Kissing Party Score Pop Hit

kp1The opening guitar lines of this track are misleading, to a certain degree.  It sounds like you might get something a little heavier, something along the line of modern emo revival.  But, when Kissing Party‘s Dierdre tosses in her vocals, it switches the track straight into pop mode.  The band quickly blasts through the two-minute track, sweetly singing its way into your listening for the weekend. It’s reminiscent of recent works by the likes of Standard Fare or Eternal Summers, bordering between indie rock and indiepop; it’s delicious. They’ll be releasing their new album, Looking back it was romantic but at the time I was suffocating, via Fleeting Youth Records on June 30th.

Jangle Punk? Ask Vundabar.

gwkPretty sure whoever created this genre was going to aim straight for my heart.  You’re going to combine punk and jangle? Yeah, I’m in.  It’s a pretty interesting sound combination, though to be sure, I’ve really grown into this Vundabar song due to it’s varying changes within the track. Plus, the vocal inflections are pretty addicting; I love a good drawn out vocal.  Another thing the band has going for it in this song is the length of the track; they’re allowed to construct different feelings and emotions throughout the tune’s four minutes. They’ll be releasing their album, Gawk, on their own Gawk Records on July 24th. Give it a listen.

Shimmering Indiepop from The Proctors

10616276_850893441590045_4372778612800772383_nI love the guitar sound on this track from The Proctors.  It’s got this crystalline quality, yet it definitely has faint hints of jangling about it.  Still, the song wouldn’t succeed if the vocals didn’t fit right inside the world crafted by the band; they’re not too high, nor too low, in the mix, as if everything is working in unison. The band’s last effort, Everlasting Light, was simply magical, but in this tune, I hear even greater things to come our way soon.  No word on exact release date, or title for the record, but you can be assured that indiepop fans are going to fall head over heels for anything the group put out.

Drifting Pop from Uncle Bobby

bobUpon pressing play on this new single from Uncle Bobby, I was immediately transferred to a semi-dream state, influenced by the opening moments, accentuated by the sitar in the background.  It’s an interesting tune in that I don’t really think there’s a precise genre that it fits into, though it definitely aligns itself with pop music.  There’s little tinges of psychedelia, but there’s also a bedroom pop aspect that really hits home with me.  It’s the first glimpse of the work of the multi-instrumentalist, who will be releasing a full EP later on this year.

Premiere: Static Daydream Blast New Single

staticWhy use the term blast, you ask? Please, press play. Immediately, you’ll be hit by a wall of squalling guitars from Static Daydream, echoing loudly in the caverns of your mind.  But, while your ears adjust, listen closely.  Vocals are soft, barely audible.  Then, the pop sensibility that’s been bubbling just beneath the tune’s surface pervades, and the wall of guitar noise is completely removed, making way for an electronic outro that serves as the perfect calming closure to this storm of a song. Saint Marie Records will be releasing the group’s self-titled debut in August; it’s perfect for those of you that love your shoegaze music loud and accessible.

Rat Columns Announce New EP + Video

I’ve really enjoyed Rat Columns work since the release of their last album, Leaf.  So, I’m excited that there’s something new coming out from the Australian camp, even though we’re really just getting an elongated version of a previously recorded track.  Still, watching this video, you can see (and hear) exactly why the band is quickly becoming one of the more revered acts around, especially here at the ATH offices. Plus, the flip side of their Fooling Around EP will have 3 new tracks, so you’re bound to hear something tasty.  It’ll get a July 31st via Blackest Ever Black.

Just Another Rad White Reaper Tune

whiteyWe’re less than a month away from the release of White Reaper‘s new record, and as we draw near, they wanted to offer up another song to get its hooks in you.  There’s a heavy-handed chugging guitar chord leading the tune along, but the eruption of the pop hook that serves as the chorus is destined to have people playing this tune all over the place. Looks like the band aim to take the space that seems vacated now that Surfer Blood aren’t as prominent. Arena rock built for small clubs. Look for White Reaper Does it Again via Polyvinyl on July 17th.

ATX Spotlight: Tamarron Release Dadrock

tammyOkay, don’t let that title mislead you, as Dadrock is the name of the new EP just released by local Austin band, Tamarron, who we’ve raved about before.  And no, it doesn’t sound like dad-rock at all; it only furthers their exploration into the realms of psychedelia.  Your ears should immediately gravitate towards the atmospheric wash, pushed on by a grinding organ that lurks in the background of standout track, “Cinnamon Skin, which I’ve got below.  You can grab your own copy of the band’s EP right HERE, for the NYOP…I suggest a nice donation.

Did You Listen to This New Teen Daze Track

teenyWhen Teen Daze decided to step out of his bedroom, I’m sure there were some worries.  How does one stay true to their sound whilst progressing and adding larger production? Jamison seems to have found the right balance with this first new single.  You can hear the stylistic trademarks of a person writing in their bedroom, but the harmonies in the vocals, on top of the varying layers of guitar and percussion really elevate the tune to a pop hit.  It’s just our first taste from the new work, and it’s available now via Paper Bag Records. Not a bad step up…not at all.
