Wicked Hit from Sunflower Bean

sunSunflower Bean is a fairly new act if one was to go by the information passed our way, but I’m already interested to see what direction they’re heading.  This single has two souls, though they both seem to be haunted by different directions.  You’ll get the female fronted post-rock, with this entrancing yelp at the end of the syllables.  Then they switch it into more of a psychedelic realm, with a different twist on the music; these moments have more of a brooding fuzz to them, rather than the emphatic yelping of it’s counterpart. It’ll be interesting to see what comes next; there’s lots of room for them to grow.

Grungy Pop from Virgin Kids

virginIn case no one else out there obsessively follows their favorite labels, I’m here to help you with that job today.  Art is Hard Records tossed up this little gem from Virgin Kids last Friday, and it made its way into my weekend rotation, getting so many spins I had to share it with you. The three-piece London outfit really has two sides of this song; they offer a pretty straight-forward guitar pop piece up front, but get all distorted in the middle of the song, letting the chords ring loud.  Heavier parts of the song come in strong, but they’re short-lived, as to be sure not to wear out their welcome amid such a pop-centric feel.  Enjoy this one.

Austin Spotlight: New Song from Silver Ships

chazzWhen I look around the Austin music landscape, there’s some incredible things happening.  The rock n’ roll scene is hitting hard with great acts like Trustees or Xetas; the indie pop scene is, as always, flourishing; folk and country artists abound, with some doing it better than others.  But, no one is making the music like Silver Ships.  It’s the product of Chazz Bessette, who recorded the entirety of his new album sans computer technology.  That’s a pretty impressive feat alone, but this new song is just so so good. There’s an old school feel to it, with a plodding organ and a solid melody.  Look for more when Songs From a Room That Never Moves comes your way on September 30th.

Enjoy This Latest Single from Johnny Aries

johnnOkay. Johnny Aries plays with the Drums.  But, don’t let that impact your listening.  He’s actually better known, to me, of this role in UK outfit Two Wounded Birds.  The UK songwriter has a touch of that spritely bounce you’ll get in his current act, but there’s more of a traditional indiepop sound coming from his songs; I can even hear a bit of that Moz croon hanging on the tip of his delivery.  It’ll be interesting to hear how his whole record, Unbloomed, shapes up. It’s going to be released by Frenchkiss on August 26th.

Catchy Jam from Free Time

freeWe’d previously run the B-Side from Free Time, but the A-side is even better.  Dion Nania’s project seems to have fully taken form, stepping further away from his work with Twerps, and moving in another direction, though still paying homage to his past.  There’s cascading guitar solos maneuvering in and out of the song, and you’ll find the relaxed vocal approach working too.  If you expected another chilled bit of casual pop, then check yourself, as “Esoteric Tizz” is a stunner.  The 7″ will be released this week on Underwater Peoples, so grab it while its hot.

Austin Spotlight (Sort of): New Music from This Will Destroy You

twdyTechnically, This Will Destroy You hailed from San Marcos, which is just a few minutes away from Austin, so we’ll gladly take them in as our own.  They’re crafting the sort of sprawling post-rock that was popularized by the likes of Mogwai and EITS, and they’re doing a pretty solid job.  On their latest single, the song opens with a rolling drum and a careful touch of keyboard notes, as guitars quietly begin to creep into the track.  Just before the 1 minute mark, those guitars begin to ring louder, distortion enters the picture, building towards a crescendo.  But, if I were to have a complaint, it would be that song doesn’t quite get there; there’s no ultimate crash that swoops in.  Of course, that also makes the group different, offering their own branding on the style.  Look for their latest album, Another Language, on September 16th via Suicide Squeeze.

Lily Taylor Wins You Over with Her Voice

lilypadThere’s the sort of music where the instrumentation alone makes the track.  You’re playing air drums while driving in your car; the people next to you are pointing and laughing.  Then there’s the type where you’re sucked in with the emotional draw of the vocals; this is where you find artist Lily Taylor.  Her new song has barely any instrumentation aside from very light touches that allow space for her vocals to draw you in.  Those pipes are seductive, sucking you in second by second.  Her new record, The Ride, will be released by Pour Le Corps on September 2nd.

Jangling Pop from Fews

fuseStill not entirely sure how I feel about the band name here, but I know that I’m definitely feeling the vibe on this new track from Fews.  Immediately, the jangling guitars ring out just before the rhythm section joins in to propel the tune forward.  You’ll hear a bit of a soft dream vocal on here, but the recording and some of the inflections make it just a bit more playful than some of the group’s peers.  The band sound like a more upbeat version of the Drums, which isn’t a bad thing, so we look forward to hearing more from these guys now that they’ve returned to the music fold.

New Tune from Allah Las

allahOne of the things I love about listening to Allah-Las is that you get the real sense that you’re listening to music in California.  While their songs have hints of the modern psychedelia, they carry with them these sun-drenched guitar tones.  I guess that’s an easy comparison considering they’ve titled the new LP, Worship the Sun, but those hues of Cali make a great impression on listeners.  That being said, the new album has a lot of progression in it’s songwriting; the songs are tighter and there’s a greater variance from song to song.  You can grab the LP on September 16th from Innovative Leisure.

Saint Motel Back with New EP

saintsWe’ve long supported the boys in Saint Motel; I personally love their use of piano keys in their tracks…there’s just something uplifting about that aspect of their craftsmanship. This particular track opens with that piano bounce, then builds to a swelling vocal hook, pushed even further by gang-vocals during the chorus.  If you listen to this song and your life doesn’t get instantly better, then perhaps you need to press play again because eventually your mind will give in to the band’s greatness.  This is the third track on the group’s forthcoming My Type EP, which is set to be released next week.
