Thrilled By Los Angeles Police Department

551494_904732099561401_6340773065914297492_nRyan Pollie has gotten a lot of love this week for his project, Los Angeles Police Department; I’m just going to have to jump on that train, as it fits in perfectly with my statement of singer-songwriters stretching the boundaries a bit.  For the most part, the structures are the same, but like my favorites (Jeremy Jay), there’s slight little elements being added to really propel the song in interesting directions. There’s the effect on the guitar and the vocals, which may not seem like too much, but it’s just a slight push that makes the work stand out beyond most of Ryan’s peers.  You’ll find this tune on a new 7″ coming out February 24th via Fat Possum.

Hayden Is the Canadian Beck

canadaHave you not listened to Hayden before? Well, you’re going to have to do some hunting down, as the man’s released dozens of albums, all changing shapes and sounds, though consistently relying upon the strength of his voice.  It appears on this outing he’s going to take on the melancholy vibes of the world, using hints of Americana, though on that grader scale many of us adore.  He’s titled the newest release Hey Love, and it’s getting into stores courtesy of Arts and Crafts (3/24).  Put your pop song away and get swept away in this emotive number.

Black Lizard Ready 2nd LP

blackAt this point in the history, albeit a short one, I’m not really sure what to expect from Black Lizard.  The band changes directions, though they’ve always flirted with a darkened tint that’s really kept me enraptured.  Listening to their latest single from the forthcoming Solarize, it sounds as if they’ve taken the old formula of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, or even JAMC, and made it entirely their own.  That’s what I love about the group: no matter what they do, they own it, giving it their all for the betterment of our experience.  Check out a video for the new single HERE. The LP will be released by Soliti this Spring.

Divers Rock New Single

diveredI’m really hooked on Divers at the moment.  They’re not breaking barriers down, but they’re executing things so well that I can’t deny them some time on my daily playlist.  This latest single, has a breathy quality to the core part of the vocals, though they’re unleashed powerfully as the song progresses.  Sometimes really good pop music manages to make the world feel just right, and that’s precisely the vibe I’m feeling here from this Portland outfit.  Grab their debut Hello Hello on February 17th via Partydamage and Rumbletowne.

ATX Show Spotlight: Deep Cuts + Shivery Shakes @ Cheer Ups (1/29)

showIt’s that time of year, when things start to pick up across town as we warm up to SXSW.  There’s a great deal of shows this week, but I’d like to encourage you all to hit up Cheer Up Charlies to catch some local Texas acts that I guarantee will bring joy to your life.  You’ve got the impressive Deep Cuts folks from Houston, who are growing increasingly popular.  Shivery Shakes, who released their Three Waves and a Shake LP on ATH Records, will help keep your spirits up.  Plus Modrag and Casual Strangers intend to get you there early, as they’re both extremely worthy of your attendance.  There’s no cover and the show starts at 9 PM.  Come enjoy the weather and the good vibes.

Evans the Death Push The Noise Up

evenIn the past, I think the music of Evans the Death has had an element of safety to it; it’s not that I don’t appreciate that…by any means. But the instant this guitars feedback in this new single, it was the instant I realized that these youngsters are branching out in directions I didn’t quite expect…though it’s very much welcomed. It’ll be nice to see a young group grow up, sonically before our eyes. There’s this oddity to Katherine’s voice too, not in an off-putting direction, but in the tonality that really allows her vocal performance to hold the song together.  It’s another exciting reason to look forward to the band’s new LP, Expect Delays…being issued by Slumberland and  Fortuna Pop on March 10th.

In Tall Buildings Sounds Better and Better

divrEvery time I hear one of the tracks from In Tall Buildings I have to take a step back.  There’s something striking in the fragility that’s present in the music crafted by Erik Hall over the last four years. But, while the folk aspect is present throughout the entirety of this song, there’s some manipulated tape in there too, causing a change in the song’s balance; I think it’s one of the moments that really makes Hall’s music so intoxicating. His new LP, Driver, will be released on February 17th via Western Vinyl, so you’ve got a few weeks to prepare yourself for this journey.

Lush Electro-Pop from OOFJ

ringthealarmI’m going to always pronounce OOFJ as Uf-J! I think it adds a bit of emphasis to their sound, which may or may not always be needed.  For instance, on their latest single, the lush arrangements that move through the song’s first few moments are pretty restrained, pulled back as if awaiting the electronic pulse that will soon enter.  It’s like a combination of movie soundtrack bombast butting heads against dance floor sensibilities; not a bad way to approach things in my opinion. They’ll be releasing their new album, Acute Feast, via Ring the Alarm on April 21st.

Another Tam Vantage Tune to Make Your Day Better

a1326028043_2Just before the holiday break and year-end lists I wrote a short note about Tam Vantage, who used to be part of Pop Singles (sorely missed). But, I got carried away with getting back to work and reading all those arbitrary lists, so I missed when he released another great single just before the year ended.  So, why not make your Monday by sharing this tune with you.  It’s a really subtle pop tune, slightly revolving around a melancholy tone that is being offset by the Australian perfected jangle in the guitars.  Just one of the reasons I love this sound.

Yeah, I Dig This Gengahr Tune

unnamedMan, looks like I’m all over the place today; I think I’m okay with that. This tune from Gengahr rolled out late last week, and I didn’t get a chance to really get into it until the sun parted the clouds here in Austin.  The MGMT nod has already been given, but that’s mostly due to the vocals.  I’m listening to the bass line quite a bit, not to mention that cascading guitar part that knifes its way through the middle of the track.  It’s just one of those tracks that makes you feel pretty good inside, so why not give others a chance to hear that too? Look for their She’s a Witch EP on Transgressive Records in March.
