Ripper Rip a Rocker

otcI feel like a good bit of pop music always needs to be juxtaposed to something a little more dangerous, a little more sinister. So, it’s a good thing the folks at Land Ski Records have been so busy lately, offering up this new blast of rock n’ roll from Ripper. Take the sound of the guitar, combine it with the angsty vocal delivery, then toss in a nice pounding beat from the drum section…add it all up and you’ve got something ready to build a riotous little pit in your favorite venue. The Minneapolis four-piece will be kicking out their new A.D. EP in early December via Land Ski and Lawn Chair Records.

Misanthropic Death Rock from Shallow Sanction

shallowI didn’t use those adjectives, FYI; they came via the email with this track from Shallow Sanction. Feel like I need to put out a harder-edge today since I’ve been mostly dwelling in really rad pop music all week. I mean, I’m not sure about the death rock, but there’s definitely a bit of danger lurking on this tune…either from the feedback that shrilly blasts your eardrums or the explosive breakdown where it sounds like the band’s spinning out of control. You’ll hear this song on a new 7″ the band are releasing with Alter on November 27th.

Sunflower Bean Readies Debut Album

beanThere’s been some good buzz around Sunflower Bean, and it looks like the group is finally ready to offer their debut to listeners. My ears definitely hear the hooks and the reasons for such quick rising adoration; I dig the sweet vocal performance of Julia on this track…akin to a young D. Harry. The group hit you hard and fast with their undeniable catchiness, then they just continue to pile it on for the rest of the track. This Brooklyn trio will release their debut, Human Ceremony, on February 5th of next year via Fat Possum.

Your Friend Sounds Pretty Special

11406208_842826325782795_8194530056117304567_oThis brand new single from Your Friend sounds really striking. It soars in the way you remember the early Beach House tracks sounding…full of a pristine vocal resting atop some very carefully crafted sonic landscapes. It sounds like Taryn Miller (the lady behind the project) has gotten some other layering tricks up here sleeve too, rounding out the empty space with touches of electronic atmospherics to build the track up in the listener’s ears. She’s just announced a new record for her Domino titled Gumption, aiming to have it out on January 29th of next year.

Pollen Polish Off Some Pop Songs

pollI was fairly unaware of Pollen until the other day, but having hit upon the group’s new single, I’m now going back and devouring their catalog, whilst looking forward for more tunes. This track’s a great little gem, operating on a strummed guitar, simple percussion and a lo-fi aesthetic that still sounds incredibly charming to me. Having been quiet for nearly a decade, the band are set to burst in 2016 with a slew of new songs and four albums, including their upcoming album, Confidence Will Kill You. It’s all being handled by Royal Mint Records who have a very limited 7″ out now, with more music to come in January.

Sparkling Song from Lanterns on the Lake

beliefsThis song from Lanterns on the Lake rules so hard that my only complaint is that it went on just a wee bit longer. Hazel Wilde’s performance on this track is stunning, yet it has this innocence to it that reminds me of Amy Millan in varying moments. Musically, you’ll find all sorts of layers to the tune. At first your focus is on the stick work at play, but eventually the guitars start to draw you in, unfolding in bursts like only the best post-rock can..it’s here when the drums take on a stronger machine-gun effect. All these signs point to a strong release for the band’s new record, Beings, which will hit this Friday via Bella Union.

Hope People Pay Attention To Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever

rbcfWhile I’m not entirely sure of the meaning behind Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, I am sure that the music the band’s crafting is something worth noticing. It’s the second time this year I’ve heard a band (the other being EZTV) harken back to an era in the late 70s/early 80s where rock n’ roll attitude was being spun in different directions, whilst always having this experimental twist. I mean, this song sounds old; it doesn’t sound like they’re channeling something from long ago, it sounds like they’re straight out of that period. Look for their Talk Tight mini-LP coming your way early next year.

More Fresh News from Le Rug

lerug2Not too long ago we brought you news of Le Rug and their new release, Game Over. It’s said to be a collection of 70+ songs on both cassette and digital formats via Fleeting Youth Records, and while that may sound daunting, I think everyone is going to get more than their fill. On the latest teen there’s almost a nostalgic late emo feel, akin to early Say Anything. Still, there’s this wild indifference to the polish and production, which makes these songs rather endearing to listeners, ignoring expectations in order to just rock ahead. Look for the release from FYR on November 20th.

New Beauty from Tindersticks

  • tindersticks_2012The power of voice is fully on display in this new Tindersticks number. Really, that’s all there is, other than some really careful orchestration that quietly surrounds the vocals on this brand new duet, which features Lhasa de Sela. Still, the varying tonal notes between the two voices is quite striking; there’s a smoky quality on both male/female sides…it’s almost like a really seductive lounge act. Interestingly, the song, as well as each song on the album, will be accompanied by a film as part of the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival. You can find the video for this track HERE. Their new release is titled The Waiting Room and sees a release date on January 22nd via City Slang.

We Hear More from Ski Lodge

darkwaveIt’s hard to tell exactly what is going on with Ski Lodge these days. At one point, I thought Andrew Marr was ready to go in his own direction and leave the name behind. But, here we are with another great new track from the band, at least in my mind. Seems to me that Marr has peeled away some of the shimmering indiepop tendencies from early on and traded them for a more synth-driven bit of dark wave. This tracks’ nice, but whether or not it packs the same punch on a full-length is yet to be determined in my mind. Still, the title of the upcoming release is New Life, which may just mean there’s something fresh being breathed into the life of this act. Look for the EP via Old Flame Records in early 2016.
