Spastic Rock from Hierophants

11406892_873158592739142_6444236918764143221_nI don’t really no too much about Hierophants, other than they’re based in Australia and on Goner Records.  Both things are pretty much a guarantee of my own personal enjoyment but I want you to be the judge on your own.  The song opens up in a stutter of garage rock, but it doesn’t stay there for too long, instead blasting off into a spastic land where few bands dare to go.  The end of the track is something all together different from the opening moments, closing in this oddball bounce then moving to a crunchy outro; it all makes for a listen that you don’t get every day, which is well enough in my book. Parallax Error, the album, will be out in September.

Quiet Tune from It Hugs Back

10339324_10153356917913502_2714167228139630560_oIt’s been some time since I’ve heard from London’s It Hugs Back, but perhaps that’s my own ignorance.  The group was one of the first acts that I caught on to when shoegaze came back into the spotlight, but for their new album, it seems like they’re stretching the sound quite a bit.  Personally, I was drawn immediately to their lead single, “Somnolence,” which stretches out into five minutes of really elegant, yet soft, pop music. I love the way the vocal carefully sits atop the entire track, as if its just resting there. If you’re into it, you can grab Slow Wave now.

Shelf Life Sounds Pretty Stellar

shelfsFor the last several years I’ve had a penchant for bedroom pop, wrapped in warped tape sounds, mixed with oddity a la Coma Cinema. This project from Philly’s Shelf Life reminds me of that, though the recording is a bit stronger, relying more upon the craftsmanship of the songwriting than on the process of lo-fidelity. The project is set to have its debut, Everyone Make Happy, released in September via Lefse, and this first single indicates a pretty remarkable start.  Tracks like this don’t just spring up every day, which is why I’m going to fawn on this all day long. You with me?

More From La Luz

luzesYou ready for the new La Luz to hit? If not, this song should pretty much seal the deal on the fact that the band have solidified their sound, leaving them as one of the bands you’ll fall in love with this year.  The latest single opens with this semi-Spaghetti Western psych maneuver, but quickly settles into this dreamy bit of soulful pop. Touches on guitar and keys are really light, creating this effect of that’s almost like floating; it’s very light, accentuated by the vocals being carefully placed atop it all. On August 7th you’ll be able to get your hands on Weirdo Shrine courtesy of Hardly Art.

ATX Spotlight: Pleased to Meet Pleasers

pleasersIt’s been a pretty awesome week for new Austinite Matthew Melton; we ran a single from some of his solo work, and now we’ve got his new project, Pleasers.  We should probably give a shout out to his bandmate Ben Tipton too, who is responsible for a great deal of rock n’ roll goings on in this city.  Together they have united, crafting a nice blend of Melton’s power pop songwriting and a little bit of punk rock, all in line to prep a new 7″ that will hit later this summer on Southpaw Records. Keep an eye out here guys, and don’t listen to the people saying the city is dying, as bands this good just keep popping up.

The Return of Air Waves

airyRecently, I caught up with the owner of Western Vinyl at our Austin Record Flea, and he pretty much made my day; he told me he’d be putting out the new Air Waves LP.  What? New Air Waves? I pretty much burned through at least one copy of Dungeon Dots, and I fawned over the band when they played last year at Red 7.  The group, which is the vision of Nicole Schneit, crafts such effortless pop, filled with these airy harmonies that float off into world, connecting with every listener.  Their new album, Parting Glances, will be released on September 18th via WV. Just listen for the beautiful drop into the chorus on the track below.

Fruits and Flowers Readies Compilation

ffI first stumbled upon the label Fruits and Flowers via their work with Michael O. of Mantles semi-fame. Like a good fan does, I come back to their page every few weeks to see what’s new, which is how I discovered this interesting 3-way compilation they’re putting together.  The comp features 4 tracks each from Michael O., Piano Movers and The Reds, Pinks and Purples.  I’m really attached to the track they’ve shared from the latter, and I hope giving it a listen will get you excited for this release too.

Solemn Tune from Cape Snow

capesnowIf you’re a Sharon Van Etten fan, then you should take note, as Cape Snow looks to be the next big stunner from that genre.  The work is the combination of a long-distance friendship between Bree Scanlon and Dylan Metrano (Tiger Saw). Like the best work in this field, the voice of Bree is what shines the most; it sounds forlorn, but hits all the right notes.  Metrano’s instrumentation leaves plenty of room for Scanlon to shine too, never overdoing the work, never detracting from the song’ star. They’ll release their self-titled debut on July 31st via Burst and Bloom Records.

Demented Tape Pop from Creeping Pink

creepI’m a little bit scared of this Creeping Pink song honestly.  Sure, there’s this playful element in the way the core of the song goes, but the loops of drum explosions, placed atop varying levels of sonic accompaniment, eventually get warped into the track’s evolution.  The realm of safe pop dissipates, collapsing into this pulsating throb of electro-bedroom noise.  It’s an interesting spin on the modern trope, elevating the construction in a certain sense, and defying the rules.  It’ll be interesting to hear the entire Mirror Woods album; look for its release on July 13th via Castle Face Records.

Tam Vantage Now T.V.; Announces Debut Album

11402594_863094203762613_3487640641002569411_oI’ve hit you with several of the tunes of Tam Vantage, one of the former members of Pop Singles.  It looks like Tam’s rounded out the perfect line-up for his songs, and gone in to record the tracks for his forthcoming LP, Life in High Definition…doing it now as T.V.  The band’s latest single, “Do You Remember,” seems to hold true to the sounds of other Melbourne acts like Dick Diver or Twerps, but the recording (and the band for that matter) seem to have grander orchestration in mind.  They’ve added some solid piano backbone to the track, lifting it just a hint above Aussie guitar pop.  Look for this highly anticipated effort come September.
