Tokoloshe Share Toxins Single

Don’t be fooled by the early strum on the acoustic guitar, as this new track from Tokoloshe has so much more to offer you; it goes beyond mere folk and embraces a slowcore sentiment that hits with a sobering blast. There’s such an expansiveness to the tune, like you can fill in the details with your own brain, suspending the musical reality as its presented, which I suppose is what the group was after. Stay tune when they get to the second verse, as you get another vocalist supporting the first, and that overlapping gives it this sort of outlier pop vibe that has me playing this one over and over.

Day Friend Drop New Single + Release Show (4/4) at 13th Floor

Thanks to my friend Mark during the planning stages of our annual ATH vs SOTO show, he turned me on to one of our new favorite Austin outfits, Day Friend. The band have graciously allowed us to share their brand new single before it’s proper release next Friday! I love the way they set this whole Double AA side up; the first side is a love letter from a parasite to its host, while the flip side has the host giving a big fuck you to said parasite. You can even hear the dynamism in the way they approach the songwriting, with Part 1 embracing a more melodic nature, still angular but with the softer side one associates with a love letter. Turn it over and there’s nothing kind being offered, with a powerful blast of rebellion coming from the host (we could all use a lot more rebellion right now!); this half also features a huge ripping breakdown, with the group’s musicianship on full display. One of the more exciting acts in town at the moment; they’ll celebrate the release of their new single at the 13th Floor, next Friday with Exotic Fruitica and Feedr.

Avery Friedman Shares Another Single

If you haven’t been paying attention, you’re going to want to keep an eye on Avery Friedman. She’s been circling the music world, yet New Thing is her first foray into establishing her own voice, exploring her “pain, growth, and sexuality.” The title track has this stellar guitar sound, it feels distorted, yet somehow creeps across the mix like it’s being lightly strummed. Friedman carefully walks her voice across too, like an angelic little whisper that drifts in and out of your consciousness. Stepping into the limelight shouldn’t be a difficult task, if Avery is walking out into the world with songs this strong in her pocket. New Thing will be out on April 18th via Audio Antihero.

Egentid Release Sail On EP

Swedish outfit Egentid release their new Sail On EP today, and it’s a special bit of pastoral folk that seems perfectly fitting for the raining morning. The songs on the EP are filled with gentle harmonies and arrangements that carry light instrumentation into sweeping emotions. I got caught on the track below, with really high vocal tones on the chorus that completely had me wrapped up; the light acoustic strum also fits the mold for easing your way into the morning. It’s going to be a long weekend, so immerse yourself in the lightness ready to wrap you up in its stunning warmth. The whole of the EP can be streamed HERE.

JAWNY Drops Brand New Single

Musically, my brain is all over the map today, and I’m totally cool with that, as that’s what the site’s for, right? Well, some rock, some softer stuff, and now this fantastic new pop tune from JAWNY. The artist has been stretching himself artistically, working on endeavors that expand outside of the music spectrum, and all of that is bleeding into the new single. There’s this sort of rhythmic pulse in here that kind of bobs and weaves between each delivered line, kind of matching the sort of pop energy from that Methyl Ethel/Stella Donnelly collaboration a few years back. It brings out this energy that’s part hook and part slow groove, and you can’t deny the natural joy provided by the song’s constant push and pull, pushing your body to let loose and just embrace the day.

Why Bother Announce You Are Part of the Experiment EP + Share Listen

After churning out a couple of killer LPs last year, Iowa’s Why Bother, the group are set to return with a brand new EP titled You Are Part of the Experiment. We’re pleased to bring you the opening track from the record, but be forewarned, excessive volume is likely to blow through your speakers. Listeners will be treated to some audio samples, and then suddenly, you’re hit with a barrage of buzzsaw guitars; they’re gritty and blown out, giving off the vibe that you’re being chased through the hallways of some insane asylum. Vocals are delivered in a rather disaffected manner; the kind where each lyric is spoken as a matter of fact, but the melodic nature pokes its head out from time to time, like when the line of “I don’t care/I’m not going to listen anymore” is followed by a few syllabic harmonies. If you love to let your speakers live on the edge, turn this one up, then grab the EP from Feel It Records before the April 18th release date!

Dumb Things Share Outta Time Track

In a little over one wee, my current favorite Aussie’s, Dumb Things, will release their latest album, Self Help. They’ve been teasing us since the record’s announcement, and we’ve got one final single to enjoy before we double down and play the album on repeat for weeks. “Outta Time” caught my ear at first because of the percussive element on this track; it’s quick and snappy, whipping the song into a frenzy, despite the rest of the group trying to pull back on the reigns. For me, that matched up with the refrain “feels like I’m running outta time” that courses through the song’s entirety, and how often do you get to say the lyrics and rhythm section match up? Then of course, there’s overlapping harmonies and the group’s affinity for crafting melodic magic, so again, Self Help is out next Friday and you’re going to need to listen!

The Slashes Share War Candy Single

San Diego’s The Slashes gave me a rush of blood to the head with this new single. Guitars race right into your ear, ripping up these angular notes that make you twirl and stop the floor all at once. Everything feels frantic and dangerous, but the vocals do their part to offset that vibe, teasing a bit of solace amidst the swirling textures. Those vocal tones are so heavy that they manage to weigh down the guitar and drums, so it creates this really intoxicating effect as you can feel both pieces working in contrast to one another. Crank it up and fall for this ripper.

Pachyman Drops Another New Single

New Adrian Quesada and new Pachyman? Clearly, I’m going to be operating with the world’s most chilled vibe today, especially as I sink into this Pachyman jam. He’s combining his love of dub and the chugging rhythm of the guitar with a bit of space-age industry. His vocal samples here are perfect, like little faint echoes you might hear bouncing down the hallways from afar. And sure, those little dub grooves rip, but I love the little synthetic notes and how they take the style and make it feel remarkably fresh. Then you hook it with the video where all you get is smiles, and I can absolutely not turn this one off! Another Place will be out on ATO Records on May 23rd.

Pleased to Meet You: Tee Templeton

It’s seems a rarity that a 66-year-old artist breaks through the noise to land with a debut, but Tee Templeton is definitely someone worth encountering today. He spent his life with his songwriting waiting patiently on the sidelines while he attended to his career and other life endeavors, but has now come back with his second single that’s really stuck inside my head. At first, the intricate opening took me aback, but as soon as the tune hits the 30 second mark, the tune completely shifts into Bolan/Bowie territory. I, of course, loved that, but those similarities move into other pop territories as the arrangement layers in strings that buoy the entirety of the track. Really mesmerized by this song.
