New Tune from Modern Hut

HutPromo1.1Joe Steinhardt is working under the moniker Modern Hut, and it’s time we introduce this fantastic new voice to you all.  His songs, like the one below, are pretty basic in construction, just using guitar and some minimal backing accompaniment. But, I’m particularly interested in the way his vocals are delivered, not to mention the lyrics that tie everything together.  Perhaps you can ascribe similarities to John Darnielle or a more serious Adam Green, which both count as great things in my book.  His album Generic Treasure will be coming out on August 17th courtesy of Don Giovanni Records.

New Music from Jonathan Rado of Foxygen

jonathanradoAdmittedly, I’m not a fan of Foxygen, at least in so far as the live setting goes. I thought the band was so horrible that I actually walked out of their set.  But, that being said, I can’t say enough about the songwriters in that band, especially Jonathan Rado.  He’s announced a solo effort for Woodsist, and it definitely harkens back to days of sincere pop.  If you didn’t hear the 60s influence on his writing before, you’re definitely going to hear it in this new track.  The album is titled Law and Order and should see a release date at some point in the fall.

Rad Rock from The Memories

347I’ve been jamming to the Memories for a good bit of time, but this new tune is really unexpected, in a good way.  Personally, I like the humor in this track, which isn’t entirely new, yet the overall attitude of the track is much more relaxed.  Of course, I can also relate to all those girls who don’t speak Spanish; it’s a big deal for RayRay and myself.  The group’s got a new record coming out on Burger Records; it’s titled Love is the Law and it will see a release date of July 23rd.  Just another great installment in this group’s growing career.

New Music from Scraper

scraperSeeing as there’s tons of punk rock all over town due to Chaos in Tejas, I think it’s only fitting that I put up some new rock n’ roll by Scraper.  The group has just signed on to release their debut 7″ on God?, which is the baby brother of Drag City.  It’s a fast paced jam, filled with discordant guitars, shouted lyrics and an old school bravado that I’ll always appreciate.   You want to unleash some pent up aggression? You’re not going to find a better track than this tune.

Power Pop Fun with Wyatt Blair

wyattblairOne of the great things about hitting up a show is discovering an act you knew little about, which happened to me recently when I stumbled into the power-pop delight that is Wyatt Blair while hanging at Hotel Vegas. The band’s set was lively and quick, giving the audience enough time to sink our teeth’s into the tunes, yet wanting more.  So I got more when I picked up the new album, Banana Cream Dream, and I’ve been rocking it ever since.  The record’s filled with tunes that combine ballsy garage rock with sugary pop, which just happens to be my favorite kind. Give it a listen!

Fresh New Jam from Jacuzzi Boys

Jacuzzi_Boys_Edited_2Man, I’m getting excited by a lot of the releases coming out this summer and fall.  One of my highlights has to be Miami’s Jacuzzi Boys; they’re one of my favorite live acts too.  They’ve been quiet, relatively speaking, since releasing Glazin, but they’re prepping a new 7″ single for July 9th (via Hardly Art), which means their anticipated 3rd LP is just around the corner.  This track has a steady flow to it, calmly delivering warm guitar parts to match the vocal delivery.  I’d say there’s a fair bit of restraint in this tune, showing some growth from their last LP.  Definitely perked my ears up!

More from Hooded Fang

1874Man, Hooded Fang is really hitting the ground hard with all these singles.  I think that “Bye Bye Land,” the latest, is definitely one of my favorites of the three we’ve heard so far.  It opens with this light guitar just before the drums get pounded and the vocals swirl in with a nice little echo effect.  Again, the band is displaying the varying skills in their repertoire, making the likelihood that Gravez will go stale over time very small.  The record will be in stores for all to enjoy today, so be sure to get your hands on a copy.

New Jam from Surf City

surfcityFive years ago when we were just young bucks starting out on our site, we threw a small SXSW party at the now defunct ghost room.  One of the acts we were really excited to bring in was Surf City, and I’ve closely followed the group since those early days.  Through three albums, they’ve polished up their sound a little bit, bringing the excessive noise down a bit, choosing to replace it with more direct melodies.  They’ll have a new album coming out titled We Knew It Was Not Going to Be Like This, which comes out August 19th via Fire Records.  Should definitely be a good record to wrap up the summer.

Pleased to Meet You: Fine Steps

finestepsOne of the greatest things I remember about being a kid was following labels like Lookout or Dischord or Matador, knowing that I’d love whatever they put out.  It’s a good thing I still stick to that sort of attitude, which is why I chose to check in today with Volar Records, who’ve put out things by Tropical Popsicle and Window Twins, to name but a few. One outfit they’re working with, though I don’t know much else, is San Fran group, Fine Steps. The group released a pretty solid LP in 2012 titled Boy’s Co, but it seems they’ve got something new in the works. This song has some heavy vocals over this old school punk rock work.  If this jam isn’t making your day, then I don’t know what else to tell you, but I’m glad I stumbled upon it today.

More New Music from Coma Cinema

1881At the moment, I’m pretty obsessed with listening to Posthumous Release, the newest LP from Coma Cinema.  There’s something about the craftsmanship in the songwriting, dwelling in the same sphere as early Elf Power, where darkness and fairy tales blend with incredible pop sensibility.  On this newest single, there’s a bit of a wash over the vocals, coating them in a shroud of mystery, yet the ability to infect you with emotion still resonates in my ears. This album is one of my personal highlights of the year thus far, and you can grab your copy on June 11th.
