Dig the Vibe on This Young Rival Tune

youngrivalOne of my favorite acts from the Canadia is Rural Alberta Advantage, but it looks like the band has someone gunning for their spot in my heart, namely Young Rival. Interestingly, they have some vocal lineage, with a similar drawl in the presentation of voice, though there’s this little touch in the chorus where I also hear an homage to Kevin Barnes.  This track’s got energy, a little bit of a stomp to it, thus you’ll find yourself pressing play time and time again. It’s the title track from their new effort, Interior Light, which comes out on October 16th via Paper Bag Records.

New Amy Bezunartea Tune

Amy Bezunartea

Amy Bezunartea

Brian and I had the pleasure of catching Amy Bezunartea at her opening spot for Stephin Merritt earlier this year. It was here that I first heard the song that she’s now sharing as the latest single for her brand new album, New Villain. This new tune deals with the struggles a woman/girl must face in the world, especially when it comes to expectations placed upon them by the world. I really appreciate the word play too in her songwriting.  I’m definitely looking forward to her new release, which is slated for September 25th release via Kiam Records.

ATH Premiere: Knowlton Bourne Signs w/ Misra

Knowlton Promo 1Knowlton Bourne is a 23 year old native of Mississippi, which is important, as there’s definitely been some recent indie rock lineage occurring out there…like Dent May for instance.  But, with Bourne, you’re going to get more of a fuzzed-out riff blended carefully with a taste of Southern comforts. Guitar chords sound like something Ty Segall would have constructed, but the structure is slower, much like the pace of the South, which is why the tune succeeds on its own terms. This number will feature on Knowlton’s Songs from Motel 43, which is going to be released on October 2nd via Misra…enjoy your first sample of the LP.

Indiepop Magic from Red Sleeping Beauty

alwaysWhat!? 15 years later and Red Sleeping Beauty come back to the indiepop scene with one of my favorite tracks of the summer?! As soon as I pressed play on this track, I knew I was in love. It’s got a pretty simple synth line opening the track, pushing the song forward as the vocals make their way into your ears.  Niklas has the perfect voice too to make the song reach those maximum heights of pop melody.  I’m sorry but this song is just fucking brilliant; I’m probably going to play it all day long. Look for this track to appear on a new 7″ for Shelflife on September 11th.

Majical Cloudz Majic

Majical CloudzI honestly hate the streaming youtube single motif. I mean, why not embed an MP3 or a Soundcloud? But, over the last few years I’ve been constantly obsessed with the music of Majical Cloudz, so I’ve got to hold onto that and give in to Youtube. They just announced a new album, Are You Alone, via Matador on October 16th.  There’s plenty of open space on this track, and Devon’s voice seems almost pretty, but still fragile and intoxicating.  Give a listen by playing the “video.”

Chilled Out Vibe from Homeshake

sinderlynSettling into the middle of the week? The bets way to due that is to sit back and listen to this ultra-relaxed new single from Homeshake.  There’s definitely a little bit of an indie meets R&B groove going on, but the synth work is minimal, so I don’t feel like I’m being overwhelmed by beats and orchestration.  Honestly, you can just sit back and let yourself fall into this song, which is a fairly rare experience for me.  Look for his new album, Midnight Snack, to come out on 9/18 via Sinderlyn.

Fresh Kevin Morby Track

Kevin MorbySince going it on his own, Kevin Morby has been pretty busy (though I wish he’d make time for another Babies album). He is working on a new record for Dead Oceans in 2016, but the label has teased us with a bit of new music by way of this new single, slated for a 7″ in September (9/4).  It’s interesting, as he sounds older and wiser here, both in the way his vocals sound on the recording, and the lyrical content.  Honestly, I think you could see this coming from his earliest work with Woods, but I didn’t expect it to sound this polished this soon in his solo endeavors.  Need a great classic rock by way of neo-folk jam? This is the one.

Pleased to Meet You: Samson the Truest

samsonBeen feeling like a good slow jam is all I need to make this week work out perfectly, and I think I might have found the perfect song in this new single from Samson the Truest.  At first, the song felt like a soulful ballad, something mellow.  But, the more I paid attention, the more I began to hear a little bit of David Bazaan in singer Sam Geller’s voice; it ends up sounding like a really well-produced Pedro the Lion tune.  He’ll be releasing a new record, Come Back Shane, at the beginning of October, so be on the lookout.

Enjoy This Grey Lands Track

greylandsI’ve really been digging this track from Canada’s Grey Lands the last few days.  It’s got a very traditional indie rock feel, falling somewhere in the world between Spoon and the Walkmen…though I can’t help but hear tons of Sonic Youth in the guitar chords on this track (none of these are bad things in our book).  The band is set to release their debut Right Arm in just over a month on Paper Bag Records, so we wanted to make sure this preview got the band on your radar as the release date (9/11) approaches.

Ski Lodge is No More, But…

newlifeI should have posted about this the other day when I got wind that Ski Lodge was calling it quits, at least in regards to the name of the project. They only had one real release, which fueled my adoration for great indiepop.  But, those who appreciate the songwriting might want to pay attention to Andrew’s new project, New Life.  At first, this seems like a much more synth driven version of the harmonies he constructed with his old act; it almost sounds like a more accessible version of Trust, which isn’t a bad thing in my book.  Not sure about his release plans at this point, but we’ll keep you posted.  For now, RIP SKI LODGE. Best of luck, NEW LIFE.
