fronted punk/post-punk, along the lines of Grass Widow…with a slightly more pop-centric focus. Look for the album in early 2016, but while you’re waiting, enjoy this killer new track to round out your day.

Cool Groove from Alohaha

alohaAs we all prepare to head off into the holiday season, this song from Alohaha seems like a really great way to sort of wrap up 2015. There’s this slow current that pushes the music along, utilizing slide guitar and other little stabs as the vocals come across in a relaxed fashion. It’s the kind of track that feels like it could be overproduced, ruining the emotional pull of the approach the band have chosen. Airy female accompanying vocals slide in at just the right times, leaving plenty of room for you to get sucked into the track. Just another great reason to keep an ear on these guys as we look forward to 2016.
