Fresh Tune from Alex G

agOne of the releases I really took a liking too this year was DSU, the latest LP from Alex G.  He’s been sort of an underground sensation, winning over fans across the globe with his really personal touch to his songwriting.  This track probably isn’t as new as I’d like, as it was recorded for DSU, though it didn’t make the final cut for the album.  Still, even in its brevity you can hear why Alex has become such a sensation in many circles.  If this is what you like, then be sure to go and collect all his work, including that great LP from earlier this year.

Fuzzy Rocker from Sun Voyager

voyagesJust a few weeks ago I dropped a tune from Sun Voyager in regards to their forthcoming split with Greasy Hearts, but they’ve just unleashed another new tune for a label comp that’s coming your way soon.  This track is the perfect blow-your-hair-back psych rock that makes for great liver performances; it’s got this sludgy deep riff that rattles your soul, while the vocals wobble in atmospheric fashion atop it all.  This is for fans that like the heavier side of psych rock…and really, just those that want to rock on a Monday.

Perfect Indiepop from Pale Lights

paleIt’s a bummer that I opted to take most of last week off, as if I hadn’t, you’d have had this Pale Lights single spinning in your head throughout your holiday week, or your black Friday enslavement.  Regardless, you’re now going to spend the next 20-30 minutes playing these two songs over and over again.  It’s remarkable how quickly this band can add to their already strong catalog, having released the much needed  Before There Were Pictures earlier this year. I don’t know which of the two tracks is better here, so you best listen to them both.  Hoping to see this on a vinyl release, but for now it’s just a digital single you’ll want to get your hands on as soon as possible.

Another Alex Calder Tune

alMan, this track would have been perfect this last weekend full of rain, but it’s still a great little tune.  Alex Calder‘s new tune has him slowly moving forward with some densely coated vocals, while the guitar beneath struggles to stay in tune.  It’s a dreamy track, which offers you a glimpse at the softer side of Calder’s writing, with the lyrical content taking less of a focus than the emotional appeal of the instrumentation.  His new LP, Strange Dreams, will be released on January 20th via Captured Tracks…starting off the year in what he hope is an excellent way.

New Music from Matthew Melton

140110-warm-sodaMatthew Melton of Bare Wires and Warm Soda fame, and currently of Austin, Tx, has made great power pop records, no matter what band he’s using.  But, he’s got a pile of recordings that couldn’t quite fit into those acts, so he’s releasing another solo record with Southpaw Records.  Our first listen to this work shows Melton displaying much of the same style he’s come to be known for, wrapping up his vocals in a guitar sound that walks the line between bedroom and garage rock.  This new effort is titled Outside of Paradise, and you can only grab it from the label or from Matthew himself.

Have Some Fun with Yetis

yeddiI wanna keep you energized and looking towards a great relaxing, so I’ve got to keep our energy levels up around here, which is why I bring you yet another pop tune; this time we’ll be listening to Yetis.  The Pennsylvania group has employed their understanding of pop songwriting to grab you by the seat of your pants and get you up dancing with friends.  There’s hints of sunny Cali, which is implied by the lyrics, but those harmonies had to originate somewhere, right?  This is just a fun track to spin when the coffee (or tea) runs dry.

It’s Been Awhile, Elvis Perkins

elvezHas it really been five years since we last heard new music from Elvis Perkins?  I’ll excuse the writer, as he’s not been graced with the easiest of lives, but I definitely missed his songwriting.  I love the stripped down effect that initially carries this song through, though I could easily do without some of the extemporaneous noises that fill its final seconds.  Still, there’s a familiarity and warmth in voice that’s always made his songs rewarding for listeners. He’s got a new effort called I Aubade, which comes out on February 24th via MIR Records.

New Split from Joyce Manor and Toys That Kill

borsSome bands just get a bad rap, and you know what, shame on me.  I always lumped Joyce Manor, and Toys That Kill for that matter, in that late-wave emo punk genre.  I was a second wave emo kid, so I really just discarded it by and large, but I just got in their new split for Recess Records, and these are just some really good rocking tunes.  Honestly, I don’t even know if I’d got so far as to call them punk rock; the TTK tune almost sounds like a bar band approach to the garage stylings of Jay Reatard.  Enough about me and my half-ass assumptions; stream these two jams.

The Delphines Now Named No/No + New EP

dragEarlier this year I wrote about a discovery that really excited me, the Delphines.  Sadly, that group is no more; they had some line-up changes, namely in the vocal/lyricist department. Now the group, with new member Cat Ries are going by No/No, but the music they’re crafting is every bit as exciting as the old act, if not more so.  You’ll still hear indiepop tropes, though it seems to be spun in a darker manner, which adds another layer that should quickly gain the group a nice following. Help the band out by donating some funds when you grab the Drag EP from them on HERE.

Playful Pop from Seagulls

gullsThere’s a certain little genre that perfectly wraps hints of garage and surf rock, spins them in a washer with traditional pop structures, and spits out great tunes.  It’s the sort of music that made me love our boys Shivery Shakes, but now I’d like you to take a nice listen to Seagulls. The band have been hard at work in a remote cabin, trying to make sure their debut is perfect.  If you listen to this track, you’re bound to think, like me, that the group is onto something special,which should make for a great listen when Great Pine is released on February 3rd via Yellow K Records.
