Fun Jam from Cape Lion

CapeLion_Photo1With all this SXSW business going on, I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed…you know, scheduling, advice, sleeping arrangements, etc.  So, with that in mind I figured I’d just throw out this jam from Cape Lion to lift all our spirits. It’s a pretty straight-forward pop jam of the electronic sort.  The Swedish duo craft the sort of jam you just want to throw on to get the evening dance party started for all your friends, so why not throw that party right now?  Expect an EP from the band later this Spring…for now just enjoy the swelling pop sounds coming through your speaker.

New Music from Ex-Cult

ex-cult_vice_670Couldn’t have Tuesday pass without throwing out something a little bit heavier, like this brand new jam from Ex-Cult.  These guys have been one of our favorite acts since they popped up, and I’ve really enjoyed the new music they’ve been working on.  Personally, I like the recording here, with really clear vocals up front, while the rest of the band pummels you with forceful drums and noisy guitar lines.  They’ve got a new record titled Midnight Passenger coming out on April 29th via the reliable Goner Records.  Take a little listen and get your energy up right this minute.

SXSW 2014 Interview: Anne

anneWe’ve been covering lots of Anne tracks lately, and the music that’s coming out of this artist is pretty kick ass.  It’s geared for all you folks ready to throw down on the dance floor, albeit with a slightly different vibe. He’s likely to keep his set pretty heavy with tracks from his recent album, Pulling Chain.  Here’s what he had to say before making his way into town, and personally, I think these are some of the best answers we’ve gotten.

Pleased to Meet You: Landlady

artworks-000070713585-wtoc0s-t500x500Collective groups are always interesting.  Sometimes you get to witness the powerful combination of songwriters, and other times, you get to watch things fall apart.  Landlady, the project of Adam Schatz of Man Man and his friends is picking up steam out of Brooklyn.  They’ve released a new single as they finish up work on their new album, which is slated for a summer release on Hometapes. This tune begins with a little piano tinkering before working in some jittery vocals that are reminiscent of Schatz’s main project.  The group heads on into Austin for SXSW, and while they’re name might not be out there just yet, it’s definitely one you should keep on your radar…even if you’re not going to be here for the festival.

Frail Track from Real//Talks

realtalksThere comes a time when some tracks just hit you, and today, as the cold weather returns, this tune from Queensland’s Real//Talks is perfectly fitting for my daily playlist.  The track doesn’t push forward too quickly, offering a fragile perspective that’s draped across a minimal piece of piano and guitar strumming.  Eventually, the song takes on a life of its own, blossoming into this swelling sound that captures the beauty of pop music. They’ll be releasing a self-titled EP this May, and let’s hope it’s as honest as the tune below.

New Tune from Pains of Being Pure at Heart

untitledPrintWhat a week for Pains of Being Pure at Heart.  First they leaked news of a new album with a short video, then comes this gem of a tune.  It’s definitely a departure, musically speaking, though the band still seems to have their finger on the pulse of pop music.  My ears hear bits of early Stars, which which definitely has me excited, as that’s one of my favorite acts.  It seems at this point that they’ve cleared out the distortion-related shoegaze element, leaving you with a delectable little ear treat. Their new album, Days of Abandon, comes out on April 22nd via Yebo Music.

New Music from Morning Harvey

morningharveyMorning Harvey is a five-piece act from Brisbane, Australia, and listening to this track, I think they fit right into the country’s latest musical exports.  You’ll hear a slight nod to the modern blend of psychedelia and shoe gaze, but I also hear evidence of an infatuation with Brit-pop.  There’s even  a soloing piece of guitar work that echoes throughout the end of the track, which is a major throwback, in my opinion, to 90s pop over in London.  Regardless, this new tune is pretty sweet, and hopefully we’ll have more news for you soon about a new release from the band.

The Mary Onettes Roll Out Another Hit

the-mary-onettes-Gunnar-BjörlingIt’s really been a joy watching the growth and progression of The Mary Onettes.  Their first entry into the indie mainstream was coated in a sort of wash of atmospherics, but they’ve since cleaned some things up.  But, on this new single you’ll see a nod to their past efforts, though the crystalline approach to the vocal delivery is also apparent here.  It’s the best of both worlds, indicating that the band has finally found the perfect formula.  You can grab their latest release, Portico, next Tuesday via Labrador Records.

Dig This Gay Single

gayNo. This single is not gay; it’s an inanimate object, silly.  Gay is the name of the band, who hail from Denmark.  It’s definitely a song with a different feeling than other worldly music goings-on.  For one, the guitar is just this distorted ringing sound, emphasized by the electronic programming that’s used to fill the background.  But, the vocal performance makes this song ridiculously catchy, and that’s precisely the reason I picked it out for you to jam with today. This track is the A-Side to the band’s new 7″, which will have a physical release on March 4th via Zoo Music.
