Another Listen to New Cult of Youth

cultThe last track I heard from Cult of Youth saw the band exploring some new territory, but their latest single has them revisiting their own hallowed ground.  This song opens with a strummed guitar ringing, as if they’re creating this huge pop sphere that’s waiting to explode. However, Sean Ragon’s darkened vocal touch takes away from that world, offering a more balance approach.  For me, I’m stuck on the lyrics and the emotional appeal of the musical construction, so I’ll be picking up the band’s new effort, Final Days, when its released by Sacred Bones on November 11th.

Still In Love with Cool Ghouls

coolzI can’t explain to you how much I’m anticipating the newest release from Cool Ghouls.  As the weather finally cools down in Austin (then heats back up), I’m thirsting for the perfect tunes for my backyard party playlist.  You know the sort, where the songs are going to grab the attention of a few of your friends, but the rest will let it fade into the background.  Still, it’ll start a conversation about great records, and I’m thinking that this next opus, A Swirling Fire Burning Through the Rye, will be just that conversation starter.  It’s got a drape of psychedelia atop a Brian Wilson harmony village…sounds perfect.  Look for the release from Empty Cellar on November 11th.

Quieted Folk from Angelo De Augustine

spiralzIt’s been years, and I hate to even bring it up, but where’s the next Elliot Smith in this world? If I’m going to throw a name into the hat, it might just be Angelo de Augustine.  I’m not saying that they sound exactly alike, as there’s no fun in that, but there are similarities in the recordings and the intimacy.  There’s a soft touch that makes its way to your heart, and few artists can pull that off.  I know my hopes are high here, but there’s a special place in my heart reserved for music of this sort, so I’m eager to see what the entirety of his Spirals of Silence LP sounds like.  Take a quiet spin today, and pick up the album on November 18th.

Hello There Step-Panther

stepI ran across Step-Panther a few weeks back, and dammit if BV didn’t beat me to posting about the group.  On the first few seconds the latest single from the Aussie act has a tendency to dwell in the realm of modern emo (I know that will scare some folks), but I implore you to listen on, as they near the perfect jangle pop that our friends in Literature have created as of late.  It’s infectious and begging to be played over and over again on your speakers.  Listen to this track all day and see if you can grab the group’s Strange But Nice LP while you’re at it.

Brand New Album from Proto Idiot

protoEver since I first heard Proto Idiot via his Trouble In Mind 7″ I’ve been hooked on the sound he’s been creating.  He’s changed things up here and there, but there’s still a very elemental bit of punk rock that comes through your speakers when you press play.  There’s a tinge of garage rock, but things are definitely of the more refined sort; I might even hear a bit of J Reatard in the vocals on this new album, Also Known As.  If you’re looking for something to stream today at work, give yourself a few spins with this release; you’ll be enjoying the next 20 something minutes of your life.

Something Different ft. London O’ Connor

londonIt’s always been hard for me to really indulge in my friend’s hip-hop interests. There’s just never been something that really sucked me in to that world.  Sure, I can appreciate the more poetic styles, but today I’ve been hooked on something a bit different, coming from London O’Connor.  This tune from the producer has him rapping over various parts, but there’s this huge swell of pop construction that operates as the chorus; that’s precisely the piece that sold me on this track.  It’s almost like late LCD Soundsytem with your little brother rapping in and out. He also created a video game for you to play with the song; you can check that out HERE.

You Want More from Lazyeyes? You Got It!

lazeWasn’t it just last week I was writing about Lazyeyes? Well, I’m back again with the next single from the band.  It’s another track you can turn up as you drive down the highway at night, wind behind your back.  I’m really digging the way the vocals were recorded for this track; it’s got this distant feeling, like an old friend is singing at me from a late night dream.  The directness of the band’s songwriting really shines through, making it inevitable that you’ll find yourself hooked on the group’s sound.  Look for their New Year EP rather soon.

New Music from Alex Calder

alexUsually, you throw around the words Mac DeMarco collaborator and you’ll have hordes of instant fans.  But, while I can easily see myself jumping in that group without hesitancy, it’s nice to know that the music of Mac’s friend Alex Calder is actually backing up my rush to judgement.  He’s got a brand new record (his second) coming out on Captured Tracks, and this first single is quite the listen. It starts off seemingly paying homage to some Oceanic guitar vibes, then cools it down with a darkened vocal drawl that works over some angular guitar bits…then joyously erupts during the chorus.  DeMarco or not, this is just a good song; look for Alex’s album, Strange Dreams next January.

Get a LIFE

LIFEOkay. I really meant to throw the word digital single in there; I promise.  LIFE is a UK act that’s bracing for their invasion of the US, this week releasing their first single Stateside this week.  I’m going to post both the songs from the single, as I think they embrace two sides of a young band.  One, offers an up beat number that recalls that one good song from The Vaccines; it’s immediately catchy with a huge sound for pop fans.  The flip side of the coin is a grittier track that has more of a guitar pop feel; it’s probably more ambitious in construction than the other tune, so it’s my pick of the two, though I’m enjoying both.  Get ready to get a LIFE.

Cool Swagger from Public Access T.V.

patvAs soon as I pressed play, I got hooked on this track.  It reminds me of this band The Realistics that went largely unnoticed in the early 00s. They combined some of the Stones-esque swagger, but fused it with huge Lizzy-type hooks.  That’s what I get from Public Access TV; they unite these elements, then hide them a bit beneath some hip fuzz.  There’s no word on a completed album, but with sounds this huge, it’s just a matter of time before the group is everyone’s favorite new band.  The cool kids will like it, the nerds will like it and most importantly, you will like it.
