Furrow is my Jam

10575140_727232720682711_5461754013417150931_oUgh. I’m really in a rock n’ roll mood as of late.  I’m just tired of the indie rock tropes, so I just want something I can turn up really loud…today it just happens to be Furrow.  The UK act have recently released their West Felton LP via Bleeding Gold Records, and this tune is probably one of my favorites.  Starting slow, it picks up pretty quickly with this fuzzy riff and bouncing drum beat; vocals are shouted our way with a bit of ferocity. It’s simple in the grand scheme of things, but often those are the things that blow me away the most.  Give this a whirl folks.

Austin Spotlight: New Single from Genuine Leather

genwineThe last we heard from Genuine Leather was the group’s second album, Losers, but they’re back today with a crisp bit of guitar pop to help make your day.  If, like me, you love a good bit of guitar work, then this is going to be the perfect song for you.  They’re definitely  nostalgically leaning riffs, with a bit of crunch working to aid the hook in the vocal chorus.  There’s no word yet as to whether this single is a one-off or if it’s prepping for the group’s next release…expect us to keep you updated on that front in the near future.

Austin Spotlight: Flesh Lights Ready New LP

fleshlightsThe last time I jammed to Flesh Lights, I felt like the band was offering some gritty punk rock.  That grittiness is still apparent in the sounds they’re creating, but on their latest single it sounds like they’ve upped the power pop and hooks.  I’m not going to lie; I was floored by this single right off the bat; it’s got everything you need; you can jam it loud, you can rip off your own guitar solo and every lyric is clean enough to sing along to at the top of your lungs.  With songs like these in their repertoire, it only makes sense that the end of 2014 and beyond should belong to the group.  Look for their latest LP, Free Yourself, in stores on November 4th via 12XU Records.

Diarrhea Planet Jump Back In with New EP

NEW DP BLOG HEADEREveryone’s favorite guitar band, Diarrhea Planet, is back at it (and by guitar band I mean that they have four guitars).  But, despite all those instruments, this new single seems pretty simplistic, aside from some crazy soloing work at the end of the tune.  It’s interesting though, as their earlier work bore the mark of a rock n’ roll band, but this song has a large “emo” presence to it (maybe even a hint of Dragonforce).  The tune is just a brief sample, so we’ll see what else they have up their sleeves when Infinity Cat release their Aliens in the Outfield EP on November 18th.

Nostalgic Track from Kittyhawk

KITTYHAWK-Promo-copyTypically, if someone names drop a 90s emo band as a reference point, I’ll probably listen to it, but will move on in my listening.  But, something today encouraged me to spend some time with Kittyhawk‘s new tune…I’ll admit it was a nod to Rainer Maria (who hold a special place in my heart).  The guitars on this song definitely have that emo-ish nod, though that sound’s pretty commonplace nowadays.  Still, there’s nothing wrong with looking back as long as your sound’s going forward, and I feel as if the group still has a lot to offer modern listeners.  We’ll get a more in depth look when the group release their debut, Hello Again, later this year.

Austin Spotlight: Boy + Kite Prep Premiere New Song

Boy plus Kite BWBoy + Kite have been on our radar for some time, though tragedy unfortunately struck the band, forcing them into a temporarily hiatus.  This new EP, and definitely this new single, should propel them into the consciousness of Austin music fans, and hopefully beyond.  I was drawn to the darkness that came with the subtle vocals at the beginning of the tune, but the hook in the chorus is what ultimately sold me on the track.  It offers a nice dosage of pop that’s brightened by its immediate contrast to the song’s softer moments. They’ll be releasing their Blueprint EP on October 21st, followed by greater things we expect to hear in the future.

Talk in Tongues Ready 7″

titI love the birth of new bands, like that of Talk in Tongues.  I’m into it because I’m a fan of progression, seeing where an artist or group goes from one point to another.  It’ll be really interesting to see where this act goes, as they’re just readying their first 7″ for Fairfax Recordings. For a first single, it’s pretty spot on, sonically.  The drums sound great, and I love the warmth of the vocals.  But, what I’m hearing from the guitars has me curious as to the group’s next steps, as they walk a line between dream pop and psychedelia.  For now, just enjoy yourself this little number, and grab the 7″ on November 25th.

My Jam of the Week: Arp

arpWent to the record store and picked up some sweet jams this week: Growlers, Rat Columns, So Cow and then I also got the new Arp.  Sure, it’s an EP, but man, there’s some really great gems on the album, like the one below.  The last full-length that Alexis G. put out was pretty right on, though there were some developmental moments in the LP.  The Pulsars and Quasars EP might be a little stop gap, but it definitely shows progression in what he’s been able to accomplish since last year.  The EP is available as of this week via Mexican Summer, so if you like what you hear below go grab that stuffs.

Austin Spotlight: Hear the 2nd Tune off the Balmorhea’s New 7″

balmoeNot long ago, we posted “Heir I,” one of the first new tracks we’ve heard from Austin’s Balmorhea in some time.  It was part of a special 7″ they’re releasing in conjunction with the vinyl reissue of their debut LP, which is all being handled by Western Vinyl.  This new piece is really exquisite; it captures the beauty the band has always created, but they seem to be experimenting with a little bit of discord; I like that touch.  Still, the building string arrangements that crash upon your ears are the 4.12 mark are just, well, incredible.  It’s clear that great care and thought have gone into the construction of this number, so hats off to that. The re-issue and the Heir 7″ both hit stores on October 14th.

Sorry I Missed This: New Holy Youth

youthA little bit ago I got this jam from Holy Youth, but I got sidetracked, forgetting how much I was hooked on the song.  The vocals threw me for a loop early on in my listens, but the guitar was just so damn catchy that I couldn’t get it out of my head.  I returned today with a bit of a fresh ear, realizing that the youthful approach to the recording of the vocals didn’t really strike me as all that odd, considering other things I’ve been jamming to this year.  So, with that in mind, I suggest you give this a good couple of listens, and you’ll be hooked too. Look for their self-titled debut via Happenin Records on October 14th.
