The Return of the Splits

splitterI always thought I was in the know for the Finnish rock n’ roll scene, though it’s clear I’ve still got some things to learn, as I haven’t been too acquainted with the Splits, though they’re set to release their second album via Dirtnap Records.  There’s a vicious opening, that some might even call brash.  But, don’t let that set you off, as there’s multiple vocal parts, balancing out the angst-ridden punk growl with a solid pop croon.  It’s an energetic tune, filled with fun times and attitude; look for II on April 21st.

Listen to This Dark Opus from Girls Names

girlsgirlsgirlsI’ve been way into Girls Names since they first hit the shores via Slumberland Records, and while they’ve changed their sound, their music has still been relatively compelling.  Enter the new chapter for the band, the result being an 11 minute exploration into the space where bands may soon take their post-rock approach.  The track opens with digitalized foreboding before the settles into it’s circular guitar work, pushed forward by the drum work.  Don’t be worried, as the band have disguised their pop-centric leanings beneath carefully crafted swells of guitar. Look for this new Zero Triptych 12″ via Tough Love Records on May 11th.

ATX Spotlight: Introducing Lunar Gold

moJason Morris has spent the last several years plying his trade in The Clouds are Ghosts, but he felt the calling to complete something entirely on his own, taking a softer and more broad approach to his songwriting.  There’s layers upon layers added to his work as Lunar Gold, crafting a denser sound that broods and flows forth…similar to artists like Other Lives or Efterklang.  For now, just revel in a new project on the scene; enjoy his first single with this project, and catch him live on April 4th at Mohawk.

ATX Spotlight: New Shawn David McMillen

sdm12XU had a solid day yesterday with some national press for Uniform (which you can read about HERE), but quietly they also unleashed this striking new tune from Shawn David McMillen.  It’s nearly six minutes of sprawled out electric roots rock, reveling in the soul of Texas summer nights.  One would think that it’s lack of brevity would make repeated listens difficult, but there’s a spirit in this song that’s undeniable, which inevitably forced me to press play at least a half-dozen times before I even touched this post.  It doesn’t hurt that his new album On the Clock with JJ & Mitch is a representation of his work with local heavy-hitters JJ Ruiz and Mitch Frazier (from such acts as Church Shoes & Trustees).  Look for the album on April 28th, if you’re into buying music.

Spaced Out Psychedelia from King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard

kglwWant to take a psychedelic trip? Me too, and we’re probably better off if we listen to King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard while we’re at it.  The band’s latest single has this spaced out warp to the recording, which is really intriguing to my ears.  But, that being said, there’s still some California pop polish lurking beneath, heralding the sunny sounds whilst spinning them in a warbled mess of psych rock.  It’s just more promising sounds from the Aussies, who will be releasing a four-song Quarters LP (two tracks per side I reckon); Castle Face Records has the release set for May 11th.

Really Enjoying This New Iles Song

ilesFrom the second I clicked on this new Iles tune, I figured it was going offer me something in the way of The Lodger; it’s got that same high energy high step guitar line, creating a stomp of the feet.  Then the vocals enter carrying the tune off into a dreamier realm; it creates a rad little juxtaposition, filled with slow melodies and high energy.  This is the lead single off of the album titled Apartments, which should be out this Spring via Forged Artifacts.

Welcome Return for Gim Kordon

gimmykiblerIt’s been over a year since Gim Kordon released their last record, and I’m definitely stoked to hear the entirety of their new 7″, Vielakin On Ikava.  While the band chooses to work in their native Finnish tongue, the crisp guitar work and the steady drum work provide a nostalgic turn to classic alternative guitar rock.  This is hopefully just a glimpse of greater things to come, with the band hard at work with their friends at Soliti Music to bring you something explosive.  If you’re lucky, you might be able to grab this limited release on April 18th.

Turn to Crime, Again!

ttcOkay, so maybe we’ve been all about Turn to Crime, but I think with their latest single, they fully deserve our attention here.  For me, this band has some sonic similarities to the work of my fave, the Walkmen; it uses a similar style working with the negative space…and there’s just a slight hint of Hambone in the vocals.  It doesn’t hurt that the band are also showing some diversity in their work, which bodes well for their forthcoming album, Actions.  Look to pick up the record on April 28th via Mugg & Bopp.

Digging This New Tune from Baby Birds Don’t Drink Milk

bbddmI can’t tell if I should label this tune as an instrumental or not.  I mean, there’s technically vocals, but they come in the form of “oohs” being used as an instrument behind the softened jangle of the ringing guitars.  Sure, there’s no lyrical content per se, but I was still able to find some sort of emotional pull in it that encouraged me to share it with you.  After a hiatus, the BBDDM is back at it with this new mini album, titled Kill the Fuzz, which is being released by Fire Talk Records on April 21st; it’s definitely something to keep an eye on, as this band has been underground for too long.

Ancient River Prepare New Music

ariverWhen you read that an artist was present at the Austin Psych Fest, thoughts can be misleading, perhaps explaining the rebranding as Levitation Fest.  Ancient River remind me of how much that sound can influence, yet also expand beyond those boundaries, especially with their new six minute opus.  The songs hazy and plodding, quietly building on this barely audible little melody. It’s really something to experience, finding yourself weaving our ears in and out of this tune.  You can grab the Keeper of the Dawn on April 14th courtesy of Summer Moon.
