New Jam from Steve Adamyk Band

steveadamykEarlier this year I ran into a new 7″ from Steve Adamyk Band.  I was immediately excited, as a new single usually indicates a full-length is on its way.  That was just the case, as Dirtnap Records have announced that they’ll be releasing the new record from the group, Dial Tone.  This track is quick and to the point, which encapsulates my ideas about the group; they offer up a good dosage of punk rock in quick spurts, always bringing hooks that make their albums playable time and time again.  You can get your copy of the record on July 1st.

Eureka California – Crunch

eureka3Rating: ★★★½☆

Once in a blue moon you stumble across an album that defies the odds.  You might recognize bits of various genres within this sort of album, but every song sounds completely refreshing.  You’ll get precisely this when you listen to Crunch, the newest album from Athens’ Eureka California; they’ve created a pop rock record that doesn’t give a fuck if you like it.

One of the great attributes, of which there are many, on Crunch lives in the fact that only one song on the album breeches the 3 minute mark, with most falling far short of that mark.  Take the opener, “Edith” which is finished in just under a 1.5 minutes, as an example; it’s a jangling rocker with a nice little bounce, but rather than hit you over the head with redundancy, Eureka California quickly gets to the point, then wraps it up.  This is a tactic that’s used far too rarely nowadays, as many bands want to make sure you acknowledge their musicianship.  Here it’ll allow you to bob your head to track after track, never tiring of a single note.

Still, you can’t just rely on short bursts of joyous pop, you’ve got to have great songs tune, and they’re filling up this entire album.  I love “There’s No Looking Back,” opening with a casual chugging riff and vocals, but as you’re growing accustomed to the tune, it blasts off furiously into a more ramshackle version of itself.  There’s also “This Ain’t No A-Side,” which might be one of the album’s better tracks.  It uses a little bit of fuzziness on the instruments, while holding onto this youthful vibrance that burrows into your eardrums.  And you can’t forget the lead single from Crunch, “Twin Cities.” This song in particular gathers all of my favorite bits of the band and throws it into one song; there’s hooks in the vocals, well-executed guitar riffs, various movements and it all seems like the band is on the verge of falling off the tracks.

There’s a reckless abandon to the entirety of Crunch.  After many many listens it seems like the group got together to bang out the loudest, most fun set of pop tracks they could.  They clearly weren’t concerned with where they fit in the grand spectrum of the music world, they just wanted to write a bunch of great songs; it’s part of what makes every track so endearing, and ultimately what makes Eureka California something quite special.

Fresh Music from Tijuana Panthers

Tijuana_Panthers_Press_Photo_2-1024x682The word out of California is that Tijuana Panthers have perfected their sound; they’ve moved on from garage-rock roots to a more polished sound, thanks to Richard Swift who handled production duties on their latest record, Wayne Interest. There’s this great warmth to this single, moving along with a pretty chilled out guitar vibe.  Vocals come in, almost drifting, which is yet another reason I dig what’s being presented. You’ll be able to get the whole vibe from the band next week when their album hits the stores, courtesy of Innovative Leisure.

Minimalist Pop from Phoria

phoriaIf you went out last night and have to work all day Friday, you’re likely in need of some recovery music to get you through the day. Phoria, a  Brighton quintet, has crafted these really subdued pieces of pop music, featuring whispering vocals and minute electronic details throughout.  It’s a pretty stark musical landscape that they’ve created, but I’m finding myself absorbed with each repeated play.  You’ll be able to find this tune on the band’s Display EP, which is seeing an international release on June 16th via X Novo. Should be a nice little listening trip.

Bouncing Power Pop from The Number Ones

1s-coverDammit if I didn’t find one of my favorite tracks of the month just before we blast off into June.  You might ask why something so simple meets my requirements; it’s precisely that.  This new single operates between the realm of pop and punk rock, and it’s executed perfectly. There’s some catchy “you-ooh-oohs” thrown in, just in case you need to sing along at the top of your lungs.  It puts this Irish group at the top of my list for acts I’m most excited about in 2014; you can grab The Number Ones self-titled record on August 5th from Deranged Records.

Woods to Release New 7 Inch

woods2_630x300Seems like just a few weeks ago that Woods released With Light and With Love…wait, it was just a few weeks ago.  But, the band is already back with two new songs that they’ll be releasing through Captured Tracks.  I think this song fits perfectly in with the musical themes from that album, so we can look at these songs as additional brushstrokes to that stellar album.  While the track is dominated pretty simply by a good melody, there’s still that folky stomp that band so often employs coming in near the end of the track.  You can grabs it on July 8th from the label.

New Music from Geoffrey O’Connor

GeoffO024When I first met Geoffrey O’Connor he was fronting the Crayon Fields, who remain one of my favorite acts.  He was polite, yet possibly a bit timid.  However, as his solo career has blossomed, he’s become increasingly confident in his songwriting, leaving his audience with elegant pieces of pop music coated in synth work.  I dare say that this new single is easy listening, both in style and emotion; you can listen anywhere with a smile on your face.  It’s the second single from his new album, Fan Fiction, which will come your way via Chapter Music on August 8th.

Post Rock Soccer Ode from Dark Blue

dark blueFirst, I was surprised to see that Jade Tree was still releasing music; I used to love that label, but somehow completely forgot them.  But, for myself and the other lads at ATH, we profess our eternal love of soccer daily, and it’s all the reason to share this number from Dark Blue since it’s been labeled an ode to the sport and hooliganism (which I don’t support). Even if you don’t like soccer, surely you’ll appreciate this lead single from the band’s new 7″, which has this nice croon resting on top of noisy guitar riffs.  The vinyl version of this 7″ will come with a cover of John Cale‘s “Hungry for Love;” it will be released July 15th.

New Album from Bishop Allen

bishopallen_largeSome songs are impossible to ignore.  They immediately grab you, holding you tight, spinning you in whirlwind of pop.  That’s precisely the feeling I got when I listened to this brand new track from Bishop Allen.  If you look at the cover art for the band’s upcoming record, Light’s Out, you get the sense that the band was pursuing the same thing, putting some young kisd on the cover dancing up a storm.  It’s the sign of something delightfully catchy coming your way at the end of the summer, August 19th to be exact; it’s being released by Dead Oceans.  I dare you not to like this song.

Impressive New Tune from Vaniish

vaniishThe more tracks we get from Vaniish, the more excited I am for the unleashing of their new album.  The band’s made up of members, past and present, of Soft Moon and Wax Idols, and that pedigree alone would be enough to catch my interest, but the songs are solid too.  Their latest single, “Search and Replace” offers a wall of noise and a devilish beat behind it, then moves forward holding onto an edgy bit of post punk.  You know I love a song that hides its attraction to pop music behind some noisy bits. Their debut Memory Work will be out on June 10th via Metropolis Records.
