The Electric Pop Group Return with Great Indiepop

980571_10151702506627098_745953122_oIt’s been almost five years since we’ve heard anything new coming from Sweden’s the Electric Pop Group, but dammit if they aren’t aiming to wrap up our year with some delicious indiepop.  It’s the classic sort, at least on this song, with jangling guitars pushing the melodies to the max, then kicking out some warmth in the vocal aspect.  This song is from the group’s new record, Integration, which will see a release early next year courtesy of the ever-reliable Matinee Recordings.

Have You Heard H Hawkline

hawkSometimes you get in those ruts where you post the same thing over and over, and it just wears you out.  You love it, but you need something that sounds refreshing, which is why I love this new tune from H Hawkline.  Sure, there’s some similarities to bits of modern pop, with the jagged guitar chops and the song’s construction, but overall, I just felt like the vocals took this song someplace I hadn’t really been spending time with lately.  His new album, In the Pink of Condition, will be released on February 2nd via Heavenly Recordings.

Let’s Dance With Pale Blue

mikesThe music of Mike Simonetti most likely has followers due to his work with Johnny Jewel and the duo’s After Dark project, but he’s since stepped away from Italians Do It Better to being a new project under the moniker Pale Blue.  The tune below still draws from the dance floor, and it’s exuberance during the latter half definitely draws me into the song.  His new project will release the album, The Past We Leave Behind, via his new label 2MR and Captured Tracks, so be on the lookout for it in April…for now, just dance.

Soft Side of Seagulls

Post-video picWe’ve gotta offer up two sides of our site, balancing out our love for rocking hits with our love for a great pop song.  Thus, we bring you the latest single from Seagulls, who’ve graced these pages previously.  There’s a consistent rising and falling throughout the entirety of the song, with the rise meeting up with a more pronounced sound, as opposed to the soft underbelly that holds the song in place.  Those of you searching for something of this sort will find a nice dosage of pop that keeps you coming back for more when you pick up their album, Great Pine, on February 3rd.

Moon Duo Return with New Album

moonsAs we continue our look towards 2015, there’s one thing that’s for sure, this Moon Duo LP is going to be a hot commodity.  The song has a brooding tone, though it’s driven by a more forceful approach to songwriting than what we’ve heard from the group before.  Perhaps the only thing holding the track back is its brevity; I felt like there was at least 30 more seconds of rock to go.  This tune will appear on Side A of a 7″ that’s being slid into every copy of Shadow of the Sun, which will be in stores on March 3rd courtesy of Sacred Bones Records.

Soft Number from Edwyn Collins

Edwyn CollinsI think I’d probably put Edwyn Collins in my Top 5 of all time songwriters.  His work with Orange Juice impacted a lot of my listening habits, past and present. So, his 2005 struggles with multiple strokes was quite sad, but listening to his road back has really been something quite special.  This year, a documentary came to light called The Possibilities are Endless, concerning Edwyn’s road back.  He’s been fortunate enough to be able to write music again, thus his ability to craft this tune, which is part of the soundtrack to the documentary; it’s available via AED.

Sorry I Missed This: Corners

kornerAgain, the end of the year brings to your attention a lot of great hits, and I was lucky to catch this on the ever changing line-up that is Burger Records.  Corners are this sort of synth-glam-post-punk phenomenon coming out of that LA place, and what they’re creating is really something.  There’s a bit of hipness to it, but there’s also this vibe that they could really give a fuck…making for a great listen.  Their LP Maxed Out on Distractions is out now courtesy of the above mentioned folks, as well as Lolipop Records. The jam below is the one I keep gravitating towards the mostest.

Enjoy Some Crepes…the band

creepsThis song from Crepes is something really special for you on a Tuesday. If it helps grab your attention, Mikey Young of Total Control and Eddy Current Suppression Ring handled the mastering on the band’s new work…and you know that guy’s no slouch.  But, similar Melbourne acts, there’s a different side of pop coming from these guys, offering a slowly unfolding picture that brings a bright bouncing harmony to the chorus.  Right now they’re just starting to catch on, but things will really take off when their debut EP is released in early 2015…says I.

Brooding Pop from Jasia

jaziaAs the year comes to a close, I’m going back and getting into some things that I’ve seen on other lists or just songs that were somehow sliding under our radar.  This Jasia tune was one that I dug when it popped up, but for some reason it fell hidden in my emails. This song is this electronic pop composition that builds and builds, though it never quite erupts in euphoria. Instead, the subtleties of the pop sensibility billow for its entirety, which is quite an enjoying piece of work. Look for more work from this kid as 2015 kicks on.

New Music from King of Cats

working outWhy does the year have to end? There still seems like there’s great tunes to be had, such as this tune from King of Cats. This track starts our innocently enough, but when the guitar breakdown comes in I find myself hooked every time, even when I know what’s coming. The vocals get a touch harsh from Max Levy at some points, but that huge riff draws me back in to the tune. The band’s debut album, Working Out, is coming out soon from Art Reeks, a new collaborative label by some folks over in the UK.  Sometimes a good riff just makes everything worth it.
