New Track from Head and the Heart

headAdmittedly, I’m not completely sold on The Head and the Heart, but they have two things going for them.  For one, they’re trusted by Sub Pop, which says a lot considering the label’s home to some of my favorites.  Second, this song is just really solid and hard to ignore.  My issue with the band was that I felt their first release was a little uneven, but both the tracks I’ve listened to from their forthcoming Let’s Be Still have been super impressive, leading me to believe that this could be the record that cements the group as a huge act across the globe.  If you’re into folk-influenced pop music then I think this one’s for you.

Dreamy Girl Pop from September Girls

septemberFor those of you looking for someone to temporarily, or permanently, replace your Vivian Girls/Dum Dum Girls fix, there’s no one out there doing a better job than September Girls.  This new tune opens up with this pounding drum, as a washed out vocal enters the fold.  Guitars are lightly dancing around in the background, swinging this dreamy bit of garage-pop our way.  The band’s released a handful of singles with some of our favorite labels, like Matinee, but they’ll be releasing their full length debut on Fortuna Pop in just a short bit of time. We’ll keep you posted, but enjoy this sweet jam.

ACL Spotlight: Widowspeak

junipThe big bands get all the love, so I want to further piggyback on B.Gray’s earlier post from last week and encourage you to go check out Widowspeak.  I’ve loved their sets since I first caught them at SXSW a few years ago.  While their sound has changed slightly since their first release, you can always count on the band to release tunes that deserve the adulation they’ve received. This year started out with the release of their underrated Almanac album on Captured Tracks, and they’re already backing that up with another set of tunes on the Swamps EP.  They will be taking the stage in the earlier part of the day, but that’s all the more reason to show up to ACL early in order to catch some of the lesser-known joys of the music festival.  For me, the Beach House set a few years back was what solidified my undying love for that act, and I have the sneaking suspicion that this year’s band may well be Widowspeak.

The band takes the stage each Friday at 12:45 PM on the Samsung Galaxy Stage.  Enjoy a new song from the group that just got released below.

Soulful Tune from The Liminanas

TIM060.Liminanas.CostaBlanca.LPjktUsually I’m not one to get into music sung in another language (it’s hard to relate ok?), but on this new track from French outfit the Liminanas, the group offer just a hint of English to grab my attention.  Oh, and I should probably mention that the track’s pretty special on it’s own.  While it has this really sinister moving moment that dictates the majority of the track, it also offers up a psych rock solo in the middle to mix things up.  I appreciate the group offering up more than just your traditional fare of the left-field genre, so in the end it’s easy for me to back what they’re doing.  The band will offer up Costa Blanca on November 19th via Trouble in Mind Records; it’ll be a reward for those who choose to step out of line.

Austin Spotlight: Genuine Leather

Gen_Leath_Band_2I sort of feel like there’s not been a lot of music coming out from Austin, so I was more than excited when I got this brand new tune from Genuine Leather.  The new single has this calming pop attitude, but there’s clearly more going on in the track than one would first hear.  It took me a couple of times to really take to heart the rolling drum beat and the incredible harmonies, though I was hooked on the song from the get-go. They’re finishing up their final touches on a forthcoming LP, but if you’re digging what you hear, they’ll be playing at the Mohawk this evening after the Unknown Mortal Orchestra show.  I’m so impressed with this tune, that I encourage you to all get on board as we support another great local act.

Dufflecoat Records Signs The Salient Braves

artworks-000058839981-8mgyb4-t500x500One of my favorite little UK labels, Dufflecoat Records, works really hard to give a voice to small acts all across the UK and beyond.  The label’s most recent signing is The Salient Braves, and I’m really digging what they’re working on. For one, the vocals have a small resemblance to David Gedge of the Wedding Present, so I’m always going to back that sort of thing. It’s a very British sound, with the vocals high in the mix, and the delivery seeming to work outside of the instrumentation.  Keep an eye out for the Somewhere Sordid EP in October!

Drifting Pop from Cross Record

crossrecordIt looks like Austin lost another great musician when Emily Cross, the young songstress behind Cross Record moved to Chicago.  It’s a shame, as her work, which is being re-released by Ba Da Bing Records is something truly special; I think it would have added an extra dynamic to our current music scene.  Be Good surfaced at the end of 2013, but with the backing of her new home, including this brilliant track, I figure her music is about to get a lot more coverage. The darkly emotional instrumentation fits her voice, making it hard to escape the incredible work that fills this album.

New Tune from The Stevens

stevensNot too long ago The Stevens released their debut EP via Chapter Music, and now that you’ve had time to absorb that gem, we’ve got a brand new song from the Aussies.  With fresh news that the label will be releasing their first full length, A History of Hygiene, it seems only fair that we accompany such great news with this scrappy pop number. I like the bouncing rhythm that is immediately established by the drumming, and the slight bit of echo on the vocals.  When gang vocals ring, the track really hits its stride, stepping in line with the ringing guitars.  The album will be available on November 1st, finishing off a great 2013 for the band…and you.

Swinging Pop Ditty from The Teen Age

The-Teen-AgeI’m in serious need of a pick me up today, as I spent my sleeping time rocking to the Terry Malts.  So I’ve turned to The Teen Age, who have just been prepping the release of a new 7″ via Paper Cup Music.  I like the way the guitars are being used here, not to mention the sort of classic doo-wop sound in the vocals; it’s definitely making me nostalgic for sitting around the house rocking with my mom’s tape collection.  Anyways, just dug this track, so I figured I’d share it with you all. Here’s to the weekend.

What Do You Think: The New Albert Hammond Jr Single

albertThis track has me a bit perplexed, so I figured I’d reach out to you faithful readers.  On one hand, I love both the Strokes and Albert Hammond Jr, but on the other hand, there’s something that seems amiss in this track.  There’s some great guitar work and catchy harmonies that I’ll definitely back any day of the week, but the stuttering piece at the opening few seconds of the verses sort of rubs me the wrong way.  Even the vocal there sounds odd, but that’s why I’m asking for your help.  Am I just a disgruntled aged blogger?  Regardless, I’m still looking forward to his AHJ EP, which will be released by Cult Records…which is run by some Julian Casablancas character…never heard of him.
