ATX Spotlight: New Yuma Tune + Show Preview

11054385_1069905849688762_5689455370238310354_oLooks like this year’s going to be a great one for Yuma. The band has already released one new track, with this fresh number sure to stop you in your tracks.  “Loglo” is the name of the tune, and it’s likely to be one of the best pop tracks to come out of Austin this year.  You’ll hear a nice groove crafting a playful atmosphere, and the vocals add to that effect, making it the perfect jam for your pre-summer parties.  To celebrate the release of this new single, which you can grab HERE,  the band will be playing an incredible show at Blackheart on Saturday night.  Care Package (members of Borrisokane) opens the night, followed by Rose Selavy, Yuma and then Ramesh.  If you’re not planning on being at Levitation, this is the best possible show you can attend on Saturday night; we’re happy to be a part of it.

Really Enjoyed This Vows Tune

vowsThe first few minutes of splashing noise were a bit off-putting at first, but let this tune from Vows settle in on your ears.  You’ll find a casual bit of sunny pop bursting through your speakers, similar to what Of Montreal used to offer in their earliest days.  There’s an odd studio warble placed on the vocals, but if fits in quite nicely to the band’s sound on this track, as guitars cascade through the background.  The group will be releasing their new record, Soon Enough Love, on June 2nd via Section Sign Records.

We’re Getting Closer to New Jeremy Jay

JeremyJayLondonTreesOur affinity for Jeremy Jay has been no secret, and I’ve grown increasingly interested in his music this year as he’s been handing out little hints here and there about his various projects.  He’s recently released this new tune, and it appears to be on the album Invisible Foxx, though I’m not sure if that’s the actual album or the name of a new project.  Regardless, I love the dark approach he’s taken here; he’s washed the mix with a quiet dosage of synthesizer while his vocals hold your interest.  It looks like Domino Publishing has gotten their hands on the new music, so it should be released real soon…fingers crossed.

Perfect Indiepop from The Catenary Wires

CD72There’s two things at work here: one, Matinee Recordings is back at it this year and two, The Catenary Wires are made up of members of Talulah Gosh, Heavenly, Tender Trap, etc.  With the first, I’m extremely happy, as the label is one of my favorite purveyors of divine indie pop.  As to the second, I think the aforementioned bands make this track alone worthy of your time. I couldn’t think of a better way to begin my week than to listen to a track where the male and female vocals fit so well that your can’t help but feel yourself swoon. They’ll be releasing their Red Red Skies CD via the label in June.

Small Feet Hook Up with Barsuk Records

simoneI make no excuses for my love of really powerful pop music, even if it comes in the simplest of forms.  That’s exactly why I like listening to the music of Small Feet…the project of Sweden’s Simon Stalhamre. When you listen, you’ll probably be most attracted to Simon’s voice…it creates the emotion that I remember when I first listened to James Mercer (before he got boring), and perhaps a touch of Fleet Foxes in there too. Also, if you listen closely around the 3 minute mark, I swear you can hear an homage to Third Eye Blind. Barsuk will release From Far Away Everything Sounds Like the Ocean on August 7th, so pencil in a date for some pop music.

Fascinating New Daughn Gibson Tune

Daughn GibsonIt’s been interesting to watch the progression of Daughn Gibson‘s career.  He’s gone from a relatively unknown act we stumbled upon about five years ago to a powerful force to be reckoned with in the modern age.  His music this time around seemingly matches his intoxicating live performance; I love the noisy bust up that comes around the 2.5 minute mark of the track.  The song even closes with a softer approach that spins the tune in a different space as it comes to a close Press release says he’s worked a great deal on his lyrics for his new album Carnation, so I have a feeling you’re going to be in for a real treat when Sub Pop unleashes it on June 2nd.

Give A Listen to Whitewash’s New Tune

whiteyA lot of acts get labeled with the slacker-pop genre tag, and I’m not really sure exactly what it means, although I think it means that the band doesn’t seem to be trying too hard. That’s kind of a dick thing to say about a musician I reckon, but fuck it, Whitewash are one of the coolest “slacker” pop acts around.  Just take a listen at how the vocals are traded back and forth here, seemingly with no effort. It matches perfectly with the relaxed composition of the song itself. If you like the tune, look for Shibboleth on May 19th.

Fuck Yeah, More New Communions

front_digiMan, this Communions band has me excited for things to come.  The band blends some of that discordant dance music with 80s pop tropes.  It’s something that has the potential to carry on for a long time, especially considering that the oldest member of the band is only 21.  As of now, the tunes are good; they’re catchy, they show the spirit of the band.  Personally, I hope to see some growth, sonically, maybe taking some risks with the sound.  But, for now I’m hooked on the act, which makes their forthcoming self-titled EP quite intriguing; it’s available on June 2nd via Tough Love.

In Love with New Flesh World

fleshalmeshI love the forlorn vocals that open the latest single from Flesh World.  When it meets the darkened edges of the guitar sounds, it’s like a calling into the ghostly post-punk realm the band have created with this tune here.  Still, there’s an undercurrent that warms the ears of the listeners, especially around the 1.5 minute mark where the chant of “poolside boys” comes crashing in. If you enjoy some shredding cacophony to drown out the noisy typer next to your cubicle, then look for The Wild Animals in My Life via Iron Lung Records on June 2nd.

ATX Spotlight: Twin Bitches Do It Right

11174497_942951285737062_3480207812902951185_oBeen helping a friend put together a show this week over at Mohawk on Thursday night, and in doing so, I encountered a new band, Twin Bitches that’s really exciting.  Based on their two singles, the band has sort of that post-punk Constantines feeling to them, using jagged guitar chops to push forth the lyrics, which come across somewhere between a throaty growl and a gentle croon.  Musically, you can see similarities to other indie acts, but combined, it sounds like something wholly different. They’ll be playing with two of our favorite local acts, SLOW and Jonly Bonly…so come out, grab a drink, jam out and enjoy some of the finer rock n’ roll tunes in town. Doors are at 9, but you can always come hang out early.
